Well which IG armyihas the best background in your opinion?

I personally recon that its the ice warriors of Valhalla as they are as courageous as a space marine and refuse to stand down no matter how big the enemy.

What do you think?

This. though i'd have to say as far as back story i'm gonna go with tanith, brains mixed with courage is the best possible combo for a guard regiment (protip: it means more survive!)

I do like most of the Imperial guard regiments, but i admit i love most Tanith and Death korps of Krieg, after those comes Cadian due to the fact they let me suuuuch a big time converting them and I really liked that. I also like Catachan as well. Armagedon steel Legion got a cool fluff as well

Can space Marines even be said to have courage though, since it is indoctrinated, cut and so on out of them?

And the Tanith probably have the most background, as they have about 12 books about them.

I'd say so, I mean look at chapters that go renengade, most of the time it becomes less about selfless sacrifice and more about survival at all costs, any animal will fight when back into a corner, but true courage comes from accepting the fear of a situation and overcoming it. an excellent example I read said basically Space Marines are boys taken at the age when they feel invincible, and then never allowed to grow older, so they never lose that feeling of Invulnerability and supreme confidence. I can vouch for this as my 12 year old brother has just entered that phase lol.

I'ma big fan of the Death Korps, their uniformity is a pretty cool thing and when coupled with the gas masks they always wear, becomes a really awesome idea.

I agree, a space marine may do things that boggle the mind but they have ungodly amounts of training and equipment so....

only a guardsmen would charge into the line with nothing but cardboard armor, a flashlight, and a set of munitorum issue steel balls

I cast my vote for the Tanith, hands down their stuff is amazing, made by one of the best if not the best 40k writer and for god's sake they have 13 books to their name, that's a lot more than more numerous regiments could say.

We talking armies you can actually collect or just in general?

Tanith have got a huge background but they no longer have rules or models. So i'm reluctant to count them, plus they were invented for fluff puposes rather than having fluff created atround them so seems a little unfair.

I like the DKoK but I think the mental attitude that their world inspires does lend itself to great fluff. Read dead man walking, its not a bad book but in order to tell a good story the author has had to do most of it from a non DKoK perspective.

I personally really like the Vostroyan background.

There's an interesting discussion about this between an Imperial Fists captain and Imperial Guard officer in the Black Library novel, Storm of Iron. The Imperial Fist captain actually says, in response to admiring comments of the officer, that the Space Marines are not courageous because they know no fear, have never known defeat, &c. and that, in turn, he sees the Imperial Guardsmen as the truly courageous ones.

I am very partial to the DKoK. I love the WWI styling, the inevitability of their self-imposed fate, the grim siege tactics, the cool masks... That said, I am working on an IG regiment of my own that is going to take some modeling work from Valhallans and DKoK. Should be fun .

Tanith still have models available. Go to GW's site and look at the IG Collector's stuff.
