Is there anything worth visiting in the area, or should I spend my free time in the hotel bar?
There are portions of San Diego that are absolutely beautiful (its a weekend romantic getaway spot for LA'rs). Just watchout when driving for the illegal aliens running across the border. I you not.

One of my only regrets from my last job is that I was insufficiently corrupt to accept a trip to San Diego paid by one of our vendors (to visit their facility), because I knew I'd feel bad if we later reduced our usage of them. Damn this conscience of mine!
It's supposedly gorgeous. Definitely go.

Tijuana. Go there. Sew your wallet to your chest. Watch out for the women who throw their babies at you only to have the 4 or so that can walk go through all of your pockets in .2 seconds flat while you catch the baby.
I think they have a zoo there too.
But now that you mention it, Hotel Bar might be the place to be.
If you're into historical stuff, the USS Midway museum is quite nice. Get a lovely view of carrier row.
The Cabrillo National Munumen/Point Loma Light house is a must see in my opinion. You get a lovely view of the whole city, and its quite a nice place to just sit down and relax.
Hope you enjoy your trip to my home state!

Easily one of the friendliest cities I've been to.
Balboa Park is worth checking out as is the zoo.
Seaworld is definetly not - total rip off.
USS Enterpirse is moored in the bay there and you can take a tour of her. Really enjoyed that.
Pacific beach is nice but the northern part of it is a bit dodgy I found.
Take a boat tour of the bay itself too, theres lots of guide boats that will take you around, very scenic.

Amazing city, and march is one of its finest months. -The Aircraft carrier (USS Midway) is AMAZING, a must for any type of war-nut, as most wargamers are... -Old Town, if you're a a history nut. It's a recreation of the first village that was San Diego. Nice little village that feels like an old west town. -Enjoy the Beach, my good man! They are very nice, especially when compared with whatever you brits have (especially ones with the Japanese flag?) -Their Zoo is phenomenal, and must be seen. Sea world is not as phenomenal, and is a big tourist trap. -If you feel like lounging on a touristy boat, take a whale-watching tour. Sit on a boat in the sea and maybe look for them big fish. Or just enjoy the break. Their weather-forcasters on the evening news have the easiest jobs in the world.
If you're looking for old-timey architecture, then check out the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park (previously mentioned, very nice with some little artsy shops, great for casually looking at art in), and the Mission San Diego de Alcala. As expected from the first spanish mission in the area, it will have some excellent colonial architecture.

Just to note, it's the USS Midway, not the USS Enterprise. The CV-6 was scrapped, and the CVN-65 is still in active service, but that's just nitpicking. It's still an awesome sight to see, and the view is great.
Seriously, when I was there there wera good 2 or 3 supercarriers tied up at the naval base across the channel...what a sight.

Oh my god Legoland. I loved that place when I was a kid, I haven't been in years, but even if they just have miniland still up and running it'd be worth a visit, even for just a little.

Ive been to San Diego a few times, its a fun town and very pretty, but all the tourist stuff kinda sucks, ignore Sea World and just go on the piss. They have a great Rock Bottom Brewery in the city centre and some good British pubs.
Stop by the new Stone brewery just North of SD though for even more merriment, the foods gak, but the beers fething sweeeeet.
Here I got you the address for your GPS.
1999 Citracado Parkway, Escondido, CA, United States
I was staying in the gas lamp quarter in the city and I got the bus there, but by the time i had drank my fill it was throwing out time, and it cost me $100 to get back in a taxi. So i recommend a night in a hotel in Escondido.
