As far as I can find in the rulebook, all it says about a character that refuses a challenge and gets sent to the back is that he moves out of base to base contact with all enemies and he can't attack, plus the unit can't use his leadership. This leaves open a couple of questions:
1) Magic items, such as the Crown of Command, Rapturous Standard, or other items. This mainly relates to items that affect the unit's performance in combat.
2) Special rules, such as hatred from a warrior priest or Fear/Terror immunity from a dwarf lord to hammerers.
I think RAW they should get them, as I find nothing to indicate that they should not, and these items and rules mainly have language like "... and any unit he joins..." What do you guys think?

Personally, I would play that you lose any benefits from any items/special rules that the character has, but I have no basis for this interpretation of the rules.

Previously you lost the benefit of everything and everything, but that is no longer the case.

On point #2, you'd take the fear/terror test before the lord refused the challenge, so that wouldn't apply.
But, I see what you are getting at.

all that happens is that the Character sent to the back can't be in BtB with any enemies and you can't use his Leadership for that round.
if for some reason he can still make supporting attacks from his position he is allowed to do so.
a Horde of Ogres 3 ranks deep would allow a character to still attack with up to 3 supporting attacks even if he refused the challange(a silly example as no ogres ever refuses a challange, but still...)

Grey Templar: intresting, i hadent thought of it like that.
so here is a question then. if a character on mount refuses a challenge if hes in a unit of say empire spearmen, is he placed to the rear? what if hes riding a monterous infantry model?

Actually the rule says, and i quote, "The retiring character slinks off to the back ranks and is not allowed to attack this round...", so no smacking people with your tyrant after he wusses out.

Kinda related. If a character accepts then dies, does a model move up in his place? I7 lord kills Hero. I5 combat DE step up and fill the spot.. I called bs but.. i was tableing the guy... so just let him take extra attack.

He's dead so a RnF steps up to take his spot, your lord still can't be attacked tho as he counts as being in a challenge for the duration of that round of combat.

yes, a guy steps up to fill the gap, but no one may attack the character that finished the challange.
