Chaos won the campaign. There was a bit in WD about how the Imperials had failed to work together, and how Chaos had scored a massive victory on the ground and a minor defeat in space.
In fluff, they obviously couldn't remove Cadia as an Imperial world because the IG model line is mostly Cadians. So Chaos took control of the majority of the planet Cadia with pockets of Imperial resistance that would continue to fight for hundreds of years. There is only war, yadda yadda. Technically the 13th Black Crusade still continues as of m41.999.
Some Imperial players seem to be of the laughably mistaken opinion that the purpose of a Black Crusade is to conquer the entire Imperium. If Terra isn't a smoking crater, Abaddon has failed again. In reality each Black Crusade has it's own objective. For example, the Gothic War (12th Black Crusade) objective for Chaos was to capture the Blackstone Fortresses, which they partially succeeded in. The 13th Black Crusade's objective was to capture Cadia, which was mostly a success. Chaos and Abaddon won.

This is a solid summary. The WD he's referring to is somewhere between WD 280-295 if I'm not mistaken.

If Abbadon had wanted to solely make for Terra he would have done it already. He's been gathering the pieces to his puzzle of annihilation and the picture of the Imperium in his grasp is nearly complete.
A bit more information for the OP
At the close of the Thirteenth Black Crusade, Cadia still stands. But she stands alone, a failing beacon flickering against the encroaching night. Total war is come to Segmentum Obscurus, and all hopes of repelling the invaders are dashed. The Imperium must now consolidate its grip upon those worlds it still holds, and prepare to fight a war that will not end within the lifetime of any of its combatants. While Cadia still stands, humanity has reason to hope, but Abaddon the Despoiler has finally achieved what he has failed to do on twelve previous occasions, over ten thousand years- he has breached the Cadian Gate, and none can now hold back the inexorable tide of Chaos unleashed upon the Imperium of Man.
The bleak moors of Cadia are reduced to a barren, crater-pocked wasteland, blasted by orbital torpedoes, super-heavy artillery and the footfall of titans. The Vilklas and Andur defence lines have collapsed under the relentless pressure of a million frenzied cultists, traitors and mutants, and the Cadian High Command has been forced to relocate to Kasr Gallan on the far side of the Caducades Sea. Though the Imperial Navy is in control of the inter-system space lanes, Chaos rules the skies above Cadia since the orbital defences fell in the opening days of the Black Crusade. The defenders of Cadia are now deployed around Kasr Gallan and throughout the Wastes, resolute that not a backward step shall be taken. The order is given- ‘stand at Cadia, or damn the Imperium of Mankind to the depredations of Chaos for all eternity’.
Go Chaos!

I think the point was though Chaos has most of Cadia the IoM control the space around it so the IoM can get reinforcements. Chaos cannot.

Plus the fact that they've severely weakened Cadias defences. Meaning more resources will have to be funnelled towards the relief effort. Resources that would likely have been used elsewhere. As a war of attrition the 13th black crusade went well for chaos.

It did seem to go pretty well. For Chaos of course.

Yep, but I've always got the impression that it was less bleak than that? Abaddon had taken most of Cadia, but the Imperium had held in space, so the Imperials would be landing reinforcements to drive the invaders back.
I mean, yeah it'll take forever to rebuild the defenses around Cadia, but somehow I imagine that's going to be priority #1 for the Imperium right now.

Yeah, Cadia is far from lost. As Rube said, Cadians are the most popular IG soldiers, so they'll never let the planet fall entirely to Chaos. At worst it'll remain in constant war like Armageddon. Personally, I think it was poor planning on GW's part to use Cadia as the battleground for the campaign. It guaranteed that Chaos couldn't gain an outright victory before the campaign even began.

Out of curiosity, how often do these Mega-campaigns happen? When is the next one predicted to happen? Is there going to be another one?

Cadia is not the biggest concern in the the imperium right now, as there are many other pressing matters such as but not limited to:
-Hive Fleet Leviathon wreaking havoc and nearing Terra
-Tau constantly expanding
-Dark Eldar attacks increasing
-More Necrons awakening
-Eldar continuing attacks and raids
-Orks on Armageddon (and all over the galaxy for that matter)
The inperium can only dodges so many blows at a time...

Medusa V was in 2006 IIRC, thats almost five years ago! We do need to have another mega campaign AFAIK, its the ONLY way to get GW to move the plot forward, even a little bit. TBH I never knew chaos "won" the 13th black crusade, I thought it was a miserable failure like all the others. but as someone previously mentioned GW would never led cadia be totally defeated. Thats why medusa V was more fair, it was not a cornerstone of 40K fluff.

I only remember that IoM was given the wn for Medusa V as they stuck to their original sotry more than the others... though i'm not sure how the gauged that.

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.
