So today I found out that my collection of codex/models went up in flames
I left most of my collection in canada with my younger brother under the assumption that i would ship it here when I could afford it
And I found out today the apartment they were in had a massive fire & they lost everything!
A collection of codexes ranging from 2nd to recent were destroyed, along with a ton of orks / chaos / marines / guard
I will NEVER be able to replace all the outdated codexes!

All I am left with is a couple of books & a handful of unassembled models I took with me!!
I used to have some pretty big armies but now they have been destroyed. WAT DO?!?!

Please join me in mourning the loss of my entire collection
What should i do? Rebuild years of work & thousands of dollars spent? Call it quits? play dawn of war instead?

My brothers are safe and they escaped with the cats. I just figured if I was going to post on dakka about it all you guys would are about is the warhammer. Don't look at me like i don't give a care about my bros! I feel the pain man, they lost all their computers, xbox/ps3, super old magic cards.. the works..... Feels bad man...

Sorry about the loss of your of collection. Two questions:

1]Do you still want to play 40k?
2]If so, which models do you have?

With that info I think it'll be easier to give advice.

I have... lets see.. AOBR dread, the parts for a space marine and chaos sergeant kitted with plasma pistol & pw...A metal cadian sergent with the same eq. one kroot. and an ork nob with uge choppa. not much really
I brought the aobr rulebook, blood angels, space marine and chaos daemons books with me.

Having heard this happened, I don't know what to do.

I suppose I will continue playing, but i seriously cannot afford to replace everything and the options I have are severely limited.
If i recollect, it will be a choice between vanilla, BA, and CD... as those are what I had planned to collect in the future.. losing all my old bits and armies really limits my conversion options.

Do you think i should keep going? or is this a sign from whatever y'all worship (The Emperor?) that I should put down the plastic dudes?

I feel you, dude. A few years back I was in a similiar situation, and lost almost everything. (including some fairly old 2nd ed. stuff.)

Try and keep your head up. My Imperial army has come back twice as strong since the bulk of it was lost to the warp.

Ask yourself: What would the Emperor do?

Did your brothers have insurance for the apartment? and if they did, was there enough to replace what was lost?(both their posessions and yours?)
I myself would probably rebuild, start a new army, and hope the same thing dosn't happen. Perhaps get a fireproof safe to store your mini's(and other valuables) in?(I know I'd be paranoid about this happening again)

I think you should definitely keep playing. Pick an army such as the ones you mentioned and then sell the other models for some cash and use that to build up the army you choose.

For instance you said you have an AOBR Dread, a Space Marine Sergeant, a Chaos Marine Sergeant, a Cadian Sergeant, a Kroot, and an Ork. I think you should pick an army (for this example I'll say Space Marines), and then sell the Chaos Sergeant, the Cadian Sergeant, the Kroot, and the Ork. From those you could probably get close to about $30 for them all and then use that to get started. Go out and buy a Space Marine Captain with the $30, spend about $60 more on Tactical Squads (or if your BA Assault Squads) and you already have about 750pts with the Dread, Captain, and 2 squads. Then you can just work your way up from there. Again I'm using this as an example you could go with any of the armies mention, but I would recommend not quitting. It's an awesome game and I think you will be pleased with yourself if you keep going.

Let me ask you one more question, do you miss playing Warhammer? Do you think about it often? Finally, do you like painting and building? If you answered yes to the first question and 1 of the others than definitely keep playing!

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to your stuff.

If you or your brother have insurance you should be able to get everything back. I know a lot of Canadian policies cover losses of family members stuff kept at your dwelling (so your brothers insurance should be able to re-coup some of these costs).

I wouldn't say quit, this game is an investment of time and pleasure. See what you can get and rebuild my friend, stick with it. It is sad to lose a lot of the older codex's but keep your eye on ebay every month or two , some may pop up.

Yeah I have to say i really miss having an opinion on the current metagame. I really enjoyed building and even though I suck, painting as well. all my plans went up in smoke tho
And I used to read those codexes. every.damn.day. still read the ones i have here really regularly (even though i have utterly exhausted all the material within & know the armies really well) the loss of all my old codexes makes checking up on fluff impossible

Sadly there is all of 0 market in this area and i might as well keep what I have left.

I don't believe they had insurance which is super unfortunate. It doesn't seem like they were planning on anything going wrong..

Grey knights do sound badass.

Anyways I will be hard pressed to come up with the funds to restart.. I guess it really does lend to a approach of "wait until X army comes out"

in retrospect I wish I had.. I could have gotten a lot of money in damages!!

I mourn your loss

May the Emperor watch over the souls of your sacred texts and combatants lost in holy flame.

Continue playing dude, if you enjoy the hobby as much as I do then it's only a minor, if costly, set back. Take it as a fresh, if smokey, start. Is there an army that you thought 'hey, I would really like to play them but have space marines' if so, now's your chance.

