One of my favorite aspects of Warhammer 40k is the Horus Heresy, 10,000 years ago all the baddest of bad guys were good guys. I've read all the Horus Heresy books and have the hardback Collected Visions, which is fantastic. I've wanted a Heresy army for a long time and am finally pulling the trigger. If you are doing a Heresy Era army, its got to be traitor. I was leaning Word Bearers for a while, like the dark gray armor and the fact the are the original heretics. I just couldn't get into painting gray. Just finished a Whitescars army so white isn't an option. That nixes World Eaters, Death Guard, and Luna Wolves. Don't like puke green so Sons of Horus are out. I like purple so I looked into Emperors Children. These are certainly the snobs of the Space Marines and I don't really like anything about them. Thing is I've never painted purple and found a combination I like so here we are. Im rambling, on to the project.

Im basing the army as much on the Collected Visions book as I can. All vehicles, speeders, and dreads are the old school Rogue Trader models, thank you ebay. Im making a Mechanicum team, it will "count as" something, probably a Devastator Squad. I have a ton of bits. A metric ton of bits. I can make 14 marines in Heresy era armor using plastics and some CSM bits with more to come. Only the elite units will have the chest eagle. That seems like something a group of elitists would do. The terminators will be the "Justerean" models in the book. Little plasticard and lots of luck. Not getting Forgeworld marines unless its absolutely necessary. I know we have an expensive hobby, but those are too much. Especially for an entire army. Having said that, I will be using Forgeworld Pre Heresy weapons and max mini jump packs. The bases will be tiles. The test mini has a light, sand color tile. I am using Hardcoat to simulate a polished surface. Im not sold on the color, but will see how it looks. The army will be an ill fated loyalist faction which was sent to Istvaan III. All together the army should have a Heresy Era feel. I don't want just another purple marine army.

As always, input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Looking good! I would like to see you find a way to get that Aquilla on their chest plates. The terminator looks very true to the time period. I am definitely going to follow this thread.

Note that the Emperor's children did not have the so-called Justaerin Terminators. Just to clear it up, Justaerin was a term used strictly for Falkus "Widowmaker" Kibre's Terminator squad from the Luna Wolves\Sons of Horus Legion. Also, the Aquila was the Emperor's Children's signature look bestowed then by The Emperor, beloved by all. So even their lowest battle-brother would have it on their chest. (Sorry, I can't help it. I'm a Horus Heresy fluff nut Disregard this is you're not going 100% fluff )

OT
Great job on the marine. The mix of parts is perfect and the purple is quite exceptional. Looking good, can't wait to see the finished army.

Actually since he said Heresy era that would mean the aquila was gone from their chest. As per the models, the shoulder pads are a little bit honestly. Look into the ones from Maxmini I believe as those would fit perfect.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Well he did say that he'd be doing the Loyalists on Istvaan III. Also, the first to remove the Aquila from his armor was their Primarch himself, Fulgrim, prior to the Dropsite Massacre on Istvaan V.

Thanks for the compliments and discussion guys. Granted the Collected Visions book is a little loose with its illustration titles, but there are Justaerin Terminator pictures in Emperor Children colors. Also many many pics where they do not wear the Aquilla. Thats the cool thing about the Heresy Era Legions, they were very powerful but appeared have no consistency in armor, weapons, or even equipment. I think the novels are the official history, though.

Got a little work done. I switched the base to a lighter tile. I read the novel a while ago, but I think the people on Istvaan III were pretty advanced and had a mystical looking city. Hence the grayish white tile. I may change up again. The leather pieces on the terminator broke while I was painting him, going to have to be more carefull. I think the marines are looking fairly Heresy Era. The Forgeworld weapons will really help out.

Like the look of the minis, and it's always nice to have an army with a story behind it! Just a small crit on the termie: The tassles on the shoulder look a bit weird being all straight; you can easily bend plasticard when heated (a hairdryer or a candle will do the trick); I feel it would add a nice touch to complete the model.

Another quick update on the first Predator, very WIP. And thanks for the advice on the plasticard, CommissarKhaine. The second sponson needed some work so I took it off. These Rogue Trader plastic/metal hybrids are a handful.

I almost finished the Predator, still no 2nd sponson. Still need to clean up a few stray brush strokes. There is a group shot and you can see how the models look together with the tile bases. I think its working out so far. The first 5 marines are also co plete, the Forgeworld weapons are just right. Im going to re-think how to make the terminators. Anyway....

Lookin good! And I agree the old minis can be hell.. I still have a 2nd ed. Pred (the one with the round turret) and I fondly remember the amount of cursing involved in putting it together... I always loved the old dozer blades though!

Rawr. Nice work. Must say I've never seen purple marines before (then again I don't know much about marines in the first place).

I always love seeing the FW parts that get used, too bad it is a pain to acquire the parts without jumping through hoops on my end.

I am hersey and prehersey fluff nut XD.
But yes Emperors Childern need their symbols almost everywhere. They are very well pretty chapter. They are always wearing full battle accomendations. So You need to load them with full honors, even during the hersey.

I have a bunch of Dark Angel stuff left over from a Fallen project which didnt go my way. Im thinking the wings can be converted to cooler Emperors Children symbols. Im holding off on tricking out the models until I set exactly how the entire army will look. All you guys are right, simply throwing purple on these guys doesn't make them E.C..

Sorry, but they kind of look like bathroom floor tile to me...they don't look bad but that's just what they remind me of.

For a person like me, a base needs to fill only a few criteria

1) If I put a ( topheavy mini name here ) on the base, will it tip over.
2) Will it interfere with other players due to shape change or whatever.
3) Is it going to break if I accidentily drop it.

Sorry I am no good judge of bases unless I have the mini in hand

Ugh, bathroom tile? Thats not very Astarte-ish. Ill have to take a look at it. Maybe the band could do with another color. Thanks, thats the kind of feedback I want.

So I made an alternate base color and am trying to decide between the two. First 5 members of the assault squad are done as is the first tactical squad leader and 2 objective markers. I put a few more touches on the 5 guys I already finished. Extreme highlighting, painted studs, and added the Emperors Children symbol to the left shoulder. I used the transfers from the CSM box. The 2 tactical squads will have the same armor, sternguard squad another style, assault squad a third. Its very bits intensive and Im hunting Ebay for more parts.

So here are the first sergeant and 5 assault marines. I think the look is just right. Given these are the survivors of the virus bomb, Im thinking about using some weathering powder to simulate burns and smoke stains. That may be far down the road, lots more to model and paint.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the compliments. The vast majority of the army will be E.C., but Im thinking adding a small squad of Luna Wolves using the original color scheme. Kinda reinforcing the idea of a band of survivors getting together to fight. Im thinking of writing a story too.
