Not sure if this is the right place.

Anyone else notice that the goal of the Decepticons from Transformers 2 is to activate a machine that will harvest energy from the sun.

Maybe the director/writers/producers are fans of the Necrons?

I doubt there is any direct connection I just thought I'd point out that 2 entirely differant evil robots seem to have the same goal at one point

And in the 1st movie there is a mechanical Tomb Scorpian with a head that looks ALOT like a Tomb Spyder and both movies have parts that happen in the desert of the middle east or Egypt.

As a star is the main source of energy for any system it inhabits (binary/trinary systems excluded for convenience). As Freeman Dyson noted as far back as 1959, civilizations consume more energy the more advanced their tech becomes and it becomes more natural for civilizations of higher technology to seek more direct ways of obtaining energy from stars. The notion of consuming stars in order to selfishly take their energy for yourself ties very nicely into modern day anxieties about energy dependence and the ability of organizations more powerful than you to take the things you depend on for survival but don't directly own.

I wouldn't put it past the people behind Transformers to swipe their ideas from elsewhere, but I think it's far more likely they were just hitting on a basic trope of science fiction that has legs in our time.

The Cybertronians harvesting energon from stars is as old as the Transformers cartoon themselves (and this also predates 40k).

I'd like to punch Michael Bay in the throat for what he did to the Transformers.

Frankly, now I'm afraid that when he googles himself, this thread might come up, and he might discover 40K. A Michael Bay 40k movie... jesus wept.

Are you kidding. That would be the perfect fit for a 40k film. Hundreds dying, massive splosions, absurd over-the-top action, occasional crappy puns.

You may disagree, but then I'd suspect you have an overly romantic view of what 40k is.

Michael Bay would make an awesome 40k movie.

I liked his transformers movies - but then I thought the cartoons sucked donkey balls - even if I was a kid when they started.

I didn't really watch cartoons much as a kid.

Romantic, yes - that's something he always throws a string of, in every movie. The love between the the rugged and speechless Necron Lord and the stoic female Blood Angels commander was forbidden - but it felt so right.

Not to mention the comic relief antics of the two racist talking scarabs!

I actually haven't seen it yet. Heard the first one was rubbish, and the second made the first look like Shakespeare by comparison. I'm just speculating, because there's really only so many directions I expected Bay to go with "they want to eat the sun!" He probably wasn't going to have the Decepticons set up a profitable Solar licensing system which demands royalties from every thing on the planet that experiences solar warmth, and expects payment in the form of energon futures.

HERESY!!!!! - i liked the Bay movies, but as someone who owns literally every single Transformers cartoon put out since 1984 (There's a LOT)m most of them don't suck donkey balls (Except for 'Transformers: Energon') they just aren't as good as the comics (especially the Marvel UK Transformers Generation 1 series from the 80s)

No one wrote them like that, the voice actors(one of which is black and was surprised to hear that he was offensive to himself) came up with that on their own while having fun with their parts and Bay allowed it, despite the objections of the script's writers.

So if anyone is to blame for them being "racist", it's a black man.

Before you run off and blame someone for something, you may want to actually look into who's responsible next time.

I liked both of the Transformers movies. I quite honestly don't understand all the hate. The first one was hard to see... my brain had trouble comprehending the action at times, but I liked the plot.

OT: They're evil robots. They're similar. I highly doubt one was based on the other.

Seeing as most people don't see a connection (other than being mechanical) and the 'evidence' you have presented is flawed due to a lack of knowledge of transformers stories. Maybe people have come on the internet to talk to others, there is a big difference between hijacking and a natural evolution of a thread.

Ah I was waiting for someone to make an innacurate assumption today, you win the prize

Maybe people have come on the internet to talk to others, there is a big difference between hijacking and a natural evolution of a thread.

Ok then you and those others can take your discussion else where because like it or not theis thread isn't about the quality of the movie itself. Maybe the MODs need to make a sticky thread which informs people that just because they don't agree with something dosen't give them permission to take it in a differant direction. Given that there is a count of how many people have read the thread you have no way of knowing wether or not what people think about the actual topic because not everyone on Dakka has seen it.

