As part of my new year's reflections on the past I decided to start cutting into the unpainted figs I have piled up in my garage. I decided to paint these figs not related to any army project in between the longer projects, with aim to try new things and get my painting speed up.
First mini painted is the Ostlander handgunner. The Ostlander is a old fig I bought when the 7th Edition of Fantasy Battle came out with plans to paint a army to the colors of Ostland. I just couldn't get the scheme working. A while ago in GW's site had a tale of four gamers where one was using this scheme to paint the troops and I decided to try it for this fig. I tried to paint him in decent time and not get stuck on details, which I succeeded in doing.

Thanks!
I hope I can keep this project up and going, so far it's been working well it's 14th of Jan and I haven't yet touched my army projects this year . Next up is Blood Angel Librarian or Ork Big Mek, which has been WiP almost 3 years now I think. Time to finish that one.

On another forum people started a challenge of getting 600 points of warhammer fantasy painted during 3 months. I decided to participate with my unpainted Empire, I have couple of boxes of them that I bought in the early days of 7th edition. First figs to have the pleasure of participating in the challenge are these handgunners. They are from the same set as the first fig, I guess they are from 4th or 5th edition starter set originally. Age is starting to show on these figs, but they look decent painted up. Same scheme as the handgunner in the first post, these just have less layers of highlight applied.
Next I'm going to paint warpriest along with 10 crossbowmen.

These are nice change in pace as I'm trying to get to army painting mode for the first time in over 5 years. I have been playing Warmachine, Hordes and Confrontation these past years and have not painted whole units of figs at a time since I painted my 40k armies during 3rd edition and WHFB orcs and Khemri during 6th. It has been a bit hard to let go of individual figs and concentrate on units instead. I hope I can keep this up at least for the coming couple of months, I still have units of crossbows, swords and greatswords along with couple of heroes. Anyway these are nice diversion from the Skorne I'm painting as they are painted to much higher standard and those figs have more detail to paint.

Thanks Ambull, the bases are pretty basic as I'm not going to spend too much time on them for the whole army. They are just drybrushed with lighter browns until the static grass was applied. After the static grass the whole base along with the grass was drybrushed with bone to tie it all together. Drybrushing makes the grass look more natural and down to earth and at the same time adds a element to tie the base together.

Thanks bunny, I tried something new with the cape. I have avoided painting yellow for a long time, but now I found a great way of painting it without having to paint multiple coats so I'm going to have a lot more of yellow in the future.
Mister Feral wrote:Ooh I dig, both the Warrior Priest and the classic handgunners.

Thanks!
The yellow is primed with iyanden dark sun, that's such a great way to get solid base coat for yellow. The base color is scrofolous brown from vallejo game line, washed with ogryn flesh and then highlighted with scrofolous mixed with bone going to pure bone in extreme highlights.
Melkhiordarkblade wrote:Well the purple is nice, you don't see colour like that often.
I have been using purple for long time, my first actual 40k army was purple chaos. At the moment I'm also painting purple Skorne and it seems to be my favorite color as a lot of time I seem to go back to purple and bone scheme.

Next up on my random painted figs are these dark eldar wyches. I fell in love with the new dark eldar concepts and when I visited the local store on December these wanted to come home with me. I was aiming for something a lot lighter than the usual, wasps was the work title of these figs. A lot of the DE figs on the net are too dark and the detail is not visible on those figs. These were the first on my yellow phase, the primer on these is also Iyanden dark sun, which is my new favorite base color. You can get so nice and vibrant colors on top of it.
I painted the bunch already on January, but got the bases done last week. I played around with flesh colors again with these, the two pale ones were not so successful, but on the whole scheme is pretty good looking.

I finally got started on my Malifaux resurrectionists. I bought these figs when the main rulebook came out, but didn't have the inspiration to start painting them until now. These figs will be painted in more bright colors than is usual for me, as I think it will fit the style of the scuplts and I get to push myself into new directions with them.
The crew I have started with is the morgue crew of resurrectionist and first up is the master Dr McMourning. I went fit scheme pretty close to the studio one, I plan on keeping the turqoise as the color to draw the crew together so every member will have some of it. Here he is with base coat on, I have already started on the shading so it will not look as bright in the next update.
As allways comments and critic are welcome.

