Im running a vanilla SM army.. I wanna arm some SGTs with chain axes and have them count as chainswords. My only concern is are there different rules for chain axes.. would this bar me from playing with them?

No, it is a purely cosmetic difference. A CCW is a CCW.

As said, it's just a different looking chain weapon, which is just another CCW weapon as far as the rules are concerned. Model it how you want.

The only different melee weapons that I can remember that have bits are:

Power swords
Power fists
Chain fists
Force weapons (kinda)
Lightning claws
Thunder hammers
There are also some things that are said to be relic blades, but I protest since they are visually axes.
