Hello,

I just started playing Chaos space marines and I need some help picking out some more units. I have 30 chaos space marines, 1 chaos lord, one defiler and 2 Obliterator. So... What is good for a chaos space marines army? I was thinking a Daemon Prince and some spawns??

Thanks for your help!!

Well, a few transports and less emoticons would probably help.

And don't listen to people who tell you that you need like, 6-9 oblits in an army, they're idiots. 2-3 should do fine for now.

Tombworld El'Lahaun 2500pts
Hive Fleet Vestis 5000pts
Disciples of Caliban 2000pts
Crimson Fist 2000pts
World Eaters 1850pts
Angels Encarmine 1850pts
Iron Hospitalers 1850 pts (Black Templar Successor)
Sons of Medusa 1850pts
Tartarus IXth Renegade Legion 2500pts

No spawn. Chaos fast attack is a slot that should never be used.

You will need rhinos and daemon princes. Forget the lord, ask youself what a lord can do that a DP can't do better for less.

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

Mecer linked me to these posts (I believe he wrote them) an excellent write-up on how to choose your CSM.

Daemon princes are definitly worth it , maybe try a few berzerkers 2 dice each 3 on the charge ! . oh and dont forget the skull champion 3 dice plus 4 on the charge

Try telling that to the noise marines , They'll rip you apart with em'

Out of my mind, back in 5 minutes.

Not a bad start there. I would recommend using 2 defilers as they get much more dangerous in pairs. 16 lesser daemons in one unit is overkill, I would split them up into 10 and 5 or three 5s. Having 14 marines in one squad is also overkill. The typically accepted number is 10 so you can get 2 special weapons and still fit in a rhino. The greater daemon will be much more effective if your champions are in rhinos so they can get closer to the enemy. The greater daemon is really slow once it shows up so you want him to be as close to the enemy as possible before he comes in. Speaking of special weapons, you should use some. Basic bolters are good but you really want something with a little more punch. The prince is really begging for a mark of Nurgle. Going from toughness 5 to 6 is a huge improvement. You will take half as many wounds from S4 weapons. Berzerkers are also very deadly. They actually have 3 attacks each with 4 on the charge because they use a CC weapon plus a pistol, giving them an extra attack.

You can toy around with these ideas and fiddle with your list if you want. You can save some points to make changes by reducing the squad sizes, reducing the oblit squad to 2 members, and maybe even taking out the greater daemon if you are foot slogging. Just some suggestions to help you think about your list and learn a little bit. Welcome to the awesome side of futuristic superhuman marines.

Terminators with mark of khorne and Khorne Bezerkers,
I never leave home without my 2 squads of 5 terminators and terminator lord with lightning claws and mark of khorne.

I'd have to disagree with Chaosheade on the Defilers. I always use two or three, but they've never made their points back. In fact they always get blown in the opening rounds. Too big of a target, too much of a point sink, and too low armor. They look good on paper, but their BS 3 kills any potential use for their battle cannon. They also dont do much in terms of close combat due to their (relatively) low number of attacks. Vindicators perform their long ranged job much better (higher BS, strength and AP).

Core troop choices are pretty much Zerkers or plague Marines. Normal CSM are only there if you need bodies for something, and the other two cult troopers do have uses, but not as universal as zerkers and Plaguies. Each Zerker, on the charge, is the same as a Dark Angels Company Commander in terms of number and the quality of attacks dished out, as well as doing it at a higher strength.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Actually I agree with you MechaEmperor, I just didn't clarify enough. I meant to say take 2 or none at all. I played around with them and I love the model but they just aren't very effective at much of anything besides drawing fire and blowing up. But they are just so awesome you can't help but want to field 3... or more...

Your list has some good things in it, but for the most part it would get wrecked against a good player. I am going to try and help you with this.

1. For me, Daemon Princes have only 2 competative builds. Wings, Slaansesh, Lash. Or Wings, Nurgle Warptime. I prefer the latter but it's up to you.
2. Terminators are best used for termicide. It consists of 3 termis with 3 combi meltas deepstiking behind a vehicle to kill it.
3. Chosen can be used for a similar purpose. Give them meltas and a rhino for anti tank, or plasma guns for anti infantry your choice.
4. Those are the only decent elite choices in the chaos book. Dreadnought can kill your own army, and possessed are overpriced.
5. CSM, Berzerkers, and PMs are the best troops. Plague marines for holding objects, my favorite number is 7 for them. Berzerkers to kill almost anything that doesnt have a bunch of PWs, my favorite number for them is 8. And CSM for a mix of the two, take 10 with 2 meltas a fist champ and IoCG. IMO plagues are the mest though.
6. Rhinos. Anything that can, should take a rhino. Rhinos dont need upgrades, unless you literally have NOTHING better to spend the points on.
7. Chaos Fast attack= trash, always.
8. Every HS in the chaos book has a use. My favorites are a pair of defilers with 3 oblts, or just 9 oblits.
9. Stay away from the landraider unless in games of 2000+
10.Lesser Daemons are OK for holding objectives and combat support, Greater Daemons can be great if used correctly also.
11. In general, CSM SCs are overpriced. Abaddon is good in 2000+ though, as long as he has a landraider.
12. If you dont have a DP, you may be able to get by with a Lord with a Bloodfeeder. But your probably better off proxying him.

This is what ive gathered over the years, Hope this helps!

Rod.