Here are the pics of the finished coroner McMourning. He had some blood added to the apron and gloves with inks and Tamiya Clear red to get more character. He was nice and characterful figure to paint, once I got the scheme sorted out I finished the figure quite fast. The base is made by Microart, it is from their Cobblestone line. All of my Resurrectionists will be mounted on those bases.
Next up are the zombie dog totem for the doctor and his faithful assistant Sebastian.

New month and another mini done, this is another for my Morgue crew the Zombie Chihuahua totem for the Doctor. The figure is really small, but has a lot of detail from missing skin and tissue to fur and teeth. A lot of fun to paint, even if I had to squint at it from time to time to make out the details. It has some purple and green glazes added on top of the fur color to suggest some decay and the wound have some blood effects added to give more organic look. Overall a nice change of pace.
This last picture is just to give you idea on the scale of the dog. Here he is next to his Master, awaiting to fetch a piece of flesh that someone has carelessly discarded.
Comments and critique are welcome

To continue on the random nature of this paint log I bring you the first painted terminator from the Space Hulk - Brother Omnio. I got to play the first couple of games of Hulk during the summer and immediately was motivated to paint one of the terminators. They really are the best marine figs made by GW, the detail is excellent and crisp. That is also a factor to take into account when painting, I got the basic armor done in no time, but the painting just dragged on as the detail needed to be done. There is bit of danger in going over board with color on the detail and I tried to keep it tight and number of different colors down to keep him from looking like decorated cake.
There are couple of experiments in the colors with the red armor and gold, in both to get good contrast with minimal effort. The red is based on the foundation red and it lacks some depth because of that, but I think I will not go over it with inks. I have another one already waiting on the table for his turn and the plan is to slowly paint all of the terminator to similar level as this first one during the coming winter.
Click on the image for full sized in the gallery and tell me what you think.

I got this pair of Mantic ghouls as a promo for free about a year ago and I have been thinking about painting them since. They are really nice looking figs with lots of detail and nice proportions. I needed to try my idea of how to paint dead flesh on something before going forward with my Maelstrom undead and then I remembered these two fellows who fit the job really well.
The skin is painted with GW deneb stone and then highlighted with white added to the deneb stone. Then the skin was glazed with several coats of brown, chestnut and purple inks. This gives nice color to the skin and I will be using the same method with my other undead flesh. The clothes were painted with little attention to the colors as I just wanted to finish these two. The bases are painted with pigment washes, another first try. It worked better on the green clothed ghoul, I definitely still need to practice some with the pigments to get the results I like.

Nice looking stuff here.
The Ghouls are look great. I would maybe add few bloody details of wounds and scabs with dark reds and browns just to break the quite dominant pale flesh a bit.

Thanks Northen. That is the plan, I'll add some blood to the cuts and arms and post new pics then. I just had to varnish then before adding the blood with inks, as they were quite shiny after the ink washes.
I am quite torn about starting a KoW army of undead after painting these, they are such nice figs and quite fast to paint too, but have to resist that urge I have enough on my desk as is

Another shot of the Mantic Ghouls, this with more blood. So like Northen suggested I went back to them and added a bit of blood with old GW inks and Tamiya clear red. The blood was added to the wounds on the bodies, to the mouths and to the claws as I thought those places would gather most of the red. The picture is a bit dark, but from the one in Dakka Gallery you can zoom in to see the gore.

Thanks, they work better now with blood than without. The red shirt is as you say not a good idea with these figs. These were painted as test figures for a possible undead army and the green works much better than the red. Even though I think that the green is too bright and final army should have darker green if I ever get to that project
I have started a Ork Stormboy to try out the weathering and chipping techniques we discussed in your SW thread, he should have nice areas for dirtying and chipping and it will work with the nature of the fig too. Hope to have early wip pictures soon.
