Personally I think GW should change the name from "Chaos Space Marines" to "Chaos Marines" it's shorter, easier to remember and sounds catchier.

I agree. It's also thematic, as 'Space' implies order.

Well, they're Space Marines, but now they're working for Chaos. Chaos Space Marines. I often call them Chaos Marines and find the terms to be interchangeable pretty much everywhere though.

Wouldn't "Space" imply emptiness, aeronautics, cosmology or astronomy instead of order?

I prefer Chaos Space Marines; it's what they are and it seems more suitable for an army title compared to Chaos Marines which seems a bit lazy IMHO.

Chaos Space Marines here too. Seems a bit more formal than "Chaos Marines".

I think Chaos Space marines fits better it describes them for what they are. Warriors who have turned there back on the imperium and now fight for the chaos gods.

This.

Though in DoWII Retribution, you can hear them say "Chaos Marines Closi-"

In the context, I don't think it does. Space in 40,000 isn't empty, it's full of horrible stuff trying to rape and murder humanity (in roughly that order, roughly). The tradition in the genre is that order and chaos are somehow antithetical forces. Space, having structure, implies an order antithetical to Chaos without buying into the moronic D&D-style dualism of moral alignment.

I'm happy with Chaos Space Marines- it tells it like it is: these used to be Space Marines, now they are Space Marines who follow chaos.

It would be like changing Tyranids to Nids just because it's shorter and a lot of people say it. There's no reason to do it other than laziness.

I have recently been diagnosed with swelling in the brain, so please excuse spelling mistakes and faulty sentences. I am losing my ability to type and talk effectively, but dammit, that is not going to stop me from trying.

I use the terms interchangeably. However, I recognize the army faction as "Chaos-god-aligned Space Marines" (as opposed to "Emperor-aligned aka normal Space Marines") and thus I would consider the full title of the faction to be Chaos Space Marines.

Also, I'm very used to abbreviating CSM.

I've always preferred to call them Chaos, both they and the Daemons. It's the shortest, and the most accurate. They were once Space Marines, sure, but at this point, besides some that are more correctly described as "traitor legions", groups like the World Eaters, Emperor's Children, and the Black Legion are pretty far from being Chapter Approved. Chaos fits, IMO.

Chaos Space Marines as they're ful title, with Chaos Marines as their nickname, it would be like renaming Space Marines to Marines, it just wouldn't sound right

The sink.

Chaos Marines because Chaos Space Marines has too many syllables. Though when abbreviated I use CSM instead of CM.

I'm pretty sure the Space part is just because they fly around in spaceships and beat up aliens in a sci-fi setting. You might be reading into it a bit too much. I always say Chaos Marines but that's just in conversation. I like the full title because the more modifers you add on the sillier it gets. Its makes the distinction that these aren't just marines, but marines in space! But that's not all they're also Chaos worshippers!

I think the full "Chaos Space Marines" sounds silly. It's like Rick Priestly said, "Ok Jervis, get this, they're like Space Marines, but eeeevil, so let's call 'em 'Evil Space Marines'".

I dunno, it's just too didactic. Chaos Marines tells you the history just as well as Chaos Space Marines, and it's snappier.

(side note: "Space Marines" sounds silly too, but that's kinda the point, right?)

It being silly is exactly why I like it. But it is a bit of a mouthful.

I think Chaos Space Marines works better as its name then Chaos Maines. Chaos Marines sounds more like a chapter of Space Marines rather then actuallay mean Chaos.
