I've been seeing Minotour BSBs popping up in beastmen lists. Its appealing to me from a modeling standpoint, as the army standard I'm planning is so huge it would take a mino to lug it around. On the other hand, it seems like a waste from a tactical standpoint. You get a frenzied bSb who is less likely to be where you want him to be, and if you hide him in the back you're wasting points on close combat abilities. Am I missing something here?

I don't know, a Mino BSB will be driving down the middle into the heart of the enemy; supported with units on either side, and more coming in from behind (hopefully).

The middle seems like a good place for a BSB to me.
A 2+ armor save T5 bsb isn't exactly easy to take out; especially if he's in a unit of extra hand weapon minotaur, and is packing the +1 strength banner.

I think its mainly the stat lines. Most BSB's can be very easily killed unless set up right. Before you add extra protection to a minotaur BSB it already is pretty survivable.

The problem: if you do manage to lose a combat by a lot and then break, your very expensive gorebull just went pop. I've actually made this happen with a unit of empire knights with birona's timewarp on them, and that's not even close to the choppiest unit you could find. He double-failed a 5.

I know minotaurs don't lose combat a lot, but sooner or later it will happen. If you're going with this build, a stubborn crown is indicated.

If I should field a gorebull bsb, it would be because I wanted to add frenzy and +1 s to a core unit, gor or ungor. tried it once and sure enoguh I needed my "Look out sir", at one crittical point. The way I see it minos. are strong enough as it is, and I rather have +1 s on a core unit and look out sir instead of frenzy. But it is still really tempting.

I don't know, Minos dish it out, but don't take a punch well.
If you're going toe to toe with anything Init 3 or less(or against great weapons), S6 lets you do all that damage before you take losses.
The nice thing about the +1 strength banner, you can get away with using shields.
From what I've seen, minotaur are plenty choppy enough, but could use more staying power.

I'd say I'm a fan of the manbane banner, but from what I've seen, things don't last more than a round or two against a unit of 8 minotaur.

IMO, if you aren't going with at least 7+BSB for the minotaur, you shouldn't be running the BSB in the minotaur.

Of course you loose your perry save to frenzy. But against tough units I could see this working well. However tough units tend to be at s5 at least, so I think that you still need to consider AHW.

I think a lot of the Minotaur BSBs came from 7th, where, as stated, you could stick 'em with a bunch of gors with two hand weapons and the +1S banner.

What's that about losing your Parry save to Frenzy?

If a model is frenzied it is too enraged to use a shield to make a parry save.

Which is why Tzeentch CWs have HW & Shield and khorne CWs have extra HW or Halberds.

Oh, I see. I thought your claim was that Frenzy negates your opponent's Parry save.

Not that a 6+ is going to do anything worthwhile for models that are generally fielded in such small numbers (Warriors or Minotaurs).