The thread has gotten off topic and false (in that you assume my knowledge of Transformers comes only from the movies based off of my mentioning of them and yet it didn't enter your mind that I've always been a fan of the comic book as well as the old cartoons and mentioned the movie for those who haven't followed the series) assumptions won't change that. So either get back to the topic, or make your own thread, this isn't a hard concept to understand. Or maybe everyone on Dakka thinks that they can just do whatever they want.

Well, Johira really nailed it in the third post.

Everything after that was more or less off topic, but conversations do evolve organically, especially if the original question in the thread has been answered, or people have nothing new to say regarding it.

It's generally considered courteous to bring the discussion back on topic if the original poster so requests, but it helps if he's polite in asking, too. It also usually helps him to get the thread back On Topic if he offers new info/observations or asks a new question or two about the original topic that people can respond to.

That's Scorpinok. He's been a Transformer for ages.

Transformers has nothing to do with Warhammer. Ever. In any way whatsoever. Gathering energy from the sun is a super common trope, and by that same logic Birdman would be a Blood Angel.

I respect this, but I would like to point out that my actual post suggesting that the thread get back on topic was in no way rude.

I was rude when I got a response trying to justify that the thread shoulden't get back on topic and when it was implied that I have no prior knowledge of the Transformers universe based off of an assumption that was wrong.

I doubt that the question could be definitivly answered by the 2-3 people who actually responded on topic, especially since the question wasen't asked in order to have a deffinitive answer but simply to spark a conversation about the similarities between the 2 groups which quiet a few exist within the Transformers cannon. If the conversation had evolved into something along the lines of how much differant examples of Sci-fi over lap which is at least directly relevant to the oiriginal discussion (not just one part of it) then I could understand that. But discussing wether or not the movie was good or not is not an evolution of the actual discussion it is something completly differant.

I have no problem being polite or respectfull, as long as the person I am talking to deserves it.

A basic fact of life is that one may start a discussion, but they have very little power over where that discussion goes (unless they're a mod). Accepting this fact will help you avoid inflicting a great deal of suffering on yourself.

Being polite and respectful, at least on this forum, is something we try to do regardless of how the other person is acting. If they're out of line, hit Alert Mod, and either don't respond or respond as courteously as you can manage. Two wrongs don't make a right, and the nicer you are, the worse the other person looks if they were rude.

I agree that talking about the merits of the movie was definitely off topic.

You first post asking to get back on topic didn't so much come across asking; more "laying down the law", which always gets a rise out of some people. Though the smily definitely helped. You catch more flies with honey, and all that.

@Johira: Sitting back and watching people take my discussion into a direction it isn't ment to go isn't something I'm going to do. I don't care if it's going to help me avoid conflict (I have no problem with it if it comes). I don't care if I'm a MOD or not, if one of my threads is going off topic I'll handel it and the majority of readers have no problem going back on topic but if there is someone who dosen't and keeps posting content that dosen't belong in the discussion I alert the MODS. Now if some people don't like how I handle it fine that's their problem not mine.

@Chromedog: Hence why those who don't respect the idea of either staying on topic or going back to it after digressing will get no respect from me

@Mannahnin: No dissrespect intended I get what you're saying but I don't sugar coat myself or anything I say and do for anyone. I asked everyone to get back on topic, if they didn't like the way I said it because I didn't put "oh pretty please everyone can we get back on topic it would mean so much to me if you would" that's not my problem. I asked the members to go back to the main topic and the only way it was actually rude is if someone took it that way.

As I said I have no problem being respectfull or polite anyone here can go through the majority of any thread I've created or participated in and see that. But I will not be polite, respectfull, civil or nice to someone who dosen't deserve it nor will I sit back and let others handle things that can be delt with myself (which is why those that can't are sent to the MODs). That's the way I am and it isn't going to change. If I eventually get kicked off the site for it then hey it sucks because I like the site but it isn't going to change.

I'm just letting you know what's expected here. If you choose to disregard the advice of the moderators, that generally leads to more work for us, and less posting for you.
