A player at my FLGS claims I cannot take vetrans as my 2 required troops and that I must take 2 platoons and a company command squad before I can take Vets even though vets are troops as well.

Is he right or am I right

Vets are their own troop. You dont need a platoon for them. So in this case you are completely correct.

Oh I come from a land, from a faraway space
Where the caravan shuttles roam
Where the war is immense
And the fights are intense
It's barbaric, but hey, it's home

Imperium nights
Like Imperium days
More often than not
Are hotter than hot
In a lot of good ways

He is wrong. You can take Veterans, Platoons, or Penal Legion Squads as troops.

Vet-Mech lists use nothing as troops except veterans.

You will need a HQ unit though. Either a CCS, Lord Commissar, or Primaris Psyker will work.

Post your list. Maybe there was something else in it that stuck in his craw.

He's probably thinking of previous editions when Veterans were an elite choice.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

Point out to him the Infantry Platoon Composition on P96.

Then the *Note at the bottom of P97.

Then the lack of an asterisk for Veteran Squads on P98.

Just ask him to cite a page number.

Or let him know that vets are troops now--they used to be a 0-1 elites unit and the fact that they're veterans confuses the crap out of some new players.

Vets are now veterans? Apparently it does confuse some players.

Well, the unit is called a "Veteran Squad" and it is made up of "Veterans"...

So yeah, I would say that Vets are veterans.

Generally, in most armies, units of Veteran troops are Elites choices. We IG players get the cream of the crop(hey, they obviously survived at least 1 battle wearing tin-foil armor and shooting flashlights at the enemy) as a Basic troops choice.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

I don't know about other armies, but it always seems that guard players have the worst time with people misunderstanding how the guard works.

The first game I played in 5th edition, one of the players informed me that I needed to guess a range with my basilisk. That was TWO RULES EDITIONS out of date...

That said, it does seem that there are a lot of 40k players out there who still hold onto out of date ideas, so maybe it's not just the guard...

I agree...

People get confused about:

1. Vets as troops

2. No more armored fist squads

3. Any former guess weapon including Basalisks

4. Ordnance fire from LRBT and variants under the Lumbering Behemoth special rule

5. Two dice pick the highest for penetration rolls for Ordnance weapons. I frequently have to point my opponents to p. 58 and 60 of the rulebook, especially when I'm trying to penetrate vehicle side or rear armor with my Ordnance barrages.

6. Commissars as upgrades rather than ICs.

Did I miss any?

Vets no longer being elites confuses veteran players?!?
