Ok folks, heres what Ive got going on. Im looking to get back into scale armor modeling a little bit, but I want tanks I can display with my 28mm minis and be pretty close in scale. Most of my 28mm minis are 40k, warmachine, and at-43 (red blok). I may add some Dust Tactics walker eventually.

Heres the problem...28mm is about 1/60 scale, or 1 inch = 5 feet. That leaves it dead between 1/48 (4ft/inch) and 1/72 (6ft/inch).

Heres the breakdown:

1/48...
very small selection of kits
over size for 28mm, would make "heroic" 28mm minis look closer to true scale

1/72...
huge selection of kits
under scale for 28mm, would make "heroic" minis look even larger.

So what do you folks think would be the better way to go?

Most people advise 1:48 or even 1:32 for 28mm models. I know that some more advanced modelers use 1:32 scale accessories for their tanks.

I have a couple 1:35 tanks already, it used to be my preferred scale for armor. They are WAY too big. A Space Marine barely comes up to the top of the tracks on my Tiger I. Another way to demonstrate...a SM is about shoulder height to a 1:35 WWII German tank crew member. They are good for conversions for large tanks for IG and such, but I wanted something that would look like it was close to the proper scale.

Might have to hit ebay and find a cheapie in each scale and test it out in person...

1/48 fits best with 40k, 1/72 is way to small

+1 on 1/48 scale, but most rael life tanks are longer, and more narrow than 40 equivalents. Check out this article here on dakka http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Scale_Model_Kits_for_40K

Here is a picture of scale comparison;

In the background is a 1/35 scale humvee, then let to right in front is a 1/35 figure, 1/48, space marine, IG. I think that 40k armor is closer to 1/48 than 1/35, Tamyia has a pretty extensive line of 1/48 armor, I would look into them.

It does seem 1/48 is the way to go.

seriously 1/72 is WAY too small for warhammer. im pretty sure that they are all set on a 28mm scale but 1:72 is litteraly half the size of everything gw makes

1/72 is closer to 20mm.

1/48 is about as close as it gets for conventional kits (and has been an established scale for model kits longer than GW have been around *).

1/32 is an AIRCRAFT scale. Most ground-pounder stuff is 1/35. Helicopters are considered "ground" vehicles because they are used by ground forces (it's an old issue). 1/32 or 1/35 is way too large for 40k.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Exactly, and 1/35 is almost double the size. Thats why Im going with 1/48. Although it doesnt have the selection that the others do it will all fit better.

Another thing that supports 1/48...Dust Tactics chose 1/48 as the scale for their higher detail kits, as it allows them to have a common modeler scale but also lets them fit in with the 28mm game pieces.

Thanks to all for the opinions & info.
