So, my trusty pot of Brazen Brass, born in 1994, one of the old line of awesome Citadel paints, has finally surrendered after years of faithful service. My Vallejo model regualr brass, only half the age, but used just as hard, is also about to drop its last few drops.

So, I havent bought/shopped for any brass paints for about 8 years, which is working best these days for most people? Ive heard the p3 brass stuff should be avoided due to clumping, what about the rest?

If it helps I prime most everything grey, and usually base the brass areas with a medium brown.

Depends on whether you want the same colour "brass" - GW metallics have been improved since the old days but obviously the two GW Bronze/Brass colours wont match properly so you'd have to go for Vallejo, but I think I've read that they've produced new metallics that are as good quality as GWs newer pots (Vallejo Air I think).

I have only experianced the GW paint range though, and of those I find Tin Bitz too dark but Dwarf bronze is very useful, and although a little light coloured it works well with Badab Black to give a darker tone

In a world gone mad, who is left to fight for truth, justice and all that gets you smashed for under a fiver....

First played 40k during 2nd edition, missed out 3rd and 4th, and haven't played 40k since 5th edition - but still read and occasionally paint

A freaking lovely brass is boltgun or mithril with multiple layers of unwatered gryphon sienna and the odd badab black with a final gloss layer. It gives this really rich dark dirty brass that shines but has great depth. Takes forever though :(

I don't touch the GW brasses, they have lousy coverage and the actual tones just don't seem nice enough. Tin bitz mixed with basic golds can look great though.

Vmc brass is really the best though, hands down.

I mix all my "brassy" colors. I use a bit of Boltgun Metal with a touch of Brazen Brass added in, and then flavor with P3 Rhulic Gold to taste. I also make sure to thin it a bit so that it takes a few coats, but ends up looking pretty decent and not too thick.

Thats primarily what Ive been using, my only issue with it is that it dries very quickly. Even if I add some retarder & flow release it seems to gum up like 3 times faster than steel/silver colors.

Thanks for the input everyone.
