Yeah, I know this is the internet and no one is ever supposed to be convinced by anyone else of anything. BUT Has internet discussion ever made you change your mind about a game? Or, if not, has a friend ever convinced you take another look at a game you thought was horrible? In my case, I hated Morrowind when I first bought it. A friend started to play and I started to see the story open up and got completely hooked. To think, if he'd never picked it up I would have totally missed it -- and probably also given Oblivion and FO3 a pass. I shudder to think . . . After reading a lot of stuff on Dragon Age: Origins here on Dakka, I decided to give that game another shot as well. I had previously gotten it for 360 at release and been totally disappointed. All thoughtful, positive comments on Dakka motivated me to try it again (this time on PS3) and unfortunately I didn't like it any better then (probably less). But, even so, I did end up at least trying it again. Similarly, I grew up idolizing FFVII and then, reading about it online, found a lot of negative opinions of it among people a bit older than me. (For any who really want goo reading, try and find Kilkrazy's comments on the FF series. It's somewhere on Dakka.) Their comments have made me realize that a lot of what blew me away was neither unique to that game or even to the FF series. It just happened to be the first in-depth RPG video game I ever played. How about you guys?

Well, when I was looking into FO:NV, I read a lot about how bad the game was. I still bought it, and I am enjoying it. Just buy it, and if it doesn't 'taste' good, just head back to the shop for a refund. Don't let others convince you into buying a game or not.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Personally I hated Morrowind when it first came out but it has somewhere along the line become a "true" classic. Heck I can even watch videos where people actually beat it.
Lots of RPGs seem dull at first and sort of grow on you later. I actually just picked up and played normal Fallout 3 for a couple of days after finding it tiresome the first time. Now I went ahead and made sure my second character had solid combat skills mind instead of being a spastic freak.
But yeah lots of RPGs can seem dull or maybe the better expression is "one dimensional" and then you pick it up later or start thinking about it and are like, "man that is a cool game."

I couldn't stand to play BG, BG2, Planescape: Torment, and NWN the first time I tried to play them. I eventually sucked up it and got through them and ended up liking the BG series and NWN (which has awesome premium modules), but I still don't care much for Planescape. BG and BG2 aren't games I would play through again, the graphics (not the quality, but the design of the game) and gameplay are still frustrating despite the game's good story.
I liked Oblivion when I first played it, but after about 20 hours I realized that this game wasn't going to come close to Morrowind. Shivering Isles improved my opinion of it, but I still don't hold in the same regard I originally did.

See, I don't really like that. If a game's amazing for you then its amazing for you. There doesn't need to be excuses. Hate it when people say so-and-so did it before? So what? Everything has been done before. Video Games are a medium that a lot of concepts get recycled but y'know usually there's improvement each time.

Fable. I bought it reading all these reviews knowing it was just going to be the tits. Then I beat the game with a halo + Demon horns. I changed my mind rather fast on that pile of junk. And never again will I play one, and havnt since, what are they on like 3 or 4 now?

Metorid Prime Echoes first time I played it was awesome. Then I felt gipped at the end as i got everything, And I mean everything all the upgrades all the scans, armor. ETC. I was pissed at the end. and from reading the internet. Crackdown 2 made it look like a super l33t awesome game. When it was kinda disappoint. Also Starcraft 2. it made it look bad. And Then it blew my mind when i played it. Also Metorid Prime the Other M the internet sided with it. and it made me think they are just supporting the franchise just because and no actual legitimate information.

I found your problem. You keep trying to play a PC game on a console. The PC version is heads above the console version. This is the root of many arguments about the DA:O. So many people play it on consoles and that version is GAK! Its missing over half the content for animation/textures/audio/sound, the game controls are horrible on a controller, the camera system blows on the consoles, etc.
Do not play DA:O unless you get the PC version.
However, I hear they are fixing all these issues for the second game. They are completely changing the game play to fit the consoles instead this time around. So I will not likely buy the second game. They are turning it into a console hack and slash it seems, in an attempt to get more sales on the consoles. To bad.

