Rules state that models in a unit need to be in base to base contact on deep striking in, but with my tyranids this is impossible! How do I manage this? For shrikes which I modelled is the situation different than gargoyles which are standard built? When pushed together the wings clash so they cannot get into base to base contact.

A lovely lad argued that the unit must auto mishap because of this, which seemed a bit harsh but I couldn't really argue against the strict RAW.

Any ideas?

Advice? Do the best you can. I've yet to finds single person have a real, serious problem with a situation the rules just don't allow for.

You can also just use some bases as a marker for them and when you make your run move spread them out and swap in the real models.

I would counter argue that he's being a tool and needs to grow a sportsmanship gland.

Many models, especially Tyranids but Orks and many others as well, have trouble pushing together into even base contact like this. You just do the best you can. Everyone has to deal with this issue sometimes, for assaults at least.

Don't play him? He's being dishonest if he's pretending he's never made allowances for models not being able to get into actual base contact due to arms, weapons, wings, tails, or whatever getting in the way. If it happens in the tournament, bring it to the organizer. You might want to take a couple of particularly dynamic models and physically demonstrate the assault issue too, but if the organizer actually plays the game at all, he's already aware of this issue and will tell your opponent that Gargoyles are intended to be able to Deep Strike, so pretending that they always Mishap is ridiculous.

Yep. I had TFG try to pull that at one of my tournies once, but in this case it was the new BA with wing jumppacks (can't recall the name off the top of my head)

You could model the wings so that, if you place them in a circle with their wings out he cant reach to charge you, then in your own assault, you face the opponent and get in nicely, wing reaching back. se how he like that

If the models can't really allow for it, and so long as it wasn't modeling for advantage, no biggy.

Can you detach the gargoyles from their stands? this way you can place the bases in contact and if the other player demands that he needs a model for line of sight or something like that, simply replace as many as you need to in order for them to do so and as soon as you can move again you can replace.

As for the "lovely lad" merely drill him for every RAW mistake he makes. That or next time you play against them/with them/near them move your models vertically above the board. According to RAW you don't actually have to end your movement with the models base on the board, you just can't move outside it's boarders.

I have the same problem with Stormboyz, added to which they simply will not stay standing..grrr

I'm working on weighting the bases, but the models are so top heavy..

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

Thats easily remedied if you can get coins heavy (and small) enough, if not, start slicing up some fishing weights
