Since Grey Knights are due out soon I noticed that Maelstrom's current stock of 'Daemon hunters' are no longer held in stock:

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=cat&cre=min-40k-deh

However I also noticed that Witch hunters are also out of stock:

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=cat&cre=min-40k-wih#witch hunters

And also some figures are described as 'While stocks last':

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=pro&pre=gwk_40k_eld_hqt_101_000
http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=pro&pre=gwk_40k_ipg_hqt_102_000
http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=pro&pre=gwk_40k_ipg_eli_101_000

These are three examples but there are more. Does anyone know what's happening? Is the range of 'metal' blisters being reduced or are these models being re sculpted, or something else?

They don't keep them fully stocked like they do with plastic kits, and have to order them from GW directly.

That doesn't seem like the right answer to me. 'While Stocks last' seems to be reserved for stock that is not being replaced.

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=sea&cat=las

Given the size of Maelstrom I'd say that they order all their GW stock directly from GW.

Is it again time for the monthly "Can't find a Sororitas booster - will they be squatted/get a new Codex soon" thread?

I saw Vespid on their 'While stocks last', which I found very strange.

Maelstrom like most webstores doesn't have the right to sell mail order only items. And this is the current batch of products taken from the general range (as seen in brick and mortar stores) to mail order only.

That sounds more plausible. The GW stuff seems to be made up of slow burners and special characters. Is there a list of models that are only available through mail order?

There's a weird PP one on there too.

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=pro&pre=prp_wmc_ros_unt_303_000

Commander Nemo the Cygnar Charger and Cryx Deathrippers are on there because their models have been replaced. AFAIK the Mage Hunter Assassin has not been replaced (the variant sculpt 'complements' the original). Also there's no Khador Berzerker, it's not listed as 'out of stock at the supplier' it is just missing.

[edit]

The same model is also 'out of stock at the supplier'.

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=pro&pre=prp_wmc_ros_sol_151_000

8 in stock never to return or out of stock at the supplier?!?

Brick and mortar stores can get monthly price lists of what is available through the normal channels, indicating that everything else has to be ordered via mail order. Some stores (not including webstores) also have the right to sell mail order items with only a small profit margin.

GW stores also get emails of what items are discontinued from the general range, here the latest example posted by dante76 over at Warseer (13th January), including most of the mentioned products:

Just got this from GW:

9906010133001 - Terminator Librarian - 48-43 - DELETE

9906010139201 - Space Marine Scout Sergeant Telion - 48-53 - DELETE

9906991503701 - Fiend Of Slaanesh - 97-38 - DELETE

99110208048 - Ancient Scar Leader Kroq Gar - 88-10 - DELETE

99689999038 - Black Box Orcs & Goblins (Japanese) - DELETE

which as we know happens now and again. These items are currently available whilst stock lasts.

What I found of interest was The Avatar and Terminator Librarian, which hints at Eldar and a previously mentioned multi part Librarian plastic kit.

More likely they're 'delete from range' for stockists. They'll move to Direct Only.

That is what Kroothawk suggested in a previous post further up the thread.

I haven't seen that rumour before, but a plastic Librarian kit would certainly be welcome.

Plastic Avatar? Really? That would good, if they make him look good. Can't stand the metal one. Sooooo old and crusty.

Currently collecting and painting Eldar from W40k.

...
And this is the problem we have with a lot of stockists who don't explain their stock levels.

"While stock lasts" does not mean "These things are going to be made into plastic! Buy buy buy!".

It just means things are being shifted from general availability to direct only. It frees up product codes for GW stockists, and cuts down on shelf space for them.

It also has the side effect of making GW Direct the only way to buy the product, which theoretically lets them measure the demand for a particular product.

Yeah, Kroothawk pretty much said it in his post too, but I can't imagine they'll be completely removing many of these products, Direct Only sounds right.

Well, not 'right' per se, it'd be good if we could buy them in store, but more accurate.

I was told in my local GW shop that certain metal boxes are for mail order only. Even GW shops are cutting back on non-plastic stock.

I didn't catch whether that was to phase out old models (Warp Spiders had the Citadel logo on the box), or for cheaper restock shipping costs.

Hehe. Just spotted the pun on re-read Not intended.
