Often when people are reading a book and something happens (usually a battle) we create images in our heads of how it would look and usually these images are epic 300 esque scenes. Given the nature of 40k it's possible to picture these moments in more then just books.

It could be that a player is imagining how an in game event would look in real life, modeling a character or unit as if it was in the middle of a swirling combat or bracing itself to fire or even reading the fluff entry in a codex which causes an image to pop into their head. What are some of these types of images that you have had or imagined?

Here is one of my own.

An Imperial Guard patrol is investigating an ancient tomb when a great door slides open, the guardsmen train their weapons waiting to see what happens. From the darkness comes a chittering sound followed by first a green glow emitted from a staff weapon, then a torso and finally a pair of eyes as a Necron Lord emerges into the light and the squad opens fire.

Ya, Abaddon, holding back a tide of 54(might have been 44 or 34) my hormagaunts, and then whipping them into submission. In an epic brawl, Xenos blood was spilled across the wastes, with Abaddon, standing without mercy above the last gaunt, swinging it's limbs wildly. He raised his blade, and plunged it deep through the Xeno's head.

That, and, in the same battle, the three remaining Devilgaunts(this was back in 4th ed. where the devourers were Strength 2) fired their rounds into the two chaos Terminators. The beetles hit the soft spots of the armor, burrowing deep into the flesh of the Terminators. Consuming the nervous system quickly and effeciently, as they fell, lifeless...

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

see these all sound cool I think it's one of the reasons I like DoW so much is you can actually see the units move and such. They kind of have life

The imagined last stand of my Warsmith was pretty cool. he was standing in the centre of a horde of SW, roaring defiance even as they brought him down by weight of numbers.
Poor dude. At least he got an awesome death.

That's is indeed awesome, did he take many of them with him?

Here's mine: My inquisitor is facing off against a massive mega-armoured ork warboss, she's down to her last wound and both her retinue and the orks are lying dead around her feet, the ork warboss is still at max wounds and is certain that this puny human is seconds from death, as his power-claw lunches toward her neck, she steps inside his swing and thrusts her force-sword through his jaw and with a bellow of rage and physic power cooks the foul creature within his own skin.

gotta love the Daemon hunters force weapons.

I don't think Fantasy has more scope for epic battles considering that same scene could exist in 40k with a Terminator shield wall standing against a horde of Tyranids. Yours is cool all the same I just don't think Fantasy has more scope then 40k.

Also the great thing about imagined scenes that come from in game events is that your models/heros will always come back to fight again thanks to "they where just wounded not killed" syndrome

He managed about 4 dudes in the end. The bodyguard squad managed 2.
Of course, his loyal followers managed to recover his near-dead form, so he shall have his revenge one day...

I wanna go back to New Jersey

My Shas'O deepstriked behind a BA Libby at a tagteam tourney and then cinema came to mind.

Whilst safetly viewing his fellow Space Marines tear and blast assunder the Ork offenders the Librarian of the Blood Angels chapter was calmly trying to hold back his lust to jump into the fray and tear all before him. Suddenly his concentration had become molested by a very close and strage crashing noise that stole his attention. He turned to see himself dwarfed by a foul Xenos machine thrusting it into a menacing stance with it's loud proplsion device from its back. It quickly brought forth its offending arm-like appendage and from it unleashed a twisting blast of light death at the helpless surprised Librarian. But, before the psychic would soon meet his demise a sudden spark of red lighting had fiercely stirred around the marine and a crack louder than the entire battle around him had sounded. This noise was none other caused by the Libraian himself as he had used the power he held back to use the mere back of his hand to misdirect the foul blast the Xeno had volleyed at him. With the miserable piloted Xeno machine left dumbfounded at the sight of its powerful attack being shrugged off, the Librarian had summoned to his aid his reserved Psychic fury and dashed towards his opponent, heavenly red lightning following.

After that, the Libby's force-weapon insta-gibbed my Shas'O and the rest of the battle was to the two BA players.

My homebrewed SM chapter master facing off against my buddies Wolf Lord. Both had thunder hammers, both were terminators and both had lost their retinues. As the battle raged around them they came together on the lip of a cliff overlooking the icy river below. Bellowing with rage they charged each other neither landing a telling blow for several moments (rounds). Each strike was turned aside by the might of their storm shields and enchanted belts. Finally, with the Space Wolves reeling from the onslaught of my forces they both rallied and smote each other to the ground. Epic battle. 3 rounds of combat in which neither could make a wound stick and then the final round where both of us did, causing instant death to us both.

Second would be my veteran IG droptrooper sgt with powersword charging into a group of three Grey Hunters. And killing them all.

I guess another would by my KOS biker warboss having his entire army shot out from under him (except for four Nobz and two bikers) in one turn of shooting from heavily entrenched SoB. Once he finally hit their lines like a comet he was unstoppable. Exorcists, Rhinos, Dominion squads, Celestians, both the Palatine and Cannoness all fell beneath his mighty Klaw. Though he was battered he slew almost half the enemy by himself.

