Subject: Half scale WFB anyone?

Hello,
I've been working on a secret project for the last couple of years.
Playing WFB 3rd edition in half scale! Am i a mentalist or a nutjob? I hope not. We're using 10mm minis on half size bases, halving all measurements etc. I've been basing my chaps on 10mm x10mm self-adhesive magnets. So they can stick to movement trays and for easy storage. Cutting 12.5mm square magnetic bases for beastmen was a bit tedious (half 25mm). My miniatures are a mix of Pendraken, Magister Militum and Warmaster.
We've used 10mm instead of 15mm as 15mm models are too big for the downscaled bases.
Why are we doing this? Why because i want to play massive fantasy battles and campaigns without the huge investment in time and money. I've spent the last 3 years building and converting 28mm sci fi forces and none of these are finished. I want to play fantasy and I want to play now.
My friend and I have played a couple of games and it works really well! It's fast to play (much, much quicker then it's big brother). Quick to paint and terrain building is simple and rewarding! I've nearly made a whole terrain set in the last few weeks.
What’s more we can play massive games! I've enough terrain tiles to make a 6' by 2' board. That’s the equivalent of a 12' by 4' normal table. Enough room for a massive pitched battle!
We'll be playing a campaign using the original Mighty Empire rule and Siege!
I realise i can't play against the proper gw people but as i'm a bit of a hermit i don't mind. If i go to the club people will let me use their stuff. I will probably collect a 28mm historical army at some point. I'd want to finish my Eldar first!
Any thoughts peeps?
Here are some WIP photos. Please remember nothing in these photos is finished!
Test game in progress.
Early experiments with terrain.
I hope that river is impassable!

That's a great looking project. Other than trying to have both 10mm and 12.5mm bases - I don't think your a nut job at all

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Wow. Cool idea. Where do you get the minis from though? I wonder if we could do this for the other games? Especially LotRSBG, imagine how quick it'd be then.

Here's two of the sites for the miniatures he listed in the first post

Woobis,
I think it's a brilliant idea.
GW games have become so massive, with so many figures crammed onto a rediculously small playing area that downscaling is an excellent fix. There's also a few blogs around of folks doing 40k in 15mm.
If I was going to go into fantasy, I'd I prefer the detail available in 15mm, but there's great stuff avaialble in 10 as well. I use rebased mechwarrior minis (10mm) to play future war commander and it's an excellent way to field lots of vehicles, mechs and infantry for low cost and less time spent painting.
However, for truely massive battles, I'd probably switch over to warmaster as it's more suited to that kind of thing and isn't as likely to be bogged down.
Keep up the good work.

I like the idea, mostly because of the terrain to model scale. GW hills are ~should tall which is just silly.
Why 3rd edition?
Though the rules are new, using Mantic Games rule set "Kings of Battle", would work really well at 10mm or 15mm due to the morale and casualty rules.
I wouldn't want to do smaller scale miniatures unless I was doing a larger scale battle. I'd love to do 5,000 points on a 4x6 foot table, (or even 3x6 foot).
Another option would be a scale conversion to using centimeters instead of inches. 1" = 1cm.
Chariots would be 2cm x 4cm
Monsters are 2cm
Cave is: 1cm x 2cm
25mm base becomes 1cm
20mm base becomes 8mm.
Then all movement and rules you just do in centimeters.

As woobis is infrequent about checking stuff I'll answer for him.....We chose 3rd because we're old, and it was what we played when we were little, we have changed a few things like magic levels etc to fit into our prolonged mighty empires debacle.
Pendraken is an excellent source of miniatures if you want to join in our craziness. They're cheap, pretty and look good en mass. Woobis' scenery is lovely and playing a game on a beautiful board in 10mm is excellent.
I chose warmaster because the sculpts are beautiful but not all of them are easy to cut up so it involves a massive dedication to resculpt parts in tiny scale (but its sooooo worth it). We also had a supply of 10mm square magnets and are using these for our bases with tiny metal movement trays.
I'll hassle woobis tonight and get him to pay more attention to threads he started. I'll have to get him to put up some pics then I can add mine and not feel like I'm hijacking. sadly if you look at the top pics my units are the unpainted ones...on the plus side the elephant is mine and currently being resculpted into a night goblin war mammoth.

This sounds like as very interesting idea, I may have to borrow it. All I need to do is convince my gaming group that they should do this.
Not too familiar with with 3rd ed rules, but I feel inspired by the old rule set and may use 5th, as that's what I started with.

Interesting indeed! I imagine the only real downside is the smaller scale might be a bit finicky for movement and handling? An extra accidental half inch of movement meas a lot more compared to full 28mm size I imagine.
Still, pretty rad!
