Hey all, I am thinking about embarking on a rather large project, sadly it is not my original idea, but something none the less I would like to do. I recently purchased a 1/6 scale "Cable" statue/model kit that I would like to convert into a Space Marine, here is a link to the kit I got, not from ebay though;
http://cgi.ebay.com/Movie-CABLE-1-6-Vinyl-Model-Kit-12inch-/120666662387?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c184b25f3
I found a link on the internet a while back of a guy who did the same thing, never could find a picture of it completed though, so not my idea, just going to do my own thing with it.
I will mostly definitely keep the pose the same and build the power suit around him. I am feeling like I need a challenge and I think this would definitely tax my skills. Now I dont have a lot off experience in sculpting, and I am trying to decide what medium I want to sculpt with. I would prefer not to use green stuff as that would make this build really expensive and heavy, not to mention to experience in using green stuff far have not been fun...Also, it has to be a self hardening medium, as I will not be able to "bake" the model once it is done, that would melt the vinyl.
So I turn it over to you, the good people of Dakka, what other mediums are out there to sculpt with?
Ashton

^try air dry clay...it dries at the air^^ and is a lot cheaper... or you could be really cheap and make papermache`...
could all work very well provided you have the skills, don´t look in my direction as i haven´t even begun working with GS but did some clumsy models with airclay...and it works, tho it gets rather heavy then...
cheers and good luck, vik Automatically Appended Next Post: by the way original your idea or not, cable is still fething cool and i like your idea a lot, he will stay helmetless, non?

Apoxie Sculpt. Probably the cheapest and best for this. Oh yeah. air dry clay IS NOT cheaper, its a heck of a lot more expensive.
Apoxie Sculpt smooths very easily with water, dries rock hard and I love it.
google aves studios for it.

There is a wide range of two part epoxy putties:
Green Stuff -- It is much cheaper if you don't buy it from GW.
Brown Stuff
Procreate outty
Milliput (several grades, the yellow-grey and silver are best for modelling)
http://www.milliput.com/home.htm
Also
Air drying clay is £19.99 for a 12.5 Kg block on Amazon.co. uk
If this were my project I think I would aim to do the bulk work with Milliput, which is relatively cheap, and the fine details with Green Stuff. Check around the Interwebs for best pricing.
If this is going on to a wargames table you want a finish that will withstand some handling in transport and use, which I don't think clay will provide.

Thanks for all the input guys...
@Killkrazy, this will not be a mini, this will be a figure so it should be about 12-13in tall when complete, just sittin' on a shelf collecting dust
@Viktor, At this point yeah I think he will be helmet-less, I am planning on building the armor that has the "hgh-collar" much like what the BT upgrade spur has, that way I dont have to worry about sculpting a helmet. I am not sure yet on the chapter, I currently play Blood Angels, but I think that this particular pose could look nice as a Black Templar as well....

yep thats for sure but i think layering the clay with PVA glue would help in that mater... but then the miliput is indeed better in every way and gets you better edges all the way from what i´ve geard...

If you're a newbie, yet serious about getting into sculpting, i'd warmly recommend a polymer clay.
- Polymer clay need to be 'baked' in an oven to cure, leaving you plenty of time to practice on sculpting.
After that, when you feel you've gotten used to sculpting, you could swich to epoxy.
- But besides that, i haven't got a clue of which epoxy to buy, rather than telling you to read up elsewhere - or alternatively take killkrazy and co's advice to heart.

That or Sculpey are generally the better known polymer clays.

Yup! Bought some myself the other day. I'm currently collecting data and materials to make a Farseer.

well i will be waiting mate, saw some greater scale stuff done by a freind and the stuff has surley potential and if this works out there is no limit...also i thought it might be usable for pressmoulding too? what do you think?

Hard to say, really... People mostly use different kinds of epoxy for different kinds of materials. - Brown stuff makes for good, sharp edges. - Green stuff is more organic (think tyranids/skin) - Other forms of putties... Well, i'm not sure. Furthermore, i know that the amounts of epoxy putties you put together (yellow and blue to make GS) bears an effect aswell. I did, however, wanted to try out FIMO, as i can always re-model it. It doesn't dry up on me, unless i bake it. - This means, by my logic, that the progress can go on forever, and also means that you gain alot more practice. Note, however, that i'm still on the beginner-state myself. I haven't fiddled too much around with it. But i've got some decent knowledge from browsing the web for guides, e-books and the alike, got lucky a few times. EDIT: If by press mounding, you mean casting with Green Stuff/similar, then yes! You can. I think it's limited, though. But secret be it, i'm in the middle of testing it myself, as we speak!
