Ollanius Pius - Savior of the Emperor

Well, my last piece of scenery was well-liked so I figure I'll start off strong and show this as a WIP
The basic 'idea' behind the Hydra Emplacement(specifically, it will be called "Air Defense Station Sierra 17") will be that it's a relatively old emplacement, recently reactivated and refurbished.
I'm doing this project in stages(not least of which is because I've got to go to the train shop tomorrow to get some 'special detailing' bits ), with this first WIP bringing you the actual 'emplacement' proper.
And now I present: ADS Sierra 17, still wet with the nice cream colored basecoat for the cement fixtures!
This is one detail bit I really quite like. Tucked away in a corner, there's a small shrine to the Emperor showing that this emplacement has been consecrated by the Ecclesiarchy for maximum Imperial Goodness
I'm thinking that a small table with some maps, binoculars, and a radio might not be too absurd to have sitting around inside of the emplacement, particularly near the shrine.
I'm also debating adding razorwire 'struts' going around the outside of the emplacement.
So. Comment away!

Awesome!!! Looks great.
Now I know many Dakka'ites may be a little picky and demanding... so here is mine!
If you could have a guy sitting back in the "trench" having a smoke that would be killer!
Cheers

Sierra 17 is extremely close to Sierra 117. Have you been playing a lot of Halo recently?

You're right, it's not
It's Forge World's "Hydra Emplacement" kit.

Since it's supposed to be a scenery piece that will be used for gaming and display, I'm thinking that having a character model would be a bit much.

Did some work today.
Laid the metal down, did a light wash over it then reshaded the concrete with a lighter shade of grey to give it a 'whitewashed' appearance.

You are not thinking of making the metal plates into a bronze/brass colour? Might help to break up the greys.

Heh, the metal plates actually are painted chainmail
I think that once I get them hit up with some rust/mud colored weathering powders, it'll bring out a different look.

Chainmail is just the most subtle metallic silver I have to work with and it covers quite nicely I think Automatically Appended Next Post: And another update!
That nice and flat 'olive drab' coloration is a 25/75 mixture of Vallejo's "Olive Grey" and "Tank Green". It's not been shaded yet, as it was just drying when I shot these photos, but I think it gives a good idea as to how the finished product will begin to look. I've also got to mask off the walls of the bunker and do the exposed supports in a metallic shade(I'll likely do boltgun metal from the GW range or gunmetal grey from Vallejo's), paint the shrine, shade the holes in the wall, and paint the crates and jerry cans laying on the base.
And I still have to get the proper sized brass rod to do the pinning work though, cursed train shop was closed the past few days.

There is, in fact, an in-joke there. On Halo: Reach, there is an achievement where you have to avoid a fatal fall by assassinating an Elite. Supposedly I was one of the first hundred or so people who got the achievement, and posted up a film clip of how I did it.
The "red bush" is the sweet spot, where the patrolling Elite is perfectly in range and you have a few critical seconds to correct in midair if necessary to ensure you perform the assassination.
Silver and I play together regularly, and "the red bush" has become an in-joke whenever we're playing coop games now for a near-impossible, one-in-a-million-chance-of-awesome and shenanigans.
As for the Hydra emplacement, well we had a minor setback As I was working with it, it became clear that something was...off about the emplacement's turret(not the guns, mind you. They were a breeze--was surprised that they weren't bent either!). There were a few oddly placed miscasts where the resin was not allowed to properly set it seemed, and when I contacted FW to inform them of it--they sent out a replacement turret.
So I'm waiting for that to come, and finishing up the base itself in the meantime when I don't have classwork.
Without further ado:
As you can see, I went back and redid the colors of the wall, and you cannot see it but the flooring has been redone as well. I got the chance to see some WWII coastal defense emplacements while I was on Spring Break, and it became pretty apparent that they'd paint the metalwork to ensure it wasn't reflective. Once the Hydra turret has been properly affixed and everything, I'll be cutting some brass rod and mesh netting to make the whole thing appear more 'used'. The large ammo crate is going to have some leather straps painted on, the shells within the two smaller crates will be painted, etc.
There's still a lot of work to be done on this puppy, but I cannot honestly say that I haven't enjoyed every minute of it.
As another note, I'm going to show off a few WIPs that I've been doing while listening to lectures for Law Enforcement Operations...
First pieces really being painted for my Dark Angels Successor Chapter, the "Blades of Caliban"--which Silver actually wrote up a whole fluff piece for Look for more on the Blades later though!

Right now, I'm trying to find something so that I can cut thick enough brass rod to make the guns able to traverse.
It's actually kind of difficult with the thickness I'm using, but when it gets down to it I think the effect will be a good one.
Young_Logan wrote:Looking good, what might look interesting would be a SM in with the guard crew, sort of an 'overseer'. Looking forward ti the finished product
I'm avoiding putting any crew directly within.
I might use the Lord General model from the Guard Command HQ set that FW sells(I bought one awhile back for the scanner and the adjutant), however, and use him as a fleet liasion.
