I am also new, and I was considering a Space Wolves list before I settled on Blood Angels. Here's what I came up with for Space Wolves for a starting out 500 point list:
HQ: Rune Priest with Living Lightning, JOWW, Meltabombs
Troops: 6 Grey Hunters with 1 Meltagun, Razorback
Troops: 5 Grey Hunters with 1 Meltagun, Razorback
Heavy Support: Long Fangs pack with 5 Missle Launchers, Squad Leader
I'm not sure this list is especially fluffy, but I think it would be effective.

Space Marines in general have a hard time at 500 points. It would probably be better to start at 1,000 points where you can actually learn tactics. At 500 points, dice have a lot more to do with the game, and the guy who brings a Land Raider could reliably crush anyone who left their Meltaguns at home.
If you are playing in a tournament at 500 points that's fine, or if you are just learning the rules then any old thing will do as long as points are even, but if you are really looking to play a few games with a solid list and have a decent grasp on how the game is played, consider the following list at 1,000 points:
Rune Priest (Chooser of the Slain, Meltabombs, Living Lightning, Tempest's Wrath) - 115
3 Wolf Guard (3x Power Fists, 3x Combi-Meltas) - 129 *Attached to Grey Hunters as Pack Leaders*
8 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Rhino) - 170
9 Grey Hutners (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Rhino) - 185
9 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Rhino) - 185
6 Long Fangs (5 Missile Launchers, Razorback w/ TL Lascannon) - 215
Total 999
All of this can be built from 4 Wolf Packs, 4 Razorback kits, 2 packs of Meltaguns from GW and 5 Missile Launcher bits.
The website www.thewarstore.com carries all of the above with a 20% discount for complete plastic kits. Their bitz are sold to order at a reasonable price, though GW has the Meltaguns in packs of 5 for $8 total, which is better than the $6.99 each that TheWarStore charges. It gives you a very versatile set of figures that makes for a great base to expand from, and you can also put together some decent 500 point lists using this collection for practice.
So all told, here is a complete list:
4x Wolf Packs - $149.00
5x Missile Launchers - $44.95
4x Razorbacks* - $140.00
2 packs of Meltaguns** - $16.00 (from GW)
20% off the Wolf Packs and Razorbacks from The War Store.
Total = $292.15 USD plus shipping of course.
*Purchase Razorback kits even if you want Rhinos. For $2 more you get the Razorback turret and all of the parts for the Rhino as well. Just leave the top hatch unglued and you can freely switch between them.
**Use three of the Meltaguns to convert Combi-Meltas. Just cut the Meltagun head off the body and glue it below the barrel of the Bolter. You can also cut the top half of a Bolter off, sand down the top of a Meltagun and glue the Bolter in place, then tidy it up with Green Stuff. However you do it, it's not a difficult conversion.
Anyway, I hope that helps!

The problem is it's slow, and the scoring units are very fragile. Anything half decent that catches your Grey Hunters in combat will tear them apart and move along, and anything mobile will just run past them and attack your Long Fangs. They need transports, even at 500 points, and that makes it difficult.

Too predictable. Full Drop Pod lists have a host of problems that make them far from competitive outside of a few specific builds. New players are always lured in by Drop Pod style lists, then they realize how bad they actually are and have trouble adjusting because they bought all the models. Take my advice and stay away from them until you are more experienced using just standard mech lists, and have a good collection of figures to work with.
Also, at 500 points you cannot get enough Drop Pods to make a useful list.....

I was going to begin a new thread, but seeing how there is already one started for this topic...
First off, I'm a complete newbie, so this list is my first attempt at... well, lists. I'm playing a tutorial game at the local hobby shop (the guys who play there where more than happy to
help out a newcomer) and I need to come up with a 500pt SW army to bring.
Wolf Priest (plasma pistol) - (i'm using the Ulrik model, he is posed with a plasma pistol and I had the extra points)
- 6 GH (plasma gun)
- 6 GH (flamer, standard)
rhino (extra armor)
Dred (twin linked laz)
500pt
I've got a basic grasp of the rules, but nothing along the lines of good strategy to use with SW. I know their strenghts and such, but not exactly how it would translate into their play
style.
Is the Dred a bad decision for a list this small (I just really wanted to use one for my first game), but if it's not a good idea, I'd like some of your thoughts.
