I don't bother with Yahtzee at all.

Vandez, I get what you mean about the combat system in DA:O but just wanted to point out that it never phased mein the KotOR games. I guess Ferelden and the DA:O characters just didn't spin my sponsons. Everything about the game just felt so ugly. :shrugs:

Back when Ocarina of Time came out, the press was so overwhelmingly in favor of it that I figured it was all over-blown. You must understand, I had just gotten a N64, and I only had a SNES up to that point. In fact, I had never played a Zelda game (but that's another story...). I somehow came to the conclusion that no game could be that great, and actually made up my mind not to play it to show my "individuality." Then (thankfully), one of my friends at high school cajoled me into borrowing and playing his copy of it. Suffice to say, I was hooked, and have many fond memories of that game to this day.

This has served as a very valuable life lesson for me, and to this day it makes me suspicious of a lot of the "haters" I see on the internet, as it makes me wonder how much of their vitriol is based fact and how much of it is based on the same urge to not be lumped in with the crowd.

I was the same way with Halo. I thought it really couldn't be all that great, but I decided to try it, and now its one of my favorite series. Zelda OTOH, I had played them since Link to the Past, so I really don't ever hesitate on them.

pfff, If you like playing your games a year later and missing out on how the 3 games are supposed to come together as one giant one Anyways the PS3 version has all the DLC included I think so you'll be getting some good stuff there too. I must have put over 100 hours into ME2. Mainly to get the ending I wanted.

I've already done a character-import playthrough of ME2 on my 360 and will likely buy ME3 for 360 at release so I doubt I will miss anything. If anything, what I have missed so far is the DLC because I don't want to pay MS for a Live account (which would entail paying MS for a wireless attachment for the 360).

You don't need to pay for a Gold account to purchase DLC. Gold is only required for online multiplayer. Trust me MS wants to make it as easy as possible to purchase more stuff from them.

So I take it your Xbox isn't hooked up to the interweb then? If it was you'd already have a free silver account and be downloading free Demos, videos and whatnot.
Don't know nothing about no wifi I get online the way the Ahmish do by sticking a cable in the back.

While it's not a complete turn around, Final Fantasy IV I initially played and found it 'ok', but I got the remake of it for the DS a while ago and replaying that has made it my favourite one.

FFVI was the first I played, but I think I now prefer 7 over it for some reason. I don't know if it's the cyberpunkish start or what. That said, I haven't replayed 6 in a while. It's still in my top 3 for that series.

Another is Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix. When I initially played it, I thought "Why are the characters so ugly? and they messed with the formula!".

I left it for a while, but lately played it again with some friends and had a blast; and it wasn't so different as my first reaction (though I find the sprites a little uglier than they could be).

Maybe it was the remixed music not having the same 'impact' as the originals?

Vandez wrote:Having finally gotten into Dragon Age on the 360 after my first attempt I feel like I should point out that the textures and control scheme did not constitute what it is that leaves me cold about the game: It's how detached the combat makes me feel. Hitting the 'attack' button and just letting your character run off and do his or her own thing? Dull. And unlike what PC gamers ALWAYS seem to tell me, using a gorram mouse doesn't make a difference there.

Also, I've been put off a bunch of games by Zero Punctuation - and by the same token, there are some I bought solely because Yahtzee didn't destroy them in a review!

That is called the Yahtzee effect. If you watch his reviews first, you will notice the glaring problems with a game that you might have otherwise overlooked. The same goes for a good game. If he doesn't tear it apart (Like that Batman game), then you are going to enjoy it even more.

Same here. I drilled a hole in my wall between my room with the router/pc and living room. Works pretty good.

Hehe, fair enough.

I know I must be enjoying it as I clocked nine hours on it yesterday, just love all the interactions so much.

Finally getting to a higher level (Lvl 14 I think I was before I left for work today) so the combats aren't as life and death as they where near the start. You know you're paranoid of dying at a moments notice when you've done probably less than half the game and you already have more saves (by almost 50) than you did for the whole game in ME1.

I love the combat mind, in fact I'm liking it that much I may take a look at a couple of cover based games I'd written off out of hand (like GoW.) I'll admit I was kinda uncertain of it at first, a few accidental cover leaps into gunfire had me worried, but now I'm getting used to it, plus probably some help from unit upgrades, I love it. Mad sprints into cover, sniping folks across huge rooms with the comments that earns you from certain team members, and in general just using your squad on a tactical level, its just amazing fun.

It's fast becoming my fave 360 game evah!!

People actually go to Yahtzee for game reviews? All this time I thought he was just someone who raged hard and apologized to none that we could all enjoy XD. Not to say that he is necessarily "wrong," cause I don't think he is, but he blows flaws way out of proportion to how bad they really are. He's even admitted it a few times on his own show (and that no one ever seems to like him when he gives a good review lol).

But yeah, don't get your reviews from Yahtzee. He's a great laugh, and very articulate, but not a very good person to go to for good reviews.

I've recently changed my mind concerning Company of Heroes. I originally had a great distaste for the game because there were a few things about it that just irked me (infantry really should die when shot...), but I've been playing it again, and it's sort of grown on me. I've especially found a few mods I like such as Normandy 44 and Blitzkrieg, though in most of these mods I'm continuing to note that the Germans seem to become more unbalanced with respect to the Allies XD. Still. I like the Panzer Elite, so I can live with it

I ignore the internet and go based on what I think wil entertain me. Dragon Age entertained me, though it is slowly becoming boring on second play. Oblivion has eaten 83 hours so far, and I'm just about ready to stop. Still haven't really started Fallout, but I guess it will suck me in too. Batman is awesome, but I sorta suck at it so I've stopped playing out of frustration
What I'm trying to say is console gaming is a pretty me-centred activity, so I only care about what I think about it. (I do find the conversations here about it interesting though, I suppose because I have a better insight into what the various posters enjoy outside of consoles.)

That was pretty much my point about Yahtzee. That's why I said "will notice the glaring problems with a game that you might have otherwise overlooked". He sort of makes things more obvious. I usually play the game first and then watch his review tear it apart.

I hated fallout 3 (thought shooting mechanic was weak and that really turned me off at first) when I first bought it and left it in a drawer collecting dust for several months before I decided to give it a second try (was major bored) and lo... I found it good.

Lots of subtle things, the mechanics become much more standard FPS (for example aiming down ironsights) whereas fallout 3 was very clunky.

Meh, I could've ripped Oblivion and FO3 a lot worse than Yahtzee did.

A lot of the hype around DA:O came from people who had either never played an RPG before or who actually though that games like Oblivion were top tier RPGs.

Interestingly, Yahtzee got me to buy a game. Now, keep in mind that I don't play a lot of video games. I haven't owned a console since my Genesis, and my desktop is seven years old. I play a handful of games over and over, but I dont' play a lot.

Anyway, I had seen Painkiller at the Biglots, but it looked really stupid. I think I said, "this looks like an updated doom rip off." I then saw Yahtzee's review, and of course, it's a really, really good doom ripoff. So I bought it. And of course I love it.

Originally, I hated Resident Evil 5. I grew up with the Resident Evil series, and like a lot of other people, I considered all of the changes to be an absolute travesty. I could stand RE4 somewhat, but RE5 just took things a bit too far (Manginas riding motorcycles and firing AK47s? No thanks). However, a friend of mine convinced me to pick up the co-op with him, and we had so much fun with it that we ended up playing it nearly every day for weeks.

When I initially played The Lord of the Rings Online, I found it to be an awful WoW clone. I don't know what changed my mind, but after playing it for a while, I found that literally every aspect of it was better than WoW, and I actually felt like I was a part of the world (something which WoW fails to do completely). Now, it's currently my favorite MMO, and I spend quite a bit of time on it.

Also, I originally hated Oblivion for all of the changes it made from Morrowind (I got about 500+ hours out of Morrowind, so this was bound to happen). However, after picking it up and playing it after my first attempt, I realized that it has it's own merits, and is both enjoyable and respectable on a completely different level than it's predecessor.
