I was thinking about which to take, I have friends and have heard that shoota boyz pound for pound are just generally better, 18 inch range , 2 shots, and assault, but with their ballistic skill is it better to have the extra attack in the end with sluggas?

Shoota boyz allow you to get a round of shooting in before melee, as opposed to needing to run.

Slugga boyz can reach melee faster, due to them running all the time.

What's better to you? One more melee attack or two shooting attacks before going into melee.

A full mob of boyz can pull off 120 attacks on the charge. How often do you have a full mob that hits enemy lines?

Depends on the mission and the army you are playing against. Overall, shootas comes out on top slightly.

I prefer shoota boyz because sometimes your transport vehicles get bown up and you end up foot slogging anyways. That and they can hold objectives better.

Lets break it down i suppose. That might help.

Efficiency on foot

Shoota boyz on competitive standards are overall better because they can get that many more attacks (shots) in before battle which means they get a few free wounds in before combat. Orks have low initiative and usually go last or at the same time so every wound/body counts. They can also hold down objectives better with the 18 inch range. The problem though is that they do not get into combat as fast and are liable to more shooting. Lose an attack in combat however.

Slugga boyz run and get into combat. Their pistols have as much luck getting a wound on something as the bolt pistol. They aren't as good as holding objectives but have more attacks during combat. They will be more effective in a more strung out fight.

Overall a mix of both is pretty good depending on your situation. For an all comers list all shoota boyz would be safer.

Efficiency in vehicles.

Shoota boyz have no place in trukks because it only holds 12 boyz and is used to get boyz into assault. It'd be more effective to get more attacks in combat then try your hand at some pot shots. The battle wagon is a different story however. With av 14 and 20 slots, open top. It is like a moving pillbox

Slugga boyz are better for trukks because they get the attacks out of the truck and need it with their small numbers.

Modeling

Slugga boyz are definitely more fun to model and paint. I personally got tired of the shoota boy pretty fast. Its a very bland model with a gun and just takes all the orkiness out of it.

I missed a lot but this is everything i know about orks. Hope this helps in your decision.

I take one 30 man mob of each, and some extra sluggas in a trukk. Shoota boyz can put out an absolutely stupid amount of ranged fire, and they can fire on the move. Give them three big shootas to really show your target who's boss. They're effective in hand to hand too, so they're really solid as an all around unit. Sluggas are good too, and you can get them cheaply with Black Reach models. Just run with them every turn if they're on foot.

Slugga if in a Trukk or Battlewagon. Shoota if on foot. Best rule of thumb to go with.

They're both really excellent choices. But, I'd vote for Shoota. That lets you soften the enemy up a bit better before charging, which results in more Orks surviving long enough to get their attacks in, which ultimately means you can get more CC attacks with Shoota Boyz than Slugga.

I prefer slugga choppa.
If I'm playing trukkboyz, then my squads are so small that the extra (potential) 12 attacks on the charge are important.. or, heck, even when BEING charged.

If I'm playing foot sloggers, I find that I run most turns, making the shootas unnecessary on those turns. By the tim my whittled down boys unit has made it to wherever they're going, they can use all of the extra attacks they can get.

Slugga/choppa for me, every time.
