So here is the story, i was sitting in science today with all of my work done and dusted so i just go for a "wonder" about the room whilst sir was you. Whilst looking at the amphibian posters i saw that one of the newts was called Triturus carnifex. Carnifex. This has to be where GW stole the name from. The evidence is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triturus_carnifex

If you did not find this interesting then i just wanted to tell you all.

Or it could be that carnifex is a latin word meaning executioner or butcher.

Carnifex means butcher in latin. Lictor means hired thug (officially a senators bodyguard) in latin. Most of the names for the tyranid range are either greek or roman in origin.

That is just the specific name of that newt.
Carnifex has been discussed elsewhere on a thread about the derivation of names Small Waagh.
It means "executioner" apparently from Rome iirc.

Well spotted though.
but not as well spotted as a newt

Btw it is butcher not executioner. Executioner was deemed to unseemly to be a profexxional vocation but Plebians with expert knowledge on how to best carve up and kill animals had multiple jobs in ancient rome hint hint.

Isn’t the spring loaded device in an Apothecary's Narthecium also called a Carnifex, which would make sense as it’s used for a humane kill.

But to the OP, GW has a long history of 'liberating' other people ideas, whether they be historical, religious or fictional.

Zoanthropy Is a type of delusion where a patient believes they are turning into another type of creature.

Not sure how relevent that is but i work in Mental health and have had it crop up a few times.

Yea, but see also:

And the fan favorite that barely counts-Melta-bombs are not 'melta' bombs.
I had a longer list somewhere. . .

Re-using the same name in the same setting for multiple different things is more annoying to me than grabbing a(n obscure) word to use as a name.

It's not really stealing...
The taxonomic classification system uses to Latin words to identify the Genus and Species of an organism. This ensures that no matter what language you speak you know what creature someone else is talking about.
The adeptus biologis of the AdMech are responsible for naming stuff and they obviously use the same system... if anything it's a pretty smart idea and pretty well thought out.

Nope.

The ultimate Tau killing device.

As already pointed out, that isn't the reference GW were making.

As GW use alot of latin-alike words in its fiction it makes sence to call a carnifex a carnifex. GW have used many historical names as references for their characters, i thought everyone knew that.

Sanguinius is another Primarch name taken from Latin. Sanguineus, adj. bloody, bloodthirsty. Then there are all of the characters named after people and mythological figures. Hey, names have to come from somewhere and I like the partially jocular allusive names better than random fantasy gibberish.

Nope. Carnifex is right.
It is for granting "the Emperor's peace" to fallen brethren.

Reductor is for extracting the progenoids from fallen marines.
