A simple question really, please only answer if you know for definite (that means no wild guesses you cheeky monkeys!)

"How much do the Imperial Fists deviate from the Codex Astartes, if at all?"

For e.g: I never saw an IF Vet with a white helm, nor an IF Sargeant with a Red Helm

Any other codex deviations or anything to suggest they are not yellow Ultramarines, please let me know

Cheers

Dorn initially opposed it (almost to the point of civil war), then the chapter became as obsessed as the Ultramarines in adopting it. Source is Index Astartes.

Dammit - between to the punch.

IA: Imperial Fists

Cleansed by their sacrifice, the Imperial Fists immediately began their reorganisation. For the next two decades they went into retreat, their successor Chapters taking to the field in their stead. Dorn used this time to retrain the Chapter to embrace all aspects of the Codex Astartes. When they later emerged, their adherence to the Codex was matched only by the Ultramarines.

Thanks for clearing that up guys, I'd read this but was a bit unsure. So i paint my sarges with red helms and my Vets/Termie's with white helms. Cheers

That doesn't mean that a chapter deviates from the codex, the codex (the actual book by guilliman) has multiple variations on the rank markings.

if it was a single standard, chapters of a particular colouring would be (how do you show a vet when you armour is all white), the rank colouring you are shown in the rule book are mainly designed with a marines armour being blue.

Oh, I know, I am totally aware of that, but my question was, are the Imperial Fists painted that way?

Do they have different coloured Helms, if not, how do the Fists mark themselves apart?

What is the Imperial Fist Variant? This is what I am trying to establish???

Someone has actually cleared this up for me recently. I had been confused with the use of white helms and red with white stipe helms myself.

In the 2nd ed. Codex, there is a page that shows the variation that Imperial Fists have for their veterans. The Veterans will have a red stripe and Vet. Sgt.'s will have the red stripe and the red skull badge.

I am debating whether to turn my sternguard helms from white to this. I may just reserve the white helm for a company champion just for the heck of it.

Hope this clears this up for a fellow Son of Dorn!

This here is probably my favorite Imperial Fists army I've ever sen painted. He has a few sergeants and veterans therein, and I think the way he does them, (red helm, and red while with white stripe) looks phenomenal.

Just paint red LAURELS on the helmet; that is shown in the codex as being an alternate method.

The only thing that bugs me in that photo is the bent muzzle on the bolter, second marine from the right.

Haven't you seen one of those before? They shoot round corners, you don't need a line of sight?

I don't really wanna black line these guys, so what colour do you think I should use as a shade? Bubonic Brown or is that too light? Scorched Brown?

Dark Flesh/Vermin Brown'll do nicely.

Or just apply an Ogryn Flesh wash over Bubonic Brown as your basecoat.

Maybe you should ask Perturabo. He has the best collection of Imperial Fists helmets/heads.

I've seen plenty of Imperial Fists sergeants painted up with red helmets, and I think they look quite nice!

My favorite picture is this one:
