what level psyker is magnus?

Mid-to-higher level beta psyker is likely. I'm not sure how much of his personal power was taken to do what he did in that Heresy Novel (avoiding spoilers).

I say this becuase Alpha level psykers are truly terrifying creatures which are quickly consumed and/or used as a portal for major deamon incursions. While Magnus was strong, I doubt his ability to have gone for so long and dabbled in such sorcery without being snapped up immediately. (And it also wouldn't explain why he didn't just fling much of the Space Wolf legion aside)

As far as I know only the Emperor has the raw power required that possibly surpasses Alpha level, allowing him to challenge the very entities that would seek to posses lesser creatures.

this may be kind of a thousand sons loving based opinion but lexicanum says this about alpha level psykers "Uncontained, Alpha-Plus psykers represent an immediate and catastrophic threat to the Imperium. I would say Magnus is beyond Alpha, he was said to be the most powerful human psyker other than the Emperor.

I would say Magnus is beyond Alpha, he was said to be the most powerful human psyker other than the Emperor.

This, especially now that he's a Daemon Prince of Tzeentch. And, considering that the Emperor intended to use Magnus as power source for the Golden Throne, something Malcador the Sigilite, an immensely powerful psyker managed to do for around two hours before being turned to dust, one would assume that Magnus easily qualifies as an Alpha-level psyker.

The fact that he's a deamon prince means little given that the rank isn't awarded according to pskyer prowess. If Magnus is indeed an Alpha level psyker I wonder if his abilities have manifested in abnormal ways (such as scrying, which revealed the Heresy) or were more suppressed due to him being a primarch. He certainly didn't go around snapping titans or summoning deamon legions too often.

The emperor purposely created Magnus to be only second in psychic power to himself. It's probable that the Emperor didn't want magnus going out of control (and as well as being a primarch, who would have an incredible psychic resistance, for example Horus, whom the Chaos gods had to maniuplate him with trickery as they obviously couldn't possess him) perhaps by making some sort of organic Gellar feild in his mind

I would say Alpha +. He may have only been an alpha level (Reading the book I believe he was) but with his ascension to Daemon Prince of tzeentch I believe he would have become even more powerful. Not sure where on the + side of alpha though.

If we used the old rating system of 1-4 for tabletop psykers (similer to fantasy warhammer) with 5 for exceptional talent (nagash anyone?) then Magnus's power level would be...

So the Emperor is "Beyond Beyond Classification"?

The Emperor is beyond classification. He is Alpha +. He goes past what they classify.

And he shows the power in the First Heretic where he forced 100,000 Word Bearers,an entire legion to it's knees.Considering that Space Marines have iron will and maybe resistance to those sorts of things that feat is impressive.

Given that there are "regular" human alpha levels running around the Imperium, Magnus would be at least an Alpha++.

That puts him on par with every other Alpha. It's not that he's more powerful than an Alpha, it's the fact that he could control it so well without exploding into a fountain of deamonic energy.

Magnus was highly likely an Alpha/+ psyker, but what made him so string was the fact that he could control such ridiculous amounts of energy wihtout a daemon zapping into his brain.
