Been playing a lot of 1k games and I just do not know how to gear my Heroes.

COre
WoC MoN halberds Full Cmnd 300 (w shields 315)
Marauder Horsemen x5 musician Flaits or T. Axes 81
Special
Chaos KNights x5 Full CMnd 250
Rare Giant 225

HEroes
With this army Im not sure if I should play a Exalted Hero or Sorc. I play against a lot of opponents with magic. But since winds of magic is random I still generate dispel dice. After miscating with my sorc. I really dont like casting 18+ cast spells with level 2 wizards. Out of handfull of games my only sorc that did anything was curse of the leeper on questing knights and turn 3 boom. it was fun but I cant count on that every game.

So i thought about a lone Hero riding a mount around the map killing stuff. While my units did most of the dmg.

QUestion: How should i fill my 250 points on my heroes/lord slot for a 1k game?

You could but i personally would rather have more bodies on the table.

I would look at a lvl 2 MoN caster - who says you need to be casting all the big spells. Pick a few utility spells and go at it.

I kind of like the idea of an Exalted on a demonic mount with a flail and shield. Maybe toss on a ward save (MoT or the chaos armor that does that) and a helm of many eyes if you have space. It is a really cheap hero that swings at Str7 first round of combat and has a bunch of str 5 attacks otherwise and is hard to kill with the knights. Use the extra points to plop another knight in though, since you need 5 rank and file for LOS rolls.

Magic wise, a level two isn't bad at all, and can hold his own against a lot of the combat heroes of other races with some minor survival gear. Plus, the WoC spells all have low casting costs, so it isn't too hard to toss out 2 spells a turn even with iffy winds rolls. Take a level 2 with MoT and third eye and steal the opponents fun spells too.

Generally though, I would recommend keeping it pretty cheap too; as Casper said, more bodies is often a very nice thing. WoC have some great characters right out of the box though, and the exalted's ability to take a flail or a halberd dirt cheap (or just Str5 sword and board) makes him kind of a monster.

I've taken MoN LvL 2 sorc almost all my games except 2 (gotten a loss in those games). The two I have tried a EH and he just didnt perform well. I feel that WoC units are so good in combat that the heroes are shadowed and I find little reason to gear up a Exalted when I can bring more bodies and do better in combat res. I just like to add little personalty to my army with a badass hero that kills all. I just cant seem to justify spending 250 points when I could get another unit of units or chossen or block of warriors.

Ill try out a cheap exalted hero on a demonic mount, I can use the jugger model right? same base? And squeeze a lvl 2 sorc if i can.

You know, a totally rusted up juggernaught, covered in nurglings would make a bitchen nurgle sorcerer mount.

+1 on the not needing tooled up heroes.
A survivable wizard is great; the rank and file do more than enough damage.

Yea, turns out ALL Chaos mounts other than the basic "I'm a Hores" take the 50x50 base. Kind of weird, but easy for modeling purposes. They also all at least cause Fear, which is cool.

While we are thinking of it, has anyone tried an EH on a palanquin of Nurgle? I believe he retains infantry status, and gets 6 Str3 (or 2?) poison attacks. That gives him a pretty horrific number of attacks for chewing through ranks and such, and poison is mean in general.

if you want reliable magic WoC is full of great items take the Power Familiar and the Tome of Secrets make a nice combo for a level 2 Chaos Sorcerer, combine that with a mark of Tzeentch and what you get is a 3 spell caster with one of those being from a bonus lore, with a +3 to cast, 2 extra power dice, and a mitigated miscast, all for 190 points, the only real drawback being that the lore of Mr. T can be more unpredicable than others and the Mark forces you to take it aside from your Book Bonus Spell.
Or you can drop the mark of Tzeentch which will lose him the +1 to cast, but you can take any lore you want with the other benefits, and Fire or Death Lore can be an especialy scary option in an army that most enemies are scared to get close to.

A Cascading Fire Cloak or Flaming sword of Rhuin on an already frightening bunch of warriors? A spectacular Fiireball or Firestorm on any mass of enemies not dwarf tough=good. A Purple Sun melting a low Initiative unit of Temple Guard, Ironbreakers, or an Anvil of Doom? Awsome. A single successfull Treason of Tzeench on high Elf Swordmasters or White Lions, Empire Greatswords, Executioners or generaly any unit capable of dishing out more than it can take? Priceless!

In Warriors o Chaos magic will rarely win you the game, but it Can win you the game, and more importantly provides a rare tactical flexibility in what most folks consider the "Direct Approach" army. Your A game Close Combat will always be solid, but bringing another threat to the table can make you that much more prepared. Then again you can be like my Friend and bring a 500 point Slaan (Lizardmen) to the table decked out for crazy magic phases where he can basicaly double his spell dice... and like him whiff out, fail, and interupt casting on every spell in a row for 5 games strait. Though i don't think anyone can roll as badly as he does.

Infreak where does it say that? Not in my WoC book. Is it Errata?

Book states:

Book of Secrets - 25 points - Enchanted Item
May not be taken by models with the Mark of Khorne.
book of Secrets contains many dark truths, but all too often the
price of such knowledge is life itself.

The bearer knows a random spell from the Lore of Fire, Shadow, or
Death, (player's choice) and generates a single extra Power Dice, though
he does not generate extra Dispell Dice. If the bearer ever miscasts roll
1 D6+1 instead of 2 D6 on the miscast table.

Doesnt't say anything about losing wizard levels or any functions of a Wizard's normal casting ability.

I ran a level 2 death sorc, and he won me the game by killing TK high priest . Talk about cost effective.

Change to “Treat the bearer as a Level 1 Wizard, who may use
the Lore of Fire, Lore of Shadow or Lore of Death. He may
not attempt to channel. If he ever casts a spell with irresistible
force he must roll D6+1 rather than 2D6 on the Miscast
table.”
