What color do you want your moon craters? There are many ways to paint them. I would figure out the color first and then spray paint them a very dark tone of that color. After that you can take a large brush and drybrush on lighter colors of the same gradient. That is a fast but highly effective way to paint basically any scenery. Best of luck!

Well, you should get a dark grey or black primer; you can get these at any hardware store for like 5 bucks. You should then get a fairly large brush and get a dark grey, mid grey, and light grey paint. If we're talking GW, that means Adeptus Battlegrey, Codex Grey, then Fortress Grey. Just paint the crater in the darkest color, then drybrush on the next two greys. Leave it a bit darker in the middle of the crater. Easy as could be!

Just make sure you wash them well before you paint/prime.
Mine had some kind of anti-paint forcefield on them
Personally I love washes (as I am lazy and hate painting), so would start with a white/light colour and darken using washes.
I painted mine a kind of light tan/bone colour, and washed with a mid brown several times until the colour looked OK. A brief bit of drybrushing on the edges with the original tan/bone colour and we are golden. All the paints were Dulux tester pots which I got for about 99p from Wilcos.
You can also add some black drybrushing to simulate burn marking inside the craters.
If you want to use greys, go ahead... I chose the colours for mine as I was making it desert themed

You've had lots of good feed back.
Mine blastscapes below are sprayed black (and similarly vacuformed like the craters). Then 3 layers of grey craft paint drybrushed in sucession with a large brush. Purchased at Michaels. Dark Grey, Med Grey, Light Grey. The brown color is weathering powered swished in the middle for a little color variation. Not super sexy but it gets the job done on the table. Details on the meteors and lava were addeds after.

You go over the area with a liberal coat of white. Then you do thinned paint/glazes. Start with a white:yellow, followed by yellow, Followed by yellow/Orange, followed by orange, followed by orange/red, followed by red, follwed by red:black. Each layer you leave a bit of the prior showing so the area painted is smaller and smaller as you move to red/black.
