Quick question i hope:

What difference is there between different casting resins?
I recently got myself some casting silicone and resin.
the silicone is fine for what i need but the resin doesnt seem quite right. Its a horrid yellowy part see thru icky mess when finished, not the lovely white stuff that i see people casting with on here. What is this stuff, any trade names or words to look out, a source in the UK would be great.
Cheers for any help in advance.

I use alumilite, and it's been great for me.

It may be an issue of proper proportions-- mixing it right is VITAL to a proper set.

What TYPE of resin is it?

Acrylic
Epoxy
Polyurethane
Other?
Different resins have different properties and shrinkage rates. Some are better at some things than others.

Most commonly used is a polyurethane resin. This is generally opaque.

Alumilite is often given a good rep. I've never used it.
I use Ultrasil for resin casting and rtv101 for metals and the resin I get from my mates who work in the FX industry.

You get that stuff from hobbycraft or a craft shop? It should be okay to use.

If you dont want to get this locked, I would recomend writing that you are going to be casting things of your own creation **wink wink** that you have made, not anything by GW f any other company **wink wink** of course, unless you brag about it or sell the reproduced stuff, it doesnt really matter.

Talking about casting or casting materials does not need a disclaimer...

Edit: And it really sounds like you have not mixed the resin correctly and it has only partly set.

I have the same problem when I make large batches and don't mix properly. Also you can add more of the hardening part of the mixture. This is a lot easier to control with 1-to-1 mixes.
I buy directly from the factory so I don't have any problems getting additional batches of the hardening agent.

As for the colour...who cares whether is comes out yellow, beige or white. It will get painted anyway.

I use this for my casting:

http://www.micromark.com/CR-300-QUICK-CURE-CASTING-RESIN-32-FL-OZ,7776.html

it says it is urethane..... no clue about that but it is really good and you just mix equal parts of each.

Cheers for the replies guys.
Container says it is polystyrene casting resin.
but it isnt a 1 to 1 mix ratio, which would probably help me.
will try and get some 1 to 1 mixing resin.
