I have just moved jobs (doing the same thing I was before but for more money in a different place). However, where I was before had the latest programs which got you from input to output in about 4 or 5 steps. Where I am now has programs dinosaurs would have found antiquated. In the last place I worked, they were just phasing in the newest set of programs to replace the program that the department I am now working in has not even started to use yet. Everything takes longer, is more complicated and god forbid if you make a mistake (you have to not only start again, but go into the system folders to delete the mistake). Forget to print what you were just working on, or the system decided not to bother printing? Oh, I’m afraid you have to go into the system files, delete what you just did and start again and click print when it asks you to! Want to edit something you have just done? No chance! Go to the system files! You can’t even copy and paste stuff as it is a dos based program so you have to type everything in over and over and over and over again. *growls* [/rant against old inefficient programs] Anyone else have to suffer the joys of such rubbish systems that reduce you to tears every time you have to use them?

Ball is in your court dude. You know how to use the new software so become its champion and get with your boss and become the new software champion and get that system updated.
Or, alternativly, sit there and gripe.
Sounds like our old system.

The only problem is that I am very small fry in the scale of things, and as I work in the public sector, it is not up to me, or even my managers managers manager as to what systems we use. What I don’t understand however is that they actually have the old (for me anyway, it would be the next step up for these guys) system here but they don’t use it. The problem is that the old system has information on it which goes back over 15+ years and I don’t think they want to scrap it or transfer the data (even the people who are using the newer system are having to duplicate the information onto the old one as well).
It is just very frustrating.

Migration is a tricky thing. An acceptable archive method of the old data must be found and approved before anything else can be done.

If you have the time you could make an efficiency report and than at the end add suggestions like upgrade software and suggest a migration plan.
I produced one for my previous work place and I won over management and they took the report up to the top and its was implemented.

I think they are actually having a review at the moment... certainly the staff here have been going to various meetings/briefings today and from what I have heard it was about various efficiency measures.
This is exactly what happened in the last place I worked before they brought in the new systems anyway.

Sounds like someone needs an analysis of their process written out on a flow chart....