Did they have contents Insurance, if they did then your contents should still be covered regardless of who's property it is. They were in possession of said items at the time of the fire.

Glad to hear that your family was safe as well as your kitties! I think a few books and plastic men is worth their safety.

Oh and keep playing Dawn of War dude, it's still awesomesauce!

Genuinely gutted to hear that (no pun intended).
Losing the 2nd ed stuff especially :(

I'd recommend taking a few weeks to mull things over and then simply weigh up how much you love the hobby to completey rebuild (time, money, effort etc).

No, I don't believe they have any sort of insurance (as they both have sub-par jobs)

And I have played both 1 & 2 but don't currently own either. I was asking if I should consider getting it. I kinda suck at strategy games but playing = improving
I'm pretty stoked for whenever dark millenium comes out. I will totally play this, and probably be as hooked to that as my bros were to wow

I had just about a bit of everything in my collection, although the ones above were ones that i had "armies" at a playable level. I had all sorts of figures just because i liked them, even ones dating as far back as my RT eldar
I think the new wave of shiny 5th edition codexes brings a lot more to the table in terms of power compared to old codexes. Anything new will be cried over as beardy cheese compared to anyone left with 4th edition codexes (or older)
So I will probably collect BA (i already have the dex) and probably CD (as they never really get outdated & again that's one of 3 dexes i was wise enough to take with me)
If i can convince my wife that she should play i may hold out for the GK dex and play as daemons. Would be a nice challenge to me as a gamer (since GK will trump CD any win will be miraculous for me!)

Well even though i lost all those books, I'm not sure that's enough to kill WH40K for me. As much as i loved the old fluff and pictures, i'll get over it (i think. i might always be left pining)
I spend thousands and thousands of dollars on models that never got assembled & never will as they are probably hunks of melted plastic
So Idk, as much as it sets me back, i have always found the spare cash (or scrimped out on eating / drinking) to pick up the plastic crack i'm apparently addicted to

As many have said it does give me an opportunity to start stuff i never got into since i was emotionally and financially invested in armies I already had at fighting strength
Seems like a good time to start dark eldar, perhaps!

I sure will miss my bitz box and all my classic minis.. So much dakka...

I never got into DoW2 I just think it lost it's appeal and what made the first incarnation great. I wasn't even tempted when Chaos Rising came out and I wub chaos. I still play a Dark Crusade from time to time and on occasion vanilla, which I still think is the best of them all. I would recommend you get a copy, should be fairly cheap now.

I'm genuinely sorry to hear that you lost it all, and especially sorry to hear about all the unbuilt models that never made it onto the gaming table/old codices.

Worry not brother, we shall see them again soon for when we meet the Emperor, they shall be there to join us for the final battle against the Enemy.

I hope you get back into it, and start throwing your money at Games Workshop again to fight the foe known as Communism, although it might be worth holding off until the Grey Knights release if you're interested in playing them....I know I certainly am.

Oh I sure will, believe me. Gk seems like a great place to go. I also like the thought of collecting daemons as a punching bag force. Nothing says stacked match like GK vs. Daemons! (stacked matches are great for newbies too ! keeps them winning & happy!)

Has anyone else had this disaster happen to them? Or am I uniquely unfortunate?

Damn man.. I feel so sorry for you! I would propably freak out.. That is just a total nightmare!

I am not sure if it is possible but if you have some pictures of your collections you could try posting them in some forum and try define real value of your collection with other members. Or if you know other local hobbyists you could try making some kind of statement to your insurance company. I mean miniatures are art.. Just like paintings and other art.. If 10k painting is destroyed in fire it is not like they are going to say in insurance company that "Hmm.. fabric 1$, oil paints 20$, couple of brushes 8$ and frame 10$. Now take this money and go and paint yourself a new one" So if you had some really nice and beautiful models I would at least try to get more than just retail price.

As far as replacing outdated codexes, try eBay or even Bartertown. Just make a post of what you're looking for. That said, it sucks to lose everything like that. Though at the very least you now have a great excuse to start a new army.

Did they have renter's insurance? I learned that lesson the hard way.

I stated a bunch of times, to my dismay, there was no insurance in place. which sucks mostly for them. They lost computers, gaming consoles, and really old magic cards.

BUT THE CATS ARE OKAY

Hey come to think of it, there were a handful of WHFB army books (i only really had them for the pictures, and the only models i had were a smattering of lizardmen and chaos marauders)
Think I should start up some fantasy? It seemed to me like the rules were more complex and games took longer... which i'm not stoked on having to teach the wife but we do have a baby on the way (haha too soon for 40k?)
There are NO GW retails in this country. So if I really want new models, I have to order online or go to another country.
Saving up and waiting for new armies is the only option :(

+1

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies.
