Subject: Couple questions about Forge World dreadnought arms.

So I wanna buy a couple twin linked autocannons to make some riflemen dreadnoughts, but I have a couple concerns:
Do forge world Autocannons have the correct fitting to mount their guns on a normal games workshop dreadnought?
Is there any reasonable doubt that the AC will arrive in good condition? I hear alot of people say forge world is very untrustworthy, sending totally destroyed models to people.
Has resin got any hidden problems? Is it weak? Does it hate glue? Hard to get off the sprue?
I just want to gather as much information as possible so I know Im going the right thing. Im sure dreadnought TLAC's are quite a popular thing to buy from forgeworld, as riflemen DNs are top notch.
Last question: this is more of a speculation question: Will GK be able to field riflemen dreadnoughts? (YES, THEY DO HAVE DREADNOUGHTS, maybe not a new model but THEY DO) they could in the old codex, any reasonable doubt that they will be able to now? Tis my belief a riflemen DN or 2 would fill a very, very important role in the GK armoury, seeing im probably not going to field a stormraven.

Another question: Whats wrong with A dreadnought with 1 TLLC and 1 TLAC? Wouldnt that be more versatile but still be good at its role of hurting transports?

It depends on which version you're buying. I've heard people have had issues fitting Mark IV arms on the "standard" GW dread kit.
The Mark V arm is likely what you'd want, unless you opt to get a Mark IV Grey Knight Dreadnought.
Is there any reasonable doubt that the AC will arrive in good condition? I hear alot of people say Forge World is very untrustworthy, sending totally destroyed models to people.
It's a sad fact that the older the kit you're ordering, the less likely it is to arrive as a "perfect" example. They've never skirted that fact, people just gloss over it and bitch afterwards.
If you get the Mark IV arm, you're likely to have no issues because it's relatively new. The Mark V arm though...yeah, that's likely to have some issues. It's been a hot seller since...well, as long as I can remember it being on the FW site back when I was first entering high school!
It's also important to remember that you can call FW for a replacement piece if what you receive is miscast. They will replace it, at no charge to you.
Has resin got any hidden problems? Is it weak? Does it hate glue? Hard to get off the sprue?
It's not hard to get off the sprue, but you do have to be a bit careful. The more fiddly bits can potentially lead to you chopping off a large amount of the piece itself off by accident if you use too much force.
It can be weak, but that tends mostly towards the more fiddly and brittle parts(think of sword blades, etc for that example).
Basically, with resin you're going to be using the same kind of glue you use for metal models(Cyanoacrylate "Superglue"). It doesn't "hate" glue...but the glue does work far better if you sand the two contact surfaces up a bit. You'll also have to wash the resin bits very very very thoroughly, because the mold release agent can sometimes stick and prevent paint/primer from adhering.
I just want to gather as much information as possible so I know I'm doing the right thing. I'm sure dreadnought TLAC's are quite a popular thing to buy from Forge World, as riflemen DNs are top notch.

I doubt it. It's more likely GK Dreads will end up having a role similar to Drop Sentinels in an Elysian army.

(On elysian drop sentinels) What melt and die?
Thanks for the answers, but this begs another question. if the mark IV right arm doesnt have a good fitting for GW DNs what does the left ac arm have? Is it a FW or GW fitting? Automatically Appended Next Post: In any case Ill wait for the codex before creating a GK riflemen DN.

Jaon wrote:(On elysian drop sentinels) What melt and die?
Pft No, they fulfill a role that standard trooper heavy weapons don't. They either fulfill the role of a "mobile anti-personnel gun platform" by having the Heavy Bolter or "dedicated tank hunter" by having the Multi-Melta onboard.
Thanks for the answers, but this begs another question. if the mark IV right arm doesnt have a good fitting for GW DNs what does the left ac arm have? Is it a FW or GW fitting?
I would assume it could actually fit properly on both, but the Mark IV body would need a bit of work to accept it.
But it's likely it has a GW fitting, since it was produced for IA2 which was before the Mark IV was even in the conceptual stage.

I have several of the FW autocannon arms, I forget if I ordered mkIV or V but the holes are just a bit too small for the pins on a GW dread's body. It wouldn't be any big deal to drill them out a little wider but I magnetize my dreads arms anyway so it won't matter. Honestly I don't think they are that good looking, your opinion may vary but I don't care for the drum magazines hanging out like Micky Mouse ears.
I prefer my own conversion with the Leman Russ executioner autocannons and a heavy bolter sponson ammo can, but I got the FW parts because I doubted my ability to make matching left and right arms.
I have an old pic of my conversion. This version was too long, I cut out a section of the barrels to shorten it and it looks really nice

Fixed that for you. This is the second time I've seen you imply that people who get warped deformed crap from forgeworld are somehow to blame for not knowing how old the molds are for their particular item, a statistic I hasten to add which is not published anywhere.

