One of my buds used to play DH and has a box full of Grey Knights waiting for the new Codex. While flipping through his 'Dex, I noticed the Allies section and was intrigued. After reading up on them, I discovered some very interesting combos such as:

PBSs' "Weaken Resolve" + Callidus Assassin

PBS + Culexus Assassin

General excellence of IQ Stormies

And everyone's favorite: Inq Lord with Mystics!

Basically I was just wondering what people's experience with Allies have been, as they seem very powerful but a bit restrictive in an all-comers list.

Inq lord w/ mystics is my favorite but I've heard good things about PBS w/ Callidus.

Either way with the upcoming GK codex I'd make sure to state using WH not DH as allies. Also if WH get's redone don't expect allies to stay. I removed my allies from my wolves list just for that reason.

Yeah I'm not sure if Witch Hunters will ever be updated... so allies should be sticking around for the forseeable future, unless GW makes a decision on them.

Battle Sisters allow an alternative to Meltavets, plus the ability to bring a Book of St. Lucius or Immolators has it's appeal. Scouting a Celestian unit with 2 Meltaguns and a burny Immolator is a move worthy of Creed.

Mostly, because it is funny to have a 26 point unit ride in a 250+ point transport.

It's a shame that Immolator's are Heavy Support... or is there a way to take them as Dedicated Transports that I'm not seeing? Either way, Allied dominions in an Immolator look pretty nasty.

@MagicJuggler: How would the Celestians get a Scout move? Or are you saying it would be worth taking Creed just for that...? Sorry.

Apart from a couple neat little tricks, there isn't anything that allies do that the guard codex itself cant' do for better or cheaper.

The only real exception to this is grey knight terminators, as WS5 I4 S6 power weapons are particularly brutal to certain units, and the only real alternative is rough riders, which don't exactly venn over quite all the way.

True, but those little tricks can be quite devastating against certain opponents.

All in all, while cute, I don'y think many Allied units are feasible for all-comer lists, is what I'm getting from this. Definitely some food for thought though, thanks for the perspective guys!

Oklahoma City, Ok.

Psychic offensive/defensive power is the biggest "ally" IG could use in my opinion.
and to be honest, i'd be happy with just a Psychic Hood.

Yeah, Inquisitor Lord seems to be the most used Ally. Also does the WH Inquisitor really not have access to Mystics? I dont see them on the Henchmen page.

Grey Knights are amusing, and since there does not appear to be a prohibition against them riding in a Chimera.. But I still think that the DH Inquisitor with mystics as a defense against deep strikers for a gun line army is probably better... :-) But I do fully expect the "allies" to be gone soon..

Mesopotamia. The Kingdom Where we Secretly Reign.

Grey Knights in Vendettas seems popular.

I think its worth it to take an Inquisitor Lord just for the Emperor's Tarot and Psychic Hood, personally.

Celestians and Dominions can take dedicated Immolators. It's not worth taking Creed *just* for the Scout move but if you are already doing a hybrid Guard list it doesn't hurt.

Psychic Hood. Only way IG can get one is allies, and that's not a 'neat little' trick', that's a major flaw in the IG codex. We've got a psyker HQ, but he doesn't have access to a hood?!

or just a brother-captain (thats the cheap GK hero right?) I played against an IG army with that guy as an HQ unit and it hurt my BA a ton just by being able to use its psychic hood to knock out most of my blood lances and shield powers!

oh just saw it got mentioned earlier. IG reallly should be able to get a psychic hood themselves!

IG doesn't NEED a psychic hood. It's already the best race in the game, and most people don't take a second HQ - the Primaris Psyker would become a staple for Guard armies and they would just run one around with their army (whatever it was).

IG suffers from weak Psychic attack and defense. It's one of the few weaknesses they have. If they would gain access to the hood, it needs to be priced heavily, since it's not something their army needs to be having (similar to how Ogryns are expensive)

EDIT: On-topic, I like a Grey knight squad if you can somehow manage to find a billion points to stick them in.

It is not the best race in the game, it is a very good one, but not the best, there is no best in my view. IG can be beat easily by certain lists. theyjust tend to have somevery good lists and options. They don't need a psychic hood, but it helped tons in the game i played against IG with my BA where it nullified three blood lances which would have knocked out a great many tanks if they had gone through!

I would agree that if IG got one it would need to be priced highly so it wasn't just a thing every army could take as a just in case, and was more of a thoughtout option. It just can't be overpriced haha so that it becomes a waste of points.

Emperor's Tarot is another DH-exclusive Inquisitor item, correct?

Yeah it is. The Witch Hunter equivalent one (Liber Heresius, I think) lets you take a LD test on the Inquisitor (only Inquisitors can take it) before the roll to determine which side players deploy on. Unfortunately that roll no longer exists in standard missions (you roll for first turn), so the item fails.

However, Emperor's Tarot is a fantastic item, and a hood will also be a big boost to guard. I can get behind a hero with these two items.
