Good for a start! Some things that would make him pop more would be highlighting the armor with a lighter shade more, and then washing it with something like Badab Black, this will give it a lot more depth. Basing it also helps a lot.

And lastly, this post should be in the Painting and Modelling forums =P

I feel like the elephant in the room is the question "Why is his beard green?"

Did you do anything to the inside of the cape? If not just give in a couple of washes of badab black until your happy. I have got ulthw'e for eldar and got a farseer and did it too his cloak where i wanted it black. It looks awsum.

A very good start mate.

To everyone else, this guy is new. Saying do some highlights and washes may not be the best adivice. More detail may be required...

To have a good army, the main thing is the have it neat. Like drawing, try to stay in the lines as best as possible. You did a good job on that.

The other thing is water down the paints a little. Straight out of the bottle and the paint can be too thick. It will dry thick and pepole can notice. You might need 2 or even 3 coats for it to "pop" but its worth it.

For anything that has a lot of detail like the beard or cape, paint with a darker colour then what you planned to paint with. Once dry, go over it again with the correct colour but very lightly, only picking out the top surface. Once that done, and if you want to experiment with washes (as mentioned already) then go over it again with a wash of similar colour.

Start with these tips. Have some fun and then move on to more tips.

Wish I could have painted this well when I started

But yeah, the tips others have given here are good. Try highlighting the armour with a shade lighter where the light would hit the edges.

Also, it's cliche, but thin your paints. A couple of drops of water means the paint goes on less..."blobby".

You need to throw a wash on his armor. GW provides a set of wonderful washes that you use. His beard is very green.

All of the tips given are solid tips. Just keep doin what you're doin, and add to your skills (Highlighting, Washing)

I personally like the grey fur in the wolf pelt. I'm totally gonna give that a try on my SW pelts. Good work!

I'm not a fantastic painter so I can't give any tips like the other folks, but I think it looks really good for a first model. Much better than my first crappy ones. But one question; why the green hair? (lol)

As already mentioned by others, good first model, washes would really help to just shade a bit and pick out the recesses and of course, green hair Not that anyway ever said that a marine couldn't have green hair, maybe a more pastel tone of green would be less striking. But at least you've got people talking about it!

Need more 's in my life!

For everyone who keeps saying about the green hair.

I closed my eyes and picked a colour. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. This...erm....wasn't one of those "it works" times.lol

But it does add a sort of comidic effect.

And also thanks for all the little tips. I'm trying them all out. Especially the water down the paint. This has worked wonders for my blood claws. Thanks very much.

Yeah - good work for 1st try.

You don't need to buy the GW washes to start - in fact it would be better when starting out to learn how to create your own washes - that will allow you to create a whole range of colours.

So practicing with washes and drybrusing will give you some big advances - give it a go!

Good first model, keep it up! Put a basic black wash on top of that and it would really look badass. For a wash i just take some black paint and add a bunch of water, it's cheap and easy.
