I want to start a new WHFB army, but I just can't decide.

I would prefer a small but powerful army, which would lead me to either any elf army or Ogres, but I have reasons why I don't like any of these.

High Elves: Almost all good-looking plastic models, which is a pro, but I really don't like their fluff.
Dark Elves: Great-looking modes, good fluff, but almost all metal, and I absolutely hate working with metal models.
Wood Elves: Pretty crap models, crap fluff, out of date.
Ogre Kingdoms: Great models, with plenty of conversion potential. Con is crap fluff.

I can't decide between any army, really. I was leaning to either Ogres or Dark Elves, but I don't want to commit to anything until I decide properly.

Any suggestions?

Another option to consider is Chaos Mortals (or whatever the current nomenclature is) you'll have generally very few models, but they will be bloody powerful.

Of the ones you listed, I'd probably go with the Dark Elves, simply because both the the look of the models and the background details are cool.

As to the metal vs plastic thing, Warriors, Corsairs & Cold One Knights are all plastic, and you're definitely going to be needing those in your army.

If you go warriors heavy chaos mortals you could keep your numbers low but effectiveness high. Though you always have the option of marauder units if you decide you want more expendable bodies to throw into melee's.

Hm, I had heard Warriors of Chaos were pretty point-inefficient, plus the lack of shooting stuck out at me as pretty worrying.

I gues sit depends on setups. Theyre a solid core that can be customized with weapons/marks for whatever close combat roles you want. For shooting you can supplement that with a lvl 4 spellcaster and hellcannon as well.

That'd be true if they weren't one of the best armies.

Elves... are elves. Strike First, but not as strong.

WoC beefy guys, beast in combat.

Ogre Kingdoms, really big guys, small army, probably one of the best in melee

Why not try Dwarfs?

I actually have a small Dwarf army, and really didn't like playing them. They'd be dead by the time I had a chance to do anything, thanks to how slow they are.

That was another I considered, but as much as I hear, the only way they're good these days is with big blocks of Saurus.

They have the best Mages in the game if you're down with magic shooting.

Not sure what 8th edition is like with them, but I saw a battle report where the Slaan or Slann annihilated the enemy with ease.

Yes the standard LM list is slaan with TG and 2 saurus blocks but the rest is open to intepretation, monster spam is harder to win with this ed but LM are the only army that can really still do it, and against canonless armies (so all but 2 all armies in existance) it tends to be devastating.
I won't go into some expanded tactics here but light magic + saursus + monsters = resilient troops with stompy flankers. Also the sallamander is likely one of the most undercosted units in 8th, being able to march and still unleash that fire thrower shot on the enemy large blocks is just naaasty.

I'm looking a lot at Ogres. I like the idea of just having a "deathstar" of really powerful units, and they seem to have had a bit of a boost in 8th thanks to buffstacking and the new monster infantry rules.

Don't believe it! I think there's mileage in other builds. Certainly saurus have a place, though...

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

Well, after some research, I've decided on Ogre Kingdoms. The models are too awesome not to!

Plus, thanks to the low model count (bar gnoblars) means I can lavish extra detail on every model.

Have fun with your Ogres bro!

Yeah have fun. Ogre kingdoms benefit much from the 8th edition rules. Plus are one of the cheaper armies money-wise to field.
