Lord Commander in a Plush Chair

I had something somewhat similar happen to me(although the loss of models was purely my own fault).
In the middle of 4th edition(well only about a year into it) I rage-quit 40k. At the time I had an entire Chapters worth of marines(2nd-3rd edition models) and vehicles, over 100 guardsmen w/several Russes, Basilisks, chimeras, and Sentinels, a little over 3,000 points of Tau, 2,000+ points in SW, 2,000+ points in nids, and a 2'X3'x18" box filled with assorted bits. I sold the lot(excepting an 1850 vanilla marine list brimming with assault cannons, the 4th ed BRB, and 4th ed SM codex; just in case) for about $150usd in new Warmachine models for my girlfriend at the time's menoth army. I no longer have that girlfriend nor any of the menoth models.
Then 5th edition came out. I gave it a few months before even glancing at the rules. Then Warmachine went to Prime 2.0; suddenly most of my units had extra models that I couldn't use(without trying to find blisters of troopers), Jacks became twice as important(and I played Khador), and my most common opponent's army(Cryx) lost every special rule that made them unique. Privateer press had turned the game from Red vs. Blue vs. White vs. Black into Shades of Gray vs Silver(The Elves received every special rule stripped from every other army). So back into 40k i went(GW cleaned up most of the bad rules and rules-issues that were in 4th). Now i have the same marines i had bolstered by the AoBR contents, A 1500 point IG Army, the beginnings of a SW army, and the Wife has 2,000 of Orks(plus a Stompa).
I have amassed all this while paying Child support, balancing rent, and more recently pursuing a disability claim.
The trick is as follows:
1) Decide on an army
2) Refine your list until you know exactly what you want
3) Purchase only what you need
4) If you need any bitz(say just a few items from a box, but not most of the box); check ebay or similar sites. Never buy a box for only a few bitz. If you can't use the models, don't get the box.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Hm, can't say I ever had a gf make off with any models.. Heck, I had a hard time even getting tham to paint
so far the only thing i had painted by a girl was a CSM with greenstuffed butterfly wings and a fairly cruddy purple/pink scheme.. go figure!
Thanks for the pointers. I probably won't get back into the habit of buying every new kit i see (when i lived close to a indie retailer I did this ALOT) and will probably just focus on completing two lists.
Hopefully the wife is keener on painting than my old gf!

I'd reccomend Bitz Barn. They seem to be alot cheaper than most bits stores, but they are often out of stock.
On ebay there's This guy, who seems to sell every bit imaginable. I've never ordered from him.

I'd recommend writing to GW with your story. You might move them and they might give you a "im sorry" present, you never know.
It would really help if you had some pictures from the fire though.
Anyway i am really sorry for your loss, I dont know what I would do if something like that would happen to me.

"Dear GW. Here's what thousands of dollars of burnt up plastic looks like!"
I've pretty much resigned myself to waiting for new codexes and buying more models then.
I love this hobby, and I don't see myself ever being able to give it up!
Also being on dakka is very inspiring. I love seeing freehand work on tanks ect and when i can afford it i will surely go for it myself!

Eh, I don't blame him for saying it. it's a nice thought
I'm kinda a couple thousand miles away from the scene of the disaster (overseas in a nother country)
so pictures are not available, and "pics or it didn't happen" is GW's likely response, if any.
I sure do miss my old codexes

Sorry to hear about the fire, goog to hear your bro + his cats escaped (9 lives? lol) I'd say decide what you fancy going for, BA's are pretty good and they have some funky models (and another on the way (NOT the stormraven lol)) and of course the GK's are looking pretty damn good. It sounds like you've got a pretty damn idea of all the fluff so you could take this as an oppurtunity to start a new army you've never thought about going for! Good luck

Once more down to the beach, dear friends, once more,
To drown our sorrows with our English beer!
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility;
But when the blast of alcohol blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger:
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood. |

Try and keep your head up. My Imperial army has come back twice as strong since the bulk of it was lost to the warp.
Ask yourself: What would the Emperor do?
Well that's simple, he'd continue sitting on his golden toilet!
Try looking on eBay for old codices and old models. There might be some. I'd say don't quit, just pick one army and go with that.

To build an army from scratch, the cheapest option is space marines.
Not only can you pick up the AoBR marine half for cheap, but due to their popularity, you will also find marines on ebay in abundance and for a lower price than most armies.
Plus, as an elite/MEQ army, you can have a far lower model count than most armies. Land Raiders, Termies, characters etc eat huge chunks of points.
Create your own chapter btw, so you can use any of the marine codices (codex marines, BA, SW, DA, BT) and not get caught out by codex creep.

You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood. |

Horrible, just horrible.. Don't give up! Just get back to building & painting and let that carry you for a bit!
As far as the insurance on your collections go (for anyone who has insurance or is thinking about getting it), you need to explain to your insurance agent, in great detail, what your collection consists of. Be prepared to take photos/video of ALL of it (this is to prove that you actually have/had the stuff in case of loss) & do not be surprised if they want you to take out a seperate policy, just to cover your gaming stuff. I know this from experience. I personally have 16 armies of 2500 to 10,000 points (somewhere in the neighborhood of 8,000+ minis with 90% or better painted), as well as all of the codex/rule books from RT through the present. My agent almost fell out of his chair when we sat down and figured replacement cost of the models/books alone.

Were the armies insured? If so, use the cash to start a new and unrelated army is what I guess I'd do... Automatically Appended Next Post: MeanGreenStompa wrote:To build an army from scratch, the cheapest option is space marines.

The DA Chapter Upgrade Sprue also means £12 tactical squads and tons of extra bitz to mess with.

Well to tell you the truth I had connections with a polish GW representative once. He told me that there was a simillar thing that happened (something with a hurricane or flooding, cant remember) and that GW did send a nice "sorry for your loss" package to cheer someone up. It wasn't much (2 boxes of tac marines + a tank or something like that and spare codices) but it was a nice touch.
Anyway you can always look up the old codices on ebay, they tend to go very cheap nowadays.

Maybe you can find the older codexes on ebay or half.com? I got a 2nd and 3rd edition chaos codex from there.
Sorry to hear about your loss. But look at it as an opportunity. You can rebuild your old armies, or try completely new ones.
