Show up here picked Limbo as not only the Xbox goty but the actual Game of The Year! Pretty shicking for a little indy game. Haven't played it myself beyond the demo. Personally, I'd pick Mass Effect 2.
How about you? What is The Game of the Year in your opinion?

Oh, trust me, it is.
Red Dead Redemption is the first game to ever really achieve cinematic quality in a videogame. The writing, voice acting, and even the camera angles are all incredibly well-done. The storyline will definitely tug at your heartstrings, and it offers wonderful juxtaposition (or rather, shows the similarities) between our modern values and morals and those present in american culture in 1911.
It almost seems as if the world presented in RDR has a pulse. It's so alive that you almost have to think twice to realize all the effort that must've gone into a world that's so seamless and realistic. The world offers you just about everything you could think to do within the time period, and none of the activities ever feel half-baked. There has never been a game that's done so much so well.
The soundtrack is truly dynamic, and aside from a few interspersed vocal tracks that I'm not personally a big fan of, it does a wonderful job of pulling you into the world by ebbing and flowing right alongside the action onscreen.
The gameplay also offers you a great balance of challenge. You will most certainly die a few times, but your death never feels like you've been cheated. The skill-based completion challenges are definitely preferred to searching for useless filler items (like so many other open-world games tend to force on you), but none of them are so difficult that you get stuck on them indefinitely. The euphoria engine might give you a few problems at first, but like any great game, the way the game controls will eventually sink in and become like second nature to you.
The multiplayer is also thoroughly incredible, and will offer you just as much entertainment as the single player game. It's basically a light MMO with the entire game world at your disposal, with a lot of old west flavor thrown into your basic multiplayer modes to give them some much-needed variety. Honestly, it's the most fun I've had in an online game without having to pay a subscription fee. Rockstar still lends the single player game support via interesting challenges provided by their 'Social Club', but you'll be spending most of your time in multiplayer once you hit 100% (Which should take you at least 40 hours).
Just do yourself a favor and avoid the Undead Nightmare DLC if you can help it. The storyline is completely sub-par when standing up against the main campaign, the world that was once so full of life becomes completely stagnant, the activities presented to you are very repetitive, and the game engine was not built for killing zombies whatsoever (all of the problems with the euphoria engine become really apparent here). There are one of two redeeming qualities, but mostly, Undead Nightmare takes everything there is to love about Red Dead Redemption and completely strips it from the game without giving much back to the player in return. This is probably my least favorite DLC I've ever bought for exactly that reason. It tarnished what is possibly my favorite game of all time.
Honestly, I would drop the bug-ridden Fallout: New Vegas for now, and come back to it once you've experienced this incredible game. Trust me, it's worth it.

Don't worry, I'm convinced. However I'm shocked about the Undead Nightmare comments. First negative thing I've heard about that mostly highly acclaimed DLC ever. Although I'm sure most of that is bonus points for Zombie cowboys!
I'm almost at the finish-line for FO:NV so I'll stick it out but ya, it's far from Game of the Year fare.

Yeah, the setting is the only really cool thing about Undead Nightmare, as a western zombie game has never been done before (That, and the fact that you get to wrangle the Four Horses of the Apocalypse). However, if you come into Undead Nightmare expecting the same incredible quality and variety you got from the main game, you will be extremely disappointed. It literally takes everything good about the game and turns it against itself.
It is quite a good value (ten dollars for a good twenty hours of content is more than decent), but I would still stay away from it unless you really feel the need for some western zombie action.
Thankfully, it's entirely possible to take the title of the game literally, so it doesn't blemish the main game at all.

JOKE RUINED.
Anyway, I disagree with ME2. Mostly for the fact that I think it's pretty unfair to even class a sequel as GOTY. I mean, RDR is a 'spiritual successor' to Red Dead Revolver, but is a completely different game. ME2 was just ME with a few bugs ironed out and a cliché storyline.

Don't get me wrong, I loved this game. But the storyline was just another generic videogame ramble which just aided peicing missions together. Any storyline it did hang on to was ruined by some stupid anticlimactic ending which consisted of you killing the guy you were chasing the entire game (well at least since mexico when the guy who was built up to be the main bad guy was killed and all of a sudden he's not the main bad guy blablabla) then participating in some ramble on a farm which took the pace of the narative from 100mph to 10mph in an instant before upping the pace again instantly for the final mission. It was the equivalent of a narrative heart attack. Then of course the ending which was just plain ripped off from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid. Funilly enough most of the good parts in the story were references (or more accurately: ripped off, when you consider rockstars tracked record) from old western films. Rockstar can write dialogue and characters decent enough, but they can't write story lines for gak. The mulitplayer was great, what there was of it that is. Could have done with a few more game modes really. Apart from that the game play was brilliant and probably still stands as a contender for game of the year for me. But that has nothing to do with it's storyline which was poorly done.
ToBeWilly wrote:Chrysaor686: Sorry, the first Mass Effect beat Red Dead Redemption, by about 2 years, with having cinematic quality in a videogame. IMO
No, cinematic quality in video games doesn't exist yet. There have only been a few storyline in games which would come close to passing for a decent film screenplay and mass effect/rdr aren't one of them.
edit: Actually I take that back. Uncharted 2 is probably cinematic quality.
My vote would probably be for black ops. Mainly for the singleplayer which had a brilliant pace to it with perhaps the best fps missions I've ever played, the prison escape one in particular. And the refreshing idea of including splitscreen multiplayer on online play. First 360 release which can actually call itself a social activity imo. I had started wondering why it was possible to connect two pads to it.

