I hate when you organize a match and tell your opponent I'll be there tomorrow bring a 1k list you show up with your list and the guy brings a list built around his favorite or most badass special character. according to the special character rules unless house/friendly rules state you can field special characters you can't field them under 1500 points this drives me nuts cuz now I'm sitting here with my plain list and he's got sum super badass that kills 20man squads by him self in 1 turn taking no wounds and blah blah blah it's not fair then I ask if he can sub out the special so we can test tournament lists and rules and he turns to me and says this is my tournament list at 1k .............WHAT????? The tourney rules state no special characters and he's like I know I was gonna see how the list does and sub him out in the tourney.......omg

This is easy to fix.

You just tell the guy, "Hey man, that's against the rules."

If he says, "so what?", you don't play him.

Out of curiosity, which character is this? Most characters no longer have the "1500 or over" cap on them. Or is this a special tournament rule for your area?

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Didn't they stop the need +1500pts for SC when they drop the Armoury. Anyways if the SC dosen't say only if +1500pts, he can take him if he has the points.

In OP's post he says that in the tourney no special characters are allowed. But yes in most cases there are no restrictions on special character usage.

Not too sure what to make of it...If he's testing his list why put in something that you know you won't be able to use?

They took the blanket prohibition on SCs out of the main rulebook. I'm not sure if any of them say they need opponent's permission anymore. Maybe the ones in the DH & WH codices?

This is an easy problem to solve. TALK to your darn opponent CLEARLY before you make your lists and actually specify the restrictions you're going to share. And if he makes a strong list within the agreed restrictions, don't whine or complain. Just deal with it and make the game as fun as you can.

I hate when posters don't take the time to add proper punctuation, spelling, or capitalization in their posts.

In other news, I would like to know what character this is.

Only ones with Special Characters that have point restrictions are the ones in the DH, WH, Tau, and Black Templar Codexes now if I'm correct. Necrons only have C'tans, which doesnt need any special permission if I recall.

As for the characters, a good deal of existing characters (except Aun Va and Helbrecht. Possibly Cortez, but I'm not sure) has 1500 points as their requirement, if they have one.

Actually, the old points cap was more of a warning than a restriction.

If you're bringing a single 300 point model to a 1000 point game, odds are pretty high that you're going to get your ass beat.

In the 3rd ed days many of the SCs had specific restrictions that they could only be taken in a game of at least a certain size. Old One Eye, IIRC, could only be taken in 1500+. I think Eldrad was limited to 2000+pt games.

Old One Eye was the sole exception as he could only be taken in games of 1500 points or less, and was the only SC that was forbidden in high points games.

Well, right, and Creed could only be taken in a Cadian army.

Clearly GWs stance on special characters is different than it once was, but one thing remains true: special characters tend to be VERY expensive for what they do, and tend to horribly drag on lists at lower points.

I wouldn't have taken Creed in a 1000 point game back in the day, not because that would be overpowered, and not only because of the army and points restriction, but because I'd be shooting myself in the foot if I did.

In all honesty, you're just hurting yourself. The way the OP was written makes it seem like you're just bitter over your friend bringing a SC, and are whining here. The lack of punctuation makes it hard for us to tell.

But yeah, like the others said...if you've previously agreed 'no SC' just point it out. It's quite possible it might have slipped his mind while writing the list.

The end times are upon us! The power and chaos of the warp is growing day by day.

This post is a perfect example. It's clearly a post that was written in 2004 and was lost in the warp only to re-emerge now.

It must be have been twisted to the evil ways of Chaos and is acting as an advanced scout to judge our knowledge of special characters.

Mark my words: The forces of Chaos amass and will invade soon. We must do all in our power to stop this dark power.

If special characters make a game unbalancing for you, just don't play against a guy with them. If you knew him well enough to organise a match against him then he'd have to be a bit of a dick to not follow the house rules for the match, pft, but he could see it as you just being a misseryguts about the new (....haven't played in a while) rules. I tell my opponents straight that if their army is just too beardy that I'm not going to play them if they use that list, as my own army isn't about kicking ass and being an ass on the field, its about the enjoyments of building an army I like and giving it a personal touch; though I rarely play, thus rarely do I have this problem. If your opponent is being an ass with their army just don't play them and don't give a damn if they don't like it, as they'd surely gloat of their winnings, even if the game was clearly unbalanced or unsportmanly. =/

HA ha ha really now. If you hate special characters, play against a tau player.

As to special characters being unbalanced, my only complaint is why does a random space wolf guy have ETERNAL warrior, amoung other special characters that don't deserve it, when some of the name and chosen of the gods characters in the CSM codex don't? I call GAK

So you're not smart enough to press the shift key? You're probably plenty smart, just lazy or 13 years old. People won't take you seriously until you can learn to type.

Special Characters work both ways. Sure he can take Seth (The guy who's giving you so much trouble) but everybody else has their own as well. Tau are limited; I'll give you that, but honestly anybody with a bad temper and a heavy stick could clobber most of a Tau army in close combat. Just take him out using shooting and maneuvering. The entire mantra of 40k is "shoot the choppy guys and chop the shooty guys" - while Blood Angels aren't that shooty, they've got lots of choppy, so get broadsides, hammerheads, and plasma gun-armed crisis suits to do the heavy lifting. What Seth's doing to your Tau could be done by just about any vanilla Marine captain. I've had standard Marine tactical squads chew through entire Tau flanks before with almost no retaliation, since Tau are horrible in close combat.

In other words, don't complain about special characters, since the one being used on you is overkill. Just shoot him with everything you've got, or throw sacrificial units in his way to speedbump him.