I have played many games simply because I heard of them often enough--much like books.
It has only enriched my gaming experience. Planescape:Torment, ChronoTrigger, Skies of Arcadia: Legends, Knights of the Old Republic, Katamari Damaci, LittleBigPlanet, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Ultima Online, Fallout 3, Red Dead Redemption, and more are examples of games that I can only say that playing has been a good thing I would have otherwise overlooked.
(I also liked DA:O, but can really understand many of the gripes)

DA:O suffers from repetitive and boring combat in addition to several tedious areas (Mage Tower and Deep roads being the worst imo).

A lot of RPGs end out like this, then again once console players find out that the game is not hack and slash they lose interest, unfortunately when games go to the mindless "press 1 button" hack and slash, all the caster types get left behind to get utterly destroyed.
I liked NWN and was hoping DA was going to be at least somewhat similar, but I guess I will stick to slow games that work and do not just give the entire game to the guy who can swing a sword really good.

Well I thought about changing my mind on Demon's Souls. I am on Prozac now so I might be able to handle it without wanting the destroy the disc. I told a friend at my local gamestop about my issues with the game and he said he played it again as well. The game still pissed him off the majority of the time but he did finish it. I really don't care for grinding/loot games so he advised me against it.
I guess that's why i like Dragon's Age more than other people. The dialog and character interaction are appealing to me than grinding and loot.
So what is everyone's problem regarding Final Fantasy 7 anyways? I played it when it first came out and loved every minute of it. Back in my day we didn't have youtube, facebook, and MP3 players with thousands of songs to keep us entertained. We didn't have multiplayer games either or really long MMOGs that consumed massive amounts of time. A good long 100 hour game was nice because you felt like you got your money's worth.
I could see now that the game isn't appealing but you have to think of it as what it was when it came out. Seriously I played Combat on the Atari forever and I bet I couldn't play it five minutes now. Times change.

The first 6 Final Fantasy games were better. The premature leap to crappy 3d was a big mistake and the game just isn't as impressive as everyone claims. I think the love for it is a case of, oh, it's the first FF game most people played so it must be the best.

Get it. It is really good if you like that kind of fantastical massive battle kind of thing. Zelda on the other hand, I have found to be extremely boring and is pretty much the same thing as its predecessor. Nothing new. Combat and graphics are bad.
MH3 is great though. And once you've finished the solo mode, you can play for almost as long online.

I played every one of them and although I wouldn't say 7 was the best of the first 7 but it wasn't the worst. The best was 6 hands down. The first one was good when it came out, but I wouldn't play it now unless it was the PSP or Ipad version. The old one is way too dated for me. I would like to keep the opinion of what it was when it first came out.

I have another pre-internet example for you:
Back when Ocarina of Time came out, the press was so overwhelmingly in favor of it that I figured it was all over-blown. You must understand, I had just gotten a N64, and I only had a SNES up to that point. In fact, I had never played a Zelda game (but that's another story...). I somehow came to the conclusion that no game could be that great, and actually made up my mind not to play it to show my "individuality." Then (thankfully), one of my friends at high school cajoled me into borrowing and playing his copy of it. Suffice to say, I was hooked, and have many fond memories of that game to this day.
This has served as a very valuable life lesson for me, and to this day it makes me suspicious of a lot of the "haters" I see on the internet, as it makes me wonder how much of their vitriol is based fact and how much of it is based on the same urge to not be lumped in with the crowd.

Having finally gotten into Dragon Age on the 360 after my first attempt I feel like I should point out that the textures and control scheme did not constitute what it is that leaves me cold about the game: It's how detached the combat makes me feel. Hitting the 'attack' button and just letting your character run off and do his or her own thing? Dull. And unlike what PC gamers ALWAYS seem to tell me, using a gorram mouse doesn't make a difference there.
Also, I've been put off a bunch of games by Zero Punctuation - and by the same token, there are some I bought solely because Yahtzee didn't destroy them in a review!
