So Hu Jintao's State dinner was last week, the most formal event the US can hold. Marines in full dress uniform, women in evening gowns, men in tuxes.

Did they think we wouldn't notice the piano piece? I also like the idea we are humiliated becuase they were insulting to us. Considering how scripted these meetings are, I wonder what their diplomat corp thought of the decision. The pianist gos home, they have to stay and work with us.

I don't really know, I looked through the link KK provided and saw a few from the US delegation dressed in a similar manner.

Wore a business suit to a formal (read: tux) event. It was a 'social' gathering, not a business meeting.

As Ahtman said; the dress code for a "black tie" event is tuxedo with bow tie for men, gowns for ladies. Hu's wearing a regular suit & tie. It's actually pretty insulting. Or means he's an ignoramus. Either way he looks like a tool.

I think the biggest issue is the song. I've been to plenty of international social gatherings of a formal nature that feature people wearing their preferred formal garb. It is usually considered fine insofar as it is fashionable for the relevant culture (Indira Gandhi almost wore a Sari, for example).

I'm willing to give leeway for the elimination of the Tux as a Chinese interpretation of Western garb. I'm not so willing to do so given the music selection.

That said, no one (important) really cares about the "honor" of the nation. If they want to posture we should let them.

Tux /= suit

For a president a suit is what you wear every day, this is supposed to be a fancy occasion even for a president.

Apparently during the Bush administration we played the Taiwan (Republic of China) national anthem and not the People's Republic of China anthem. But that at least was a mistake, not a deliberate plan to insult our guests.

Am I the only one that's horrified by the 1st Lady's dress?

It seems a bit OTT, and the choice of color seems odd considering who the dinner was in honor of. She looks a wrinkly, red fright that climbed down the chimney what with all the black smudges on that thing.

I didn't even notice what Hu was wearing I was so distracted by that mess.

This thread needs more Hu.

Frankly, I don't see a problem, but maybe I just couldn't give a feth less what they were wearing and am more interested in actual substance.

That pic is not at a flattering angle for Michelle's gown. I like what I can see of it from here. Red & black is always nice, and red is a good luck color in China.
