There is another debate on the topic here (and no doubt in other places, but this was the first result from my search), but rather than resurrect a two-year-old thread I thought I'd start a new topic on it

The question is simple: can Feel No Pain be used to ignore a Gets Hot! wound that is from an AP1 or AP2 weapon? Consensus here and on other forums seems to be a "yes", but I'm not so sure.

I specifically want to be sure for my IG, so I might save a few bodies from certain plasma death in my CCS.

Here are the relevant rules quotes:

Rulebook, p31 wrote:Gets Hot!
(...) For each result of a 1 rolled on its to hit rolls [when firing a Gets Hot! weapon], the firing model suffers a wound (normal saves apply).

Rulebook, p75 wrote:Feel No Pain
(...) [Feel No Pain] cannot be used against wounds from weapons that inflict instant death...Neither can it be used against wounds from AP1 and AP2 weapons, [etc].

So, if you roll a 1 when shooting a plasma gun, the Gets Hot! rule is triggered and the model suffers a wound. The model suffers this wound as a direct result of firing an AP2 weapon, thus it could be said that the model has suffered a wound from an AP2 weapon (although in this case is specifically allowed an armour save). It doesn't matter that the wound itself wasn't AP2, only that the wound was caused by a weapon that is also AP2 (and, in the case of a Guardsman, also causes instant death).

On the other hand, it could also be said that the Gets Hot! wound is one simply being suffered by a special rule, rather than by the weapon itself. It's sort of like saying that if you eat a sandwich, a dog will bark - the sandwich wasn't the one that barked, it just caused the dog to do so.

Thoughts?

I forget were it says this in the BRB, but the gets hot special rule says that the model suffers a wound and normal saves apply. This implies you are not restricted in what saves you can take, IE it doesn't ignore any saves.

Since the wound is caused by something that doesn't ignore saves, and that the weapon used technically doesn't matter, only the rule, then you get an armor save/invun save and feel no pain for the model, when applicable.

You don't suffer a wound from the plasma gun (else you wouldn't get to take an armour save). You suffer a wound from the Gets Hot! rule which has no specified AP and therefore does not ignore FNP.

Your second bit is correct. The wound comes from Gets Hot!, not the weapon itself, so Feel No Pain is not violated.

In other words, the Gets Hot! wound is not an AP1 or AP2 wound.

Gets hot! just auto-wounds you. No Ap, no strength.

It's an interesting argument.

But, I'm going to go with you do get FnP save.

From a strict RAW standpoint, Gets Hot! is causing the wound, not the plasma weapon. Just like No Retreat! wounds aren't caused by the attacking models.

From a more RAI standpoint, Gets Hot! wounds allow an armor save, therefor they would allow a FnP save.

It's not a shot from an AP2 weapon, it's Get's Hot.

When I first started playing again after a hiatus for a good couple of eds I had the same question.

I read it that as the Plasma Gun was AP 2 and the thing exploding then there would be no save for my Chaos guys as they only had a 3+ armour save.

But as the above posters have said, it's not the plasma gun but Gets Hot that you are making the save for.
