Dilemma: Having a drop podding iron hands army and looking to fill my ranks.

I realized that the drop pods can have the locator becon, which removes deep striking issues. Would taking a 5 man squad of vets using heroic intervention be worth doing in range of the locator beacon since the pods will basically encircle my opponents forces with one or two behind for support. I know that trying to pull it off is hellishly expensive, but then again it could be the thing that save me from whatever horrors my opponent places.

Anyone have experience trying such a thing? How well did it go? Or am I just thinking about a cool idea that isn't really worth trying to pull off.

Please keep in mind this is for non-tourney play, I just enjoy playing the game.

Thanks!

Might get more replies in the Tactics section

On topic, i think that it would be a very diverse squad, but incredibly expensive.

Also, they would all be striking at I 1.

edit: idiocy

Yeah, right...

As stated expensive, but if i was hell-bent on doing it I would maybe keep at least some weapons at regular I, like lightning claws or whatever

I think the OP means that he'll drop down using JPs near the beacon.

I can see this working against artillery guard, and moderately effectively too if you can make back the points. TH would be great against vehicles camped at the back line since the initiative penalty is moot. They can also at least prevent said vehicle from firing, or outright blowing it up.

In non-tourney play you can certainly do anything.
If you want VV with hammers, you need to give them storm shields, too.

It's a lot of points...A lot.

That and not being able to assault after DS'ing is a huge problem as it allows your apponent to completely annihalate that costly unit before they can react. If you can wave enough tasty morsels that they dont choose that squad it could work, or if you can drop them behind a drop pod...

Chances are though that you wont get them till turn 3, inactive after the drop so you wont be able to utilize them until turn 4 in a good scenario. In my opinion I hope you have already destroyed all of the hi-pri targets so TH seem redundant.

800 brethren and 2,000 other personnel were expected to reach Crows World within no more than 12 hours. They never arrived.

Heroic Interventions allows them to assault in lieu of shooting or running after a deepstrike. Drop pods also have at least one arriving on the first turn if you decide to take them at all. It's extremely tactically sounds, just hellishly expensive.

To get the same general effect, but keep it more points efficient, you could try something like 5 man squad, 3 with thunder hammers and 2 with melta bombs. Or actually, you might just be able to use 1 with TH/SS, and then the other 4 with melta bombs (and maybe a power weapon). That way, assuming they didn't move, you can auto-stun and get 4 auto-melta bomb hits. Seems like it could reduce a vehicle to slag pretty easily.
