I was just thinking about how the kroot models (as cool as they are) just don't fit my Tau army. So I thought '' Hey would YOU let me use Tau firewarriors as kroot?'', So I put the question to you. Would You let me use Tau firewarriors as kroot?

So long as you model them Kroot-like, it's fine. Make sure they don't look at all like your regular Fire Warriors, make their armor (or lack of armor) match Kroot, and tell your opponent beforehand.

For me they wouldn't have to look anything like Kroot, but they would have to be completely distinct from your normal fire warriors.

Well I going to have to post some pics ( a little later when i'm not at work) but my fw have white and ice blue armour with black cothing, and i was going to convert the pusle carbines to be less chunky and to remove the left arm pads and finally to only have bare heads with bandanas, eye patches, scars ect.

That sounds like as good a conversion as any, I suppose. Make sure they've got knives or something else for close combat weapons.

I'm thinking about using the knives from the cadians sprues, but not sure if' they should be swords or just daggers.

New questiong - swords or knives?

Using one army unit to "count as" a completely different unit from the same army is always confusing.
Better use a different Xeno race to represent them.

nah, that's not necessary.

Just give 'em swords or spears and give them another armour-color

Well, first think of the differences between Tau and Kroot.
You are in charge of accounting for them.
Weapons must be correct. Armor must be correct. Remember, fire warriors have 4+ armor. Kroot have 0 armor.

Honestly you could do a half-assed job fairly easily. It would be very hard though, to do a good job.

If you did it, and did it well, then I would have no problem playing against them. Sounds like a novel idea.

I would let you if they were bulkier, had had katanas (and the squad leader had a banner)

Alternatively, they were ninjas (explains the lack of armour)

Either way, do it.

Just an idea, but you could make these 'savage tau'.

Give 'em dreadlocks, almost no armor, cover the bases in stone, and put lots of gore on their sword/near their mouth.

Sounds fair enough. Modelling them to be different and have the right kind of weapons would be a definate go for casual games, hell you could just use regular FW if your gaming mates are cool with it. But if you modelled them good enough, let's for overkill sake say at a professional level, could you use them in tourneys, or do you have to use the kroot models? Anyone?

I'd say it changes from tourny to tourny. I went to one in Mt Gravatt where only models bought from GW were allowed (and extreme conversions were frowned on), but another where a wickedly converted Obliterator was allowed as a Souldgrinder. The guy did pretty well with Chaos Deamons too, but had horrible luck in his last match.

I would not because they would be too close to Tau Fire Warriors.

If you don't want to use Kroot in the army, just don't use Kroot.

Alternatively, find a completely different set of alien models to represent Kroot.

I am building a Kroot-a-like force out of these...

Don't forget to completely rewrite the fundamentals of Tau background that everyone knows

Alternatives I can think of:
1.) Catachans
2.) Star Wars Miniatures Wookies
3.) Copplestone Predators (my favorite) http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/range.php?range=FW

Led by this OOP Heresy Miniature:

and filled up with these (too armoured) Ainsty Miniatures just for fun: http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/aiinap.htm

BTW I take these Infinity miniatures as Pathfinders:

I can see some Tau going into hand to hand combat, after all the fire caste did develope from hunters. Although you'd have to create a unique backstory for them, like they were disciples of Farsight, or perhaps a sept that lacked Kroot allies and the Ethreals authorized Fire Caste Warriors to train in such a brutish manner. Alternatively, make them like the Honor guards, so that it's partly explained why they're combat specialists.

In anycase, they should be very distinct from Fire Warriors. Alot less armor (namely, the giant shoulder pad) as well as maybe exposed head and musculature. Mix in some catachan parts with Tau Hands (they have 4 fingers counting the thumb) and some daggers with some sort of pistol-like weapon to account for the Kroot Rifle.

That predator model is great, didn't realise Heresy miniatures had made one of those.

Think it would be awesome to use as a 'Spyrer' in a Necromunda campaign, maybe with an added special rule or 2? (and would be awesome fun to play against..)
