DO you think a viable chaos list could be made without warriors in its core? I have been playing around with the idea of a purely barbarian list comprised of gaints, ogres marauders and a chaos lord. Its not that I dislike warriors its just they are mildly dull. So could the angry men of the north be used to form a afective chaos list or do you really need warriors to pull off games in 8th.

BQ: If marked gaints are worth it what mark is the best for em?

Marauders are an extremely cost effective unit, and if you've got the $$$ and patience to build 120-150 marauders you should end up with an extremely powerful core for your army. Warriors have a lot of strengths, but besides carry magic banners the thing they do that dozens of (great weapon) marauders don't do so well is defend and assault buildings. If you need units to be mangled or broken, 30-50 5 point lumberjacks should get the job done.

On giants, I think unmarked or tizz is the way to go, because the other options dramatically increase the price while having zero to marginal (nurgle gives no anti-artillery protection) effect upon survivability, where the giant really suffers. Slaanesh is cool because of ASF but IMO it's drunkenly expensive for something that dies to shooting 7 of 10 games.

They can totally work, but you're going to need to take advantage of that Horde rule, and you'll probably want 50+ man units, though that's by no means a must. You'll want to try to get as many flanks as possible though, to help those Marauders when big tough units like other Chaos Warriors, Temple Guard, etc. show up and require more than just a couple of rounds of combat.


I also agree with Salvage on Tzeentch marked Giant, though I've seen silly things happen with Nurgle too.

Here too is where magic is going to come in, like shadow or heavens to even the odds by hexing the other guy / augmenting your squishy T3 boys. Not sure how high of points you're shooting for but it's not impossible to fit both a level 3-4 caster and a budget chaos lord in 2000-2500 points.

Anyhow, yes, marauders can work. Because they are so cheap, they will often perform better than chaos warriors; as long as you take enough marauders.

How do marauders defend their flanks? By not having flanks.
292 points gets you 50 marauders, with musician, standard, mark of khorne and great weapons.

4 of these units makes an awesome center, covering most of the table.

What's your plan for magic defense?
Personally, I like the idea of all marauders and either a Daemon Prince (their god) or a Galrauch (their master).

A few units of Fast cav with flails will really limit the amount of shooting that warmachines will get to do at your monsters.

And as always, war alters are a great buy for a marauder army. Having 50 guys get better is a pretty good deal; and the modeling aspect of it can really give the army a great theme.

I kind of want to see an all marauder army happen. I like extreme builds and I think this one could well work just be weight of numbers. Lots of MoK lumberjacks and sword and board with either MoT or MoS should work well. My only worry would be that their morale is a little low, and one unit breaking would cause issues for the rest, but they do get a reroll on panic, and MoK and MoS give immunity to Panic anyway, so you shouldn't have issues making it into combat.

I don't know about cheaper, but any of the chaos characters you could dress up in the various magical heavy or light armors and call them crappier than their chaos armor counterparts. I could see an exalted-as-barbarian-lord leading the force, with level 4 as second in command and some studdly exalted BSB around. But still awesome stats and bloaty with points.

The least armored character is festus, and he is awesome. He give any unit he join regen(5) and poison plus he automatically knows curse of the leper. A very fun combo is a shadow mage with enfeebling foe, drop their strength to one the cast curse, BAM, dead unit. I've killed massive units (characters included) with it

Not a dead thread as i am still looking for others who run this kind of list
