So, some buddies came over to my pad to try out the new Deathwing tonight. The Deathwing are legit from our first two test games against a hard Chaos tournament list. I have to rush so this report will be quick and dirty.

Deathwing:

Belial
Termies x 6: L.Claw x 1, TH/SS x 4, Cyclone
One squad has apoth and banner

Chaos

Nurgle Warptime Prince x 2
GD
PMs x 3: Rhino, melta x 2, c.melta, fist
Oblits x 8

First game was Seize ground, spearhead with 3 objectives. The Deathwing player rolled incredibly poorly, like insane amount of 1s and 2s. He was able to take down the princes and GD in combat, but was bleeding out termies too rapidly to attrition and ended up losing 2 objectives to 1.

Game 2 I took them for a spin and we rolled up capture and control, spearhead. I sat one squad on the my objective and bum rushed his with everything else. We had a huge melee in the center and the Termies walked through everything, nearly tabling the Chaos player. I ended up winning 1 to 0.

Thoughts:

The army is very tough, but very one dimensional. You walk forward and shoot missiles until you get into charge range. It is damn good at shooting and assault though, and apart form bugs and Demons you can outfight you in combat, there isn't much to worry about. The army is a bit straight forward. You just walk forward and shoot. A squad of ravenwing would add so much to this list for deployment options. I would say at least one squad or bikers would be clutch. A libby is a must too, as lash would own this army.

It is legit though. I want to try it against IG, Wolves and BA to really get a feel for its tournament worth. A little spice though and this thing will crush most people. Missile wolves I think will really struggle with it.

I feel after this brief test run, that BTs will be tougher, but that remains to be seen. I have to say though, that this would be a cool second army as it is so easy to play, paint and cheapish to buy. Definitely going to give it some more test runs, but it certainly has potential with a few more units tossed in to give it greater flexibility.

Lol...that's more assault termies than my Ravenguards. Of course I didn't bring my 30 assault termies with me, but that would make for a funny match. Just watch out for Land Raider spam though. Lol.

Yeah, I've come to the conclusion looking at it that I wouldn't want to play terminators only as that does tend to make the game one dimensional. Adding in some speeders and dreads changes things up a bit. Also possibly bikers. Though Ard Boyz will be hilarious if someone runs 9 squads of termies

Sidenote but why didn't you take advantange of DW assault? You could have had 2 squads in a better position than just standard deployment? (to be fair I need to re-read this rule but the codex is half a country away )

Deathwing assault allows you to DS half your terminators rounded up first turn of the game. (basically like daemons, but you always get what you want in first wave)

I was thinking the samething though if you guys didnt use the Deathwing assault rule. But then again you said it was a fast battle rep. so maybe you did?

With the objectives where they were it didn't need to happen. I just walked them right onto the objectives and crushed the Chaos army in HtH.

Could have done that though, for sure, not a bad idea. It was the first game, too. We were just trying the ideas out.

This battle report confirms my thoughts about the new Deathwing. They got a lot stronger.

Big time! They are very, very good now, easily top tier. They are just really one-dimensional. Mixing in some Ravenwing and Ven Dreads will make the army not only more flexible but more fun to play.
