square for fantasy, round for 40k. if it's a showcase model i prefer round (gives a nicer presentation)

Since I collect many different model ranges, it usually depends on "which base type will it fit on" more than anything. I tend to use more square bases, though.

Honestly , I think the round bases are better for actual gameplay, maneuvering around terrain, etc, but the square bases look a bit more proffessional, and I think the whole ranking up you can do with them is keen.

Since I paint for display, I use round bases with a lip. They look better than the GW-style ones.

I play Fantasy so square for me, but I think round looks better. Plus ranking up models is a major pain in the arse.

Big old square bases! I love my Ogre-sized stuff. Looks terrific ranked up, and when seen in combat against man sized models, from the level of the average trooper, it looks so intimidating!

Do you know what I've really grown to like?

Taking a nicely textured and painted medium square base and gluing it right in the middle of a plain 60mm round base. It's like WHFB intruding unwanted into 40K.

Square bases are really nice for ranking up minis, but a round base looks a lot more "integrated" than a square one. It looks less like a bunch of guys walking around on their own portable stage and more cohesive.

The round bases are one reason I prefer 40k over fantasy. Using big square movement trays over uneven terrain just looks dumb.

I use round for everything. I just think they look better. Square is really just for function of massed groups in HWFB.

Even the unit of WHFB Chaos warriors has round bases. I dont play WHFB so its no worries.

For something that is display only I tend to use Privateer Press bases, they have a nice rounded lip that gives the mini a more display/statue look than the GW bases.

I prefer hexagonal. They have a built in LoS and facing indicator for skirmish and role-playing games.

Aesthetically, I like PP bases - round, with curved sides and a lip. I get the practical side of square or hex bases for certain games, but since I don't play them, it's round all the way, for me, unless you're popping a show piece on a display plinth or something.

I prefer round GW ones, not a fan of the lipped bases, as the lip sometimes gets in the way of toes etc.

But I tend to not mix bases if I can help it, for any of the various game systems I play.

KK beat me to it but Hex is best.

Aesthetically they just seem better, but I think it really comes from the fact that they only used to come with GW's Judge Dredd range.

Other than that it is usually dictated by the game rules.

Square bases don't tip over as easily in my experience.

But round bases fit inside my buddy's Dwarven Forge cavern and dungeon sets better than square.

Battletech uses 30mm hex bases, has since they first started with the Ral Partha minis...sometime in the 80s I think.

I like them all in their context.

Hexes are good for Battletech and similar games which need careful facing.

Round is good for skirmish games, and 40k.

Square is great for games with ranked blocks; the basing looks even nicer when it all matches up and looks like a continuous and cohesive patch of ground. I've seen people model up units so a terrain element (like a winding stream, blood splatter, fallen log, or a skeleton splayed out on the ground) crosses over several bases in a unit, and it often looks awesome.

I have several old (mid to late 80s) 40k and Warhammer figures which came on hex bases, including old metal chaos warriors, dark elves, and eldar.

I like uniformed bases. If a model only comes with a Round Base while the entire army has square ones, I'll give it a square base too. Whatever the Majority it is.

What box of WHFB chaos warriors did you pick up? I have bought a total of 5 boxes of the guys, and not once have I received round bases for them. Of course, they're so ing hard to rank up perfectly, especially if you add in a character, that I'd prefer them with round bases

Also, on topic, I prefer round bases: they seem cleaner for individual models, but a ranked up unit looks pretty nice on square bases. But perfect solution: get a movement tray that has 25mm holes in it to place in the round bases-makes everything fit nicer. Oh, wait: War of the Ring has this ! Score!!

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
