In short, is it a good idea? Seems like a nasty surprise, especially given how slowly they move. But then you don't get the benefit of hiding behind the huge wall as your troops march.
Opinions?

Deep Strike them, declare warriors as coming in from the monoliths and you can leave your weak guys off of the table for a while to avoid phase out-it's brutal, and it cost me first place in a tournament when some guy did that to me. It also forces your opponent to "lose" a turn or two, because they can't shoot at you. Also makes bringing something like a C'tan a bit more viable. A bit. But not much.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Generally speaking, the monolith is so slow that against some armies you NEED to deep strike them.

On the otehrhand, if you hide all your warriors behind the monolith they have to come to you. ;-)

No no no no I cannot advise strongly enough agianst this!

When you deep strike a monolith, you can't fire any of its guns that turn.

You also run the risk of mis-haping, and if you do you may lose some reserves.

Also, if it doesn't start the table, you run the risk of suffering a bad shooting round and not having its support capeabilities to help out your necrons.

ALso, youre forgetting the primary function of the beast - ITS A MOVING WALL!!!! Use it for cover!

Except that many GW/FLGS stores interpret the RAW that you can fire the Particle Whip after deep strike and not suffer mishaps into enemy models. Just like mine does. (Don't bother arguing to me your interpretation, I've heard them all, however PM me if you feel the need to)

Honestly though it depends on what army you are facing. Armies like Tau that can take out your Monolith 1st turn are the type of armies you may want to deep strike. Against armies like Orcs and Tryanids, I would be more likely to start my Monoliths on the table.

Like any strategic decisions in this game, it depends on the situation of the game table.

When using 2 Monoliths it does often help to hold one in reserve. I like DS'ing one so that I can assault into enemy objectives with wraiths in the end turns. That ability to port units through the monolith into back lines is often overlooked by people I face.

I think the bigger thing is that against armies other than Tau or "loaded for bear" (lots of heavy AT weapons like Las Cannon) armies deep striking might lose you the game if you don't come in until very late... Played one just last week where my Deathwing were able to win more or less because the Monolith was off the table and I could deal with everything else free from the worry of dealing with that... The whole luck thing...
