I was wondering what people thought of the whole Horde of Ogres ~18 Ogres with a BSB w/ Runemaw, compared to 3 units of 6 Ogres and the BSB's Banner being nonmagical...

I have to admit, I miss the old Infantry battles of 4E compared to this 5E wonderland of APCs/IFVs everywhere. It's like we jumped from WWI to WWII.

Ogre hordes are tempting, but outside of big games (3000+), they have a big risk of being shot/magic'd long before they get into CC, and that is a BIG point sink to lose turn 2 to PoS or Purple Sun. I find 6-9 man bull units work best, and 9 strong Ogre minihorde with a tyrant will rip and tear through almost anything.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

Ogre Hordes are very hard units.

even sustained cannon fire can have trouble killing enough of them(the chance of failing to wound combined with rolling a 1 or 2 for the multiple wounds is pretty good)

About the only thing that can rip an ogre horde up is a Purple Sun or PoS.

unless you are above or at 3k i wouldn't do a proper horde.

many units of 9 ogres+characters will normally be sufficient.

an Ogre horde of 18+ models is a very effective point denial unit. i have played games where i have not given up any VPs at all and reaped a ton in retur simply because it is impossable for any enemy to kill that many ogres in 6 turns, barring Nuke spells.

They said it, but I'll say it too. Big AE spells can hurt. I think a lot of "smaller" units is better. You want to maximize stomp and you're already going to be out-unitted by your enemy. So you'll be getting hit in flanks and rear a lot because you got no one else to cover you.

At 2400 to 2500 points;
I like a tyrant, a BSB and a butcher; along with 3 units of 17 bulls.

Two units 6 wide and 3 deep running up the left of the table, with a unit 3 wide and 6 deep running up the middle.

That puts a table edge on one flank, and a 6 deep steadfast blob on the other. Once committed, you can reform into horde for more attacks if needed.