I hope this isn't considered threadjacking, because the OP did ask what quality he'd receive. Your responses are accurate but do not need apology or evangelizing on behalf of FW. I've gotten quite a few things from them: some are really nice, some have been absolutely garbage, and it's like a box of chocolates. My Tomb Stalker had some miscast legs, which I didn't bother calling them about since they were extras; but that was a kit I ordered literally the first day it was available.

It's a nice concept. I like what you've done with the weapons. What's up with the legs - did you scratchbuild those or what? They look different.

I've got just about every FW Dread arm there is, so let me take a stab at these questions:
Jaon wrote:Do forge world Autocannons have the correct fitting to mount their guns on a normal games workshop dreadnought?
The ones designed for their own resin Dreads will have some issues (and the attached targeter, or Storm Bolter/Heavy Flamer in case of the DCCW's will have no where to go). The original ones though, way at the bottom of the Marine Dread section, and the 'Mortis' arms were designed for the standard plastic Dread. I've had no problem fitting them onto my plastic Dreads. I don't stick them on though, because I like to mix'n'match my Dread arms.
Jaon wrote:Is there any reasonable doubt that the AC will arrive in good condition? I hear alot of people say forge world is very untrustworthy, sending totally destroyed models to people.
The Autocannons, especially the right-side ones, are very old kits. They're also long thin barrels so they will be warped. Given that FW's QA is essentially non-existent this is unavoidable. That said, they are small pieces, so I'd imagine the warpage won't be too bad. Note that this applies to the Autocannons, the Inferno Cannon arm and maybe the TL-Lascannon arms. The rest arrived without flaw.
Jaon wrote:Has resin got any hidden problems? Is it weak? Does it hate glue? Hard to get off the sprue?
It's brittle. There is no sprue (or often no sprue - there wasn't in the case of the Dread arms, and other than the DCCWs and the TL-Heavy Bolter they're all one piece anyway). If you're sticking them to the Dread, green stuff + super glue will do the job.
Jaon wrote:I just want to gather as much information as possible so I know Im going the right thing. Im sure dreadnought TLAC's are quite a popular thing to buy from forgeworld, as riflemen DNs are top notch.
I bought my two pairs of AC arms just 'cause they look awesome. And they do look awesome!

Who knows? Depends who's writing the Codex.

Those legs are a recast, I made a mold from my metal Furioso's legs then just bought dread bodies and arms on ebay. Why yes, I am cheap. That heavy bolter arm is also based on part of a right hand DCCW arm I cloned

You mean other than this site, in practically every Forge World thread by practically anyone who's bought from them?

Where did I say it's "above and beyond"? I didn't even imply such a thing. My emphasis was to put the point across that if you want the problem fixed, you need to contact Forge World. Not DakkaDakka.
People come on here and complain that they have broken parts and their expensive kit is "ruined!". Complaining here does nothing. Getting in touch with Forge World, on the other hand, solves the problem.
I hope this isn't considered threadjacking, because the OP did ask what quality he'd receive. Your responses are accurate but do not need apology or evangelizing on behalf of FW.
There was no apology or evangelizing. It's a simple statement of fact. There's also the fact that maybe it's time for a sticky thread regarding "Forge World Purchasing" FAQs.
I've gotten quite a few things from them: some are really nice, some have been absolutely garbage, and it's like a box of chocolates. My Tomb Stalker had some miscast legs, which I didn't bother calling them about since they were extras; but that was a kit I ordered literally the first day it was available.
It sucks when you get some issues, but again: it's nice to be able to get replacement parts within a reasonable amount of time(and before you say it: yes. They are becoming far more reasonable in their reply/fixing times now Sometimes it's still a bit lengthy, but it's not as bad as some companies I've dealt with).
As an example: I'm still fighting with AFV Club to get a replacement part for a seriously miscast piece on a Strkyer APC, where I submitted the claim for a replacement part almost a bloody year ago.
Jaon wrote:hmm, I wish forge world would tell us these things.
Would be nice, yeah. I would have loved to known that the Dark Angels Venerable Dread wouldn't fit onto the Mk. IV Dread scenic base.

I actually had a good experience from them. My first order included a Heirophant, a Winged Hive Tyrant and some Warrior wings.
The Winged Hive Tyrant and the Warrior wings were perfect. The Heirophant has a little bit of extra resin inside the stomach area that I can file out, and a little bit of resin on the head, in the area where the head joins to the tosoe, again which I just need to file out.
Those are pretty old models too.