I would say Mass Effect 1&2 have cinematic quality. Haven't played RDR yet but even GTA4 was quite good but got convoluted in the end.
In fact I feel "cinematic quality" almost does a deservice to some games. Many Video games have a lot better storylines than a lot of movies out there.

My game of the year is a tough one, but honestly it goes to Mass Effect 2 for just best gaming experience.
RDR is awesome and the story is brilliant, probably Rockstar's finest gaming achievement to date, but Mass Effect 2 beat it IMO. I was hyped for Mass Effect 2 for a long time, I completed the first game numerous times and had a blast each time, and the second game just blew it all away and did it so much better. I haven't even played the Lair of The Shadow Broker DLC yet but I cannot wait to get stuck into that morsel.
Mass Effect 2 is my Game Of The Year closely followed by RDR.

I would vote for Mass Effect 2. That game is just stunning, I think more games should strive for what ME2 accomplished. That being said I have yet to play Red Dead :( I need to get my hands on that, but if i'm not mistaken it's only on consoles. Edit: How could I forget Deadly Premonition! And yes I'm serious I love that game; maybe it's because I also love Twin Peaks. Puzzle Quest 2 also gets an honourable mention

My favourites for this year are Halo: Reach, Mass Effect 2 and Metro 2033.

I dont know why becuase i want to love the games, i really do, but i just find mass effect so boring. And the method for stripping resources was sooooooo tiresome. But being a weirdo i stripped the majority of the galaxy down to hardly anything only to find i didn't have anything left to buy.
But despite this there is so much good about the games but i just cant help getting bored of them.
I liked Vegas but it was buggy as hell and stopped me from playing it until i buy the new expansion.
Reach and back ops have been good but both are too simialr to the previous games in their titles (black ops alot more than reach). The call of duty franchise actually has to do something to make their games different other than adding small features and a bit more content (this doesn't stop me from loving the games however).
I havent had a chance to play red dead yet although i own it so i probably should.
And on the note of story-lines i have to mention that the only story to get me to cry in a video game in the last 8 years is Saints Row 2. And this is a game that was never meant to be serious. That game is ranked in my best 3 ever games.

NEVER!
From a design perspective they are the perfect enemy.
They are obviously evil and are fun to kill and you can make them different levels of difficulty and not have to explain it very much and they are unfeeling undead husks. So no one feels bad about killing them.
Imagine how much gak a game would get if they made you kill a village of aggressive enemy people (women children and all). Then think of how much less they would get if those people became zombie women and children zombies.

Halo: Reach for me, the story was brilliant, I loved every part of it. The game was immense fun to play yet again, and the upping of the graphics engine was the icing on the cake.
Can't get enough of the game.
I must admit at this point I haven't managed to play Red Dead Redemption yet, but from reviews I have seen here and elsewhere I'll be picking it up at some point this year for certain.

I loved the single player version of Red Dead Redemption, but I don't like online play at all. Every time I tried it, it was just lonely and boring. If you can get into a posse with people and everyone plays together, it can be fun, but that was always few and far between.
The towns that were teaming with life in the single player game are pretty much empty now just with like 1 or 2 npcs who are really only there for you to murder so you can have shootouts with the cops. Other than that, you just go to the different gang hideouts and kill all the gang members and get a little bit of xp for your time, so it just turns into a hideout farming snoozefest, over and over.

Don't naysay the Undead Nightmare scenario without trying it, Rockstar could have just thrown together zombie arena mode and what not but instead crafted a mini campaign to go hand in hand with the zombies and honestly it is brilliant, it is funny, self referential and off the wall insane. The side missions are good, the main plot is fun and it puts a new spin on Red Dead, the currency in the game is gone and now you must conserve your ammo.
Tip: Aim for the head. :-p

Just beat Red Dead Redemption as recommended but I'll stick with ME2.
I recently played some of the GTAIV expansions and although I loved GTA IV when it came out I was surprised how dated it was seeing it again recently. The controls are very clumsy and I find Red Dead carries this problem on. Story was pretty good but
I'd give it 4/5 stars but not Game of the Year for me.
