The title says it all.

Personally I think orks, beacuse it's fun and not as serious as the other armies.

Well if you're going to do this based off of background I think you need to add every army more specifically each of the playable Space Marine chapters because not all of the Space Marines have the same background.

That being said I'll go with Space Wolves, they're humanities greatest defenders AND they're drunks. What's not to love

Apart from being in power armour and getting all the shiniest of toys they don't...
I chose Dark Eldar...
I would have chosen SW if they were there but go figure...
Although Dark Eldar have some of my favorite background stories and theme ever... Space pirates!

I know what it means, after they left Terra and reunited with their primarchs the only similarities that remained in background are the equiptment they use like Purplefood said. That's the reason they are differant chapters, they have differant backgrounds. The background of the SW is nothing like the background of the Smurfs

I'd have to say Necrons. I've read through their codex for fun on several occasions. I enjoy both their background and the descriptions of battles against them.

What does best mean? Most or the coolest?

most, is the space marines But I personally think the imperial guard have the coolest backround.

Most would just mean a big book. Best is either coolest or best written and considering GWs unofficial stance on good writing... well it comes down to coolest.

Demon Hunters and Witch Hunters personally.

They aren't as fleshed out yet as Space Marines; but its no surprise that their books are all pretty much better than Space Marine books. (they've all been written very very well). Its one of the few times in 40K where the story isn't "Lawl...so Ultramarines fought Nids and like...THEY WERE SO MANY. Buts we wins.". There are great books done on SMs and IG I agree; its just they really only tend to deal with war and big action; theres less actual story in it.

Theres actual character development. Some SM novels do it well; but some of the bad writers have spoiled parts of SM background. You get to know the Inquisitors and are brought into their tales and journeys of conspiracies, revelations and more varied enemies and is isn't just about GreatBigMassiveBattlesOfDoooom! I mean, compare the Eisenhorn: Omnibus or Ravenor: Omnibus to the Space Wolves: Omnibus.

Eldar.

Eldar all the way.

@Hyena, that's not a fair comparison! The SW Omnibus is pretty damn poor, Prospero Burns (which is by the same author) on the other hand...

Enlist as a virtual Ultramarine! Click here for my Chaos Gate (PC) thread.

I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

And at the same time Inquisitors and Space Marines have 2 entirely differant methods, yes Inquisitors can fight but they do;ot serve the same role and Space Marines. It's 2 differant character types and so of course one is probably going to be fleshed out more then the other because the complexity of the character type has to be shown.

Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions

Ummm...somewhere...

Even though I don't play them, SM in general (namely the first 18 legions) have the best backround, why? Because of the HH/Great Crusade, essentially taking over a galaxy in a few hundred years is no simple feat, and the way that SM are just so mentally and physically powerful

Well I did say some SM novels are good heh.

Hey I like the Space Wolves Omnibus, that's why I own both of them

My problem with them is simply that they're...so over the top really (much like the Blood Angels).

For background; it all depends on what people want. People who crave/love action tend to prefer SM novels. People who crave/love story tend to like the Inquisition novels. Imperial Guard....are the middle of the road for this. They have a decent split of novels which are background focused and which are action focused.

The xenos races don't have quite as much novels to fully dissect them. Eldar are def background focused (Slannesh worshippers too...apparantly). Chaos tends to be similar to SM; with a bit more background to explain how they fell and all.

Of course, theres always the one or two books that buck the trend.

None of them; the deepest backgrounds i've seen have been from DIY Chapters/Warbands/Craftworld/Septs etc.

If we count DIY stuff, then all of the armies have great backgrounds, but without DIY, i'd have to say they're all pretty damn shallow IMHO.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Personally i think the Astartes, both loyal and traitor, have the best background. This is partially thanks to the greater effort that has gone into their fluff (and because there is so much more of it).
