Subject: Field Abbadon in a land raider or deep strike him?
|
 |
Khorne Rhino Driver with Destroyer

Hi
i have been currently been playing 750 to 1000 point armys so have not had a chance to feild abbadon with a retinue.
i play against orks and Imperial guard.
i will be playing a 2000 point battle somewhen over christmas so can fianally point wise afford to be feilding good old abby!
my dilemma is... we reguarly play a 3 way iniahlation battle. My imperial friend has alot of tanks and big guns and usually sits back and waits for the enemy to come to him and strikes me from afar and the orks obviously like to swarm in a mob and get straight in for an assault.
i feel a deepstrike would help me dealing with the imperial plus save on points as i would no longer need a land raider.
where as it would benifit me to get abby and his retinue in a landraider and get in to assult the orks.
shall i scrap the idea of feilding abby and spend the points else where wisly or sucome to my passion towards the chaos great leader and get him in for some killing?
only started properly playing in october so my tactical decisions are not perfect ..... yet!
all opinions welcome!
regards seb

The chances of deep-striking and mishaping with such an important HQ choice - or not getting him until turn 4-5, especially against IG who can Master of the Fleet you into -1 to your reserve rolls....
I'd stick with the Land Raider route. And stick a bunch of possessed marines in there with him. =D

Ok so.... Can abby have retinues other than terminators? In the new codex it dont really state much about retinues. Unless id find it in the BRB.
Well the benifit of the master of fleet could be that i could have enough time to run up a squad of csm in a rhino up near to the imperial popping smoke and then deep strike him next to an icon?
Do you think that could work?

Admittedly,i have not looked lately, but i do not think chaos has retinues. He can join a unit,be it Termies or some possessed like Dash suggests. Then they can go in a Raider and set off to mess stuff up,which for me is the better option. He has a personal icon,so you could DS something like daemons or more termies near him in support.

Just remember, Chaos Terminators aren't fearless, so don't let them get sweeping advanced while Abbadon is attached or you'll hate yourself for a LOOONG time.

Land raider, a million times land raider.
Firstly...

Deepstriking is slow. You don't want abbadon off the board for half the game.
Secondly, Deepstriking is dangerous. You will probably only need to see this one example, to be convinced of this.
Furthermore, last I checked, abbadon was a close combat monster, and you can't assault the turn you deepstrike in.
This means you're going to find yourself in positions where you wait until turn 4 for him to show up, and he can't even assault, which means he gets one turn of action before you roll a 2 on your roll to continue at the bottom of 5. And that's assuming he didn't mishap or scatter way far away.
The LR is much faster, and much more consistent. If you want cheaper, then run him on foot, but don't deepstrike him in.

Another voice in the chorus for land raider.
The biggest issue is that DSing, the soonest you can POSSIBLY assault is turn 3; and that's if you get a 4+ on Turn 2 and your opponent obliges you by leaving a unit close enough for him to assault. Being a model on foot, frequently enemy units can just run away from him. Not good.
In a LR, unless it gets blown up (which you want to be very careful of), he can assault as early as T1 against an aggressive enemy, and T2 or T3 at the very latest.
Accompany him in the LR with an assault unit; terminators or berserkers are common and good options.
Bear in mind that they can separate when you disembark them, as long as you place Abby so he's not within 2" of any of the models in the unit when you do so. This allows them to charge and kill two different units, which can be a good way of making good on the ~650-700pt total investment in the LR, squad, and Abby.
-------------------
As for danger, DSing is only dangerous if you're desperate or foolish enough not to do it off an Icon. Which is almost always a dumb idea.

Take Abbadon and put him in a squad of 4 Terminators. Give 2 of the Terminators Chain Fists, so that way them and Abbadon can chew apart your Imperial Guard friends tanks. Then give the remaining 2 a pair of Lightning Claws that way you have nasty close combat along with Abbadon against your friends Orkz. Put all 5 of them in a Land Raider move it towards the intended target turn 1 and then pop smoke, on turn 2 move up then drop em out and watch the killing begin!

I suggest running Abaddon in a LR with fearless assault unit such as Possessed or Berserkers. Abaddon's 4+d6 str 8 attacks at I6 is more than enough to carry the unit in any assault.

I'd go with this advice. I liked to run Abbadon in a LR with Khorne zerkers rather than possessed. The only terminators I really liked putting in a LR were 2xLC Slaanesh termies with a 2xLC Khorne Termie lord. Abaddon is better with units of more models imo but ymmv.

Had A battle last night. After all your suggestions i decidedto deep strike him mainly cos the point range dropped to 1500.
Despite the orks being being wiped off the board and the game having to end in a stalemate.( Due to time factor and all was left was abbadon and a leman russ.) i cant help but feel the game was a disaster. Abbadon came on in turn 5 .
Couldnt strike him next to an icon, as my plage marines i was running up the board in a rhino, got picked off by lascannon fire, which imobalised the tank and then my p marines got battered by deathkopters. my plage marine champion also rolled a 1 to hit with his p pistol and wound him self and died !!!
I should of just fielded abby from the start! He did whack the orks was boss and his retinue but lost all abbys retinue too . Seemed too easy for them to kill abbys retinue. The warboss has the power claw is it right that my retinue in term armour dont take armour saves just invunrable save?

Yes, a powerklaw is just like a powerfist. Doubles strength, ignores armor.