I like to imagine quite a few squads of Dire Avengers, carefully positioning themselves as the UltraMarines press the advance. Exarchs look to the skies, and notice Falcons coming to pick up their squads, Pulse Lasers firing. The Exarchs (of varied sex), quickly order a Bladestorm from their squads. Quickly following orders, the survivors unleash the last of their ammo in fury, as the Marine Sergeants quickly order the squad to get behind cover from the withering storm of fire. As the last of the ammo is shot, the Falcons land, and the Avengers quickly get on-board. As the Marines begin their assault again, the Falcons fly off at top speed, bringing away the last of the Eldar forces who will live to fight another day.

Yeah its cool to imagine battles like that, although the battles never seem to go as you've predicted/would be natural. For example my chaos sorcerer charging in squad of couple tyranid gaunts and getting killed instantly.. (Altough those occasions would be very interesting to see)

CSM 40k : ~4.3k
Skaven : FB ~2,5k
Daemons FB & 40k ~1,7k
Lizardmen 1k

Lotsa chaos

I've decided to add a few of my others.

I was playing a allied game of Tau and Eldar versus CSM and Imperial Guard. As my Monat (single suit) Shas'o O'Ka'mesa dropped through the atmosphere he was attacked by fighters (IG officer of the fleet piloted by gue'la who had fallen to the Mon'tau delaying his descent to the battle below. As he fought his comm system was alive with reports of a monstrous creature (daemon prince) ripping it's way through his Fire Warriors and Kroot auxiliaries, after destroying the last fighter he locked on to the last transmission of one of his squads. As he landed he witnessed a humanoid beast ripping a unit of his Eldar allies to shreads, as the beast prepaired to charge he sighted his plasma rifle but before he fired he felt as if something was Guiding (hint hint) his aim, as the shot struck the beast in the head it roared in rage as it began to dissapear (it only had 1 wound remaining when my Shas'o shot it and my Shas'o had recieved Guide from an allied Farseer). With the Mon'tau beast dead the Shas'o moved to aid the rest of his force.

As Autarch Balor Swiftaxe raced his jetbike across the open ground towards the Ork horde his heart raced with the thrill of battle to come, behind him rode the greatest warriors of his clan the Shining Spears of Khaine. As crude ork bullets deflected off of the speeding bulk of his jetbike he identified the Warboss of the greenskin horde, as one his clan brothers aligned themselves with their leader racing towards the great beast and it's Nob bodyguard. Roaring it's crude warcry the Warboss hefted it's powerclaw and charged, as the forces of Saim Hann prepared to clash with the fowl Orks the Shining Spears loward their lances while Balor raised his axe. Crashing into the Warboss and his bodyguard Balor felt the spirit of Khaine within his viens, as the lances broke his guard Balor swept his axe through the Warboss' roaring head breaking the will of the ork horde in one powerfull strike.

Pretty much the pivitol point in the game as we where tied for objectives and his warboss+nobs had the last one, he shot me and didn't wound, I charged and wiped his Nobs in the first assault and then my Autarch killed his warboss and I ended up winning the game. I've got more but I'm being lazy

The entry of the sternguard always comes to mind. I imagine 5 marines standing in the centre of a vast valley, all planets and vegetation destroyed by artillery and the flames of war, and a massive battle raging about them between a space marine battle company and the forces of chaos. The sternguard are knee deep in the dead of the fallen, but they refuse to take one step back. They are in the open, there is no cover, and chaos marines charge at them from all directions, and each falls a couple meters short as specialized ammunition blasts them to pieces. The sky is dark with streaks of red and orange through it from a war that has been waging for months. Destroyed tanks are all around, and yet 5 sternguard stand in the middle of the battle, holding a line that was long abandoned by their brothers.

Oh and one game where my terminators took a difficult terrain test to punch through a brick wall and assault some nurgle marines (note these were ranged terminators) the nurgle marines struck first, no casualties on the terminator side.

Then the terminators proceeded to pound ALL of them to death (8 terminators assaulted 10 nurgle marines)

I just love imagining the nurgle marines taking cover and firing their boltguns over a damaged ruin and then out of no where a full squad of terminators punch through the wall and smash them to pieces with their powerfists.

I had one with a friend and his tau today.

My Lord watched from his Immortal retinue his legions of Warriors march into Tau firing lines measuring a weak spot. Finally seeing all he wanted, he scuttles forward on his scorpion body and leaps into a nearby fire warrior tear tearing into them. The sudden cries of death and pain caused momentary panic to those nearby as volumes of gauss fire intensified with the arrival of a fresh Monolith and new waves of Warriors pouring into the breach the Lord created. Shortly after all that was left was vitrified corpses, spent cartridges and the Shas'O transfixed on an emerged crystal sprouting, a strange symbol of victory being adopted in the sector.

Lysander faced off against a chaos lord of khorne. the guy rolled double 6s for his attacks, and hit with 14 of the blows, wounding with 13. Lysander makes 12 of his 13 invul saves.

The Khorne lord, frothing at the mouth with boundless rage engages Lysander in man to man combat. A flury of blows reigns down from his axe, making brutal contact with Lysander's shield. An endless barrage of hate later, the final blow overpowers Lysander's formidable defence, planting itself frimly into the terminator armor and chest of the aged captain. Lysander rises, pinning the axe in his own body. the chaos lord struggles to get it free, but to no avail!

the last thing that filthy heretic saw before his headless body fell to the ground with a dull thudd was the fist of dorn connecting with his helmet.
